His Excellency

Adrian Godfrey Temesch et Martiel

 Regne Petrère 106

Following the Mayoral debate, the Office of the Grand Speaker sees fit to publish a transcript of all that was said during the debate this saint’s day to aid our citizenry in voting with knowledge. The Mayoral election will continue for three saint’s days, whereas the person with the highest votes will be elected.

Question #1: What are your thoughts on how the city of Vallagne is currently viewed? Would you like this perception to change- If so, how do you want our city to be viewed by others? What might you do to make that vision a reality, as mayor?

Gob Ztabba-Zniffa:

The city of Vallagne- capital of the Kingdom of the Commonwealth of Petra. Many people not visit us as they used to. The raids, the war, the bridges. Many not even know that Hohkmat is part of Petra! It is also the first thing people think of when they think of Petra! No more! I shall make the capital of Petra worthy once more! The Hohkmat city is known for its magic! I shall make the Vallagne, known for its (thinking??? invention???)! I promise to bring smoggers! (???)! Alchemists and (???) to the Vallagne so even (???) Are jealous!

Rigoberto de la Cruz:

A whole pack of questions here - my thoughts on how the city is viewed? From what I can tell, we are well regarded for our openness within our community. Our accepting attitude and strong relationship with the good folks of Hohkmat makes us a curiosity and a site of pilgrimage for those interested in learning. During the war, we have definitely been more guarded, closed off - as it must be for our safety. But to grow again, we must accept new pilgrims, open up again to the world. I want us to explore more deeply being a centre of education - for governance, theology, the arts, and much more. This is being explored by Prince Paul and our Chamberlain already, if I’m not mistaken. With conscious initiatives, and continued good work from our military, I believe we can maintain our safety while we do so.

Friend:

I'm talking to people, I tell them 'you can find me in Vallagne' and then they say 'What's Vallagne'. It happens every time. And every time I say 'Petra' and they say 'why didn't you just say that?'. Vallagne, Petra. They're the same to most people. No difference between walking into Petra and walking into Vallagne. I'm just being honest, that's how people think about it.  You know, I've lived in Petra since Petra was a baby nation, just a tiny little fragment of the Orenian Empire. I got to know the Duchess really well. The Duchess, I love her, she had big dreams Big dreams. She wanted to make Petra into the world capital of learning. A center of Culture. Well, you know, stuff happens. Look around! You could replace this city with New Reza based on the looks of it. We needed a tavern, we got a tavern just like all the other taverns. We needed stores, we got stores just like the other stores. We needed a cathedral, we got a cathedral just like all the other cathedrals. Then we haad someone come and rennovate it for us. Right?  Now the Duchess' vision, I love her, it's a great vision. She was a genius.  And it's not so far from coming true. Listen, all we gotta do is a little cleaning up, reorganize our priorities, y'know? Put the NGS in charge of the city and focus on what we really want.  I think we can all agree that we need to focus on what we really want.

Question #2: What are your thoughts on Vallagne's current cultural and artistic scene? What might be done to improve it?

Gob Ztabba-Zniffa:

Time and time again- The Vallagne, just like any other place, has ups and downs. The war has definitely not helped with the recent  happenings in the city. The paintings and sculptures no more made with brushes and chisels but with (???) and guts! The music no more made with lutes and flutes but with hammers in forges and screams of the (???). Once Vallagne pride, both have fallen and ruined the trade and moving of people and (??? thinkers???). Only poetry has survived, this is thanks to the good and lovable (???) Sir Lovette. One way to bring new life into the city is to have festivals! Bring more drinks and bards and mages doing magic things! I aim to bring an event or festival every year to revive the Vallagne culture.

Rigoberto de la Cruz:

Our cultural and artistic scene? I would say we are not lacking artists or writing of good standing, of culture, but their contributions are largely individual. We have no poetry societies, guilds of the quill, I do not remember the last time I saw a play - I believe we have the makings of a scene, but it simply needs to be more fully organized. Our Chamberlain has a keen eye and good taste, but she is overworked - the city should be compelled to help with these efforts of her’s. With the right venues and incentives, I think that we will quickly find our artistic scene could become a critical institution in city life - one worthy of traveling from far and wide to enjoy. Perhaps with partnerships with the NGS and the Monastery, we could find ourselves with some such institutions laying in wait.

Friend:

Who here has heard the song Great River Petra?  Anyone?  Anyone at all?  It's a song I wrote, just for Petra, in 1930. I wrote it to make sure that river down the mountain got called Petra and not whatever nonsense the Adrians were going to call it.  You humans have plenty of culture if you could only just remember it!  I have been working in the culture industry for longer than Petra has existed. I'm telling you the truth. Do you want to know when I started? Seventeen Seventy when I walked into Helena. I tell you: As we speak I am assembling my own school of bright, creative bards. And when I'm the mayor, and I beat Inny Yuln'aher in the bard battle, and the NGS takes over the city, why- you guys are going to have culture up to your ears- up to my ears.  He points to his ears that he wiggles.  You're going to have so much culture you're going to be giving away culture by the bucket. You'll be begging people to take it. Let's hear it for Petra and Petran culture! May we preserve and cherish it!

