REJOICE!

 

The Altwegg Hill Cheese Chase is said to have originated in the late days of centuries old Ivöri migration. Legend holds that after a harsh winter, when food was scarce, an Ivöri princeps cast the last wheel of mountain cheese down the steep slope of one Altwegg Hill to test his men.

 

"Only the one who endures the fall and rises again is worthy," he declared. The first knight to reach the bottom, bruised but triumphant, was named the first Knight of the Wheel, inspiring a tradition that has endured for centuries.

 

The event now symbolizes the Ivöri people’s resilience and invites both natives and outsiders to test their might against GOD’s natural hills.

 

Format

 

Upon the start of the competition, a designated Cheese Master prepares the heavy cheese wheel at the top of the hill.

Participants line up behind a white chalk line, marking the starting point.

 

The Cheese Master then declares:

“ONE, TWO, THREE—CHEESE!”

 

With that, the wheel is released down the hill, and the participants hurl themselves after it—tumbling, rolling, and leaping in their pursuit. The first to capture the cheese at the bottom is declared the victor, earning the title of Knight of the Wheel until the next competition is held.