Question #3: How do you think the experiences of visitors and newcomers to Vallagne can be improved? How would you go about implementing those improvements?

Gob Ztabba-Zniffa:

The bridge must be fixed first! We have one temporary (???) but no 'wow' factor! I think festive activities will also bring more newcomers, maybe not at first but in time! And my festivals will expand and be known0 All shall know Petra and Vallagne! The (???) the Uruks and (???) type elves and (??? dwarves???) and (???) with the big thoughts and ambitions will be the future.

Rigoberto de la Cruz:

When I first arrived in town, there was a housing crisis - even Moleton quickly filled out. Despite this, there were many times in the day that overly tight gate security prevented our town from enjoying booms during good market hours. Accessibility to key, and Gob is wise to note the need to rebuild the bridges destroyed in the war. These issues have led to little opportunity for involvement or opportunity - low growth. I still believe in investing further into housing, but the Ausecan, and before it the Riverguard, has done great to ensure freedom of movement and travel without compromising security. I believe now that these visitors and newcomers could see their time in the city improved further by the efforts I detailed before - creating institutions and venues that welcome them, and encourage them to pursue their personal and intellectual growth here. With this, the experience will not just be as visitors, but hopefully, new citizens.

Friend:

We've all been there!  We travel on foot from a nearby country or from the cloud temple. We've taken a few wrong turns, we finally get to a brand-new city, walk inside. Oh wait! We can't walk inside. The gates are locked!  The gates are always locked because of this war, but in order to make newcomers feel welcome in Vallagne we need the newcomers to be in Vallagne! Am I crazy here? Once we can keep these gates open, then we can work on impressing the newcomers. I'll tell you for sure we need a lot more housing and a lot more government jobs.  When the NGS takes over the Vallagne government and the Academy is up and running and there's a Bard's College here there will be no end to the opprotunities we can create for newcomers and no end of reasons for them to visit. That's a promise.

Question #4: Is there anything else you’d like to state to the public?

Gob Ztabba-Zniffa:

Vote for lord Mayor Gob! And I shall make sewers happen! No more shall your children be in shit! I will make (???) happen! Bring more new people and cool (??? orcs???)! And I will push the Petra and Vallagne into the center point of Aevos like it is on the map! Vote for lord Mayor Gob! Or you're racist.

Rigoberto de la Cruz:

That you all even gathered here today, allowed me to speak - I am so grateful. My opponents, or rather my peers here, will make sure you are well served no matter who you choose. Though I may be wary of how industrialization may affect the city, or what it would mean for the Northern Geographic Society to be running it, these are bold changes that may very well improve life here. Whether it be as a guardsman, a taverneer, or by some great fortune, as your mayor, I will continue to serve this city.

Friend:

As Maitre of Chambery and NGS President- it has been a hard time for the little town downill from us. We've had to shutter the museum, close our businesses. Just a hard time, but I don't give up. When pirates raided Chambery earlier today I was first on the scene and I was on the front lines of the fight. I was in front of the front lines. These two gentlemen were also there heroicially defending my town from those raiders and I can't thank them enough.  The leadership that I've shown in Chambery is the same leadership you'll get in Vallagne. That's a promise.  I would like to thank those who showed up to fight for Chambery, especially my two opponents, and invite everyone here to the NGS meeting in about fifteen saints minutes. That's all.

Rigoberto de la Cruz spent the evening serving drinks at the tavern and working the gates, suggesting to patrons and passersby alike to read the transcripts and to vote for him!

Theoderic read through the transcript carefully before casting his vote. "Whoever wins has big shoes to fill."

Gob Ztabba-Zniffa wakes up in the clinic, having lost to one of the podiums in the 'blah-klomp'. His clothes vaguely smell of fish and rotten eggs and general woozieness - the aspiring 'Lord-Mayor' and 'Squirrel' takes the transcript and reads it while sipping  the poppy-milk-tea next to his stand.

"Huh! Izi a lot lezz effektive ohv ahn blah when ihn Kommon.." he squints. "Maybe mi zhould uze Kommon next tik..

After reading through the whole thing, taking in his 'blah-klomp' opponents words as well Gob nods

"Mi zhall zend zum fixez fo partz unklear!

The large-nosed and bed-ridden goblin would then begin writing to the scribes a translation! The People must know of the Walking-House fight's he promises!
