VEILWARD: SOCIETY & LINEAGE

THE ARCANE AND ALCHEMICAL SOCIETY OF THE VEILWARD follows a unique structure based on hierarchy from accumulated knowledge, prestige, intent and power. Determining the path of a mage can be an arduous thing, a journey marked by numerous stages and stops along the way. There are numerous formal ranks amongst Magi and Alchemists alike, the most powerful of Magi incorporating these individuals together under one banner, employing them into their service as a retinue or working alongside them as peers upon projects for the betterment of Magus society as a whole, or the mundane societies that toil the farms and fields around them, unaware of the threats they are protected from, and unwittingly benefitting from the technological advancements that their neighbours bestow upon them.

Magical Lineages

Very similar to the aristocracy of the mundane realms, but equally filled with differences, mages are of different calibre to one another. There are many different kinds of Magus, from Hedge wizards to court magi - Spellblades, to charismatic leaders of Arcane ritualists.

Beyond this, however, is the lineage of those that have imparted their knowledge and style upon the mage. The ancient lineages of arcane or alchemical study, of people who have arrived to better themselves and their knowledge over centuries.

Perhaps more important than one's ability to fight or even individual intelligence is one's loyalties, conviction and lineage. Not lineage by blood, but that of tutelage. To join a powerful mage lineage is no simple thing, and a wise master will not accept just anybody into their lineage to use their name.

Upon the acceptance of a student, master or otherwise into one's mage lineage, they are to take the lineage name as their second/middle name, a sign of respect and of remembrance. Alongside potential political benefits that may come with the acceptance of a lineage, or indeed enemies. Burdens and responsibilities are also that which spring forth, along with ancient knowledge passed down. Hidden sect secrets that can only remain within one's lineage. Grand spellforges, recipes and hidden knowledge. The acceptance of an individual into one's lineage must be reported by a Master of the lineage to the council of Masters, such that it can be recorded properly.

Those of a particular lineage are equivalent to that of low nobility within the Arcane society. Those who make known their lineage and use it to their advantage may reap the benefits of such. Whether that be through land acquisition, the ability to obtain greater knowledge, perks or assets.

Lineages themselves are not made equal. Beyond having different focuses and specialties, there are ranks to one's lineage. Decided upon by the Sages as opposed to the council of Masters. Due to the potentially political nature of this, the decision to elevate or lower the status of a Lineage can be vetoed by either the council of Masters, or the Custodians.

I. Rimelance

Founded by Sereven Aihura, the Rimelance lineage is one predominantly focused upon a specific part of Water Evocation - that of the conjuring of ice. Beyond this, those who carry its name are known often for one or both of the following: An exacting mastery over Water Evocation, and a cool, practical disposition, thriving under pressure and letting it forge them into something more, borrowing some from the mutable nature of water.

Those of Rimelance wield their glacial magics with ruthless precision, augmenting such with Alchemical equipment - oft built in a sleek, militaristic design - with the most valued of the lineage laying claim to a Magnum Opus of fragmented, lacerating ice, or a symmetrical lance made from icy Arcanium, one which blesses even the uninitiated Hydromancer with a potent ice-lashing spell.

Current Head/Rep: Sage Sereven Aihura & Enoch

Current Members: Jackdaw, Elijah Nastoria, Zilvira Nightblood

II. Aurelune

Founded in the days of Atlas and Arcas, The Aurelune lineage is one predominantly focused upon the usage of Fire Evocation, with its members also known for their mastery and knowledge in Transfiguration and Translocation.

Beyond this, those who carry the Aurelune name in the modern times were once shaped under the tutorship of Teclis and Kailu Kaeronin, with the aid of the arcane strategist Nepir Rosalis, whose influence defined much of the lineage’s lasting doctrine.

Current Head: (Nepir Rosalis)
Current Representative: Ilith Kaeronin
Current Members: N/A

III. Phenakizo

The Phenakizo were founded in the Azuras by Aganar. The lineage is primarily focused on their mastery over illusion, often making it a point to treat it as a performance. Each spell is treated as a work of art, honed to perfection, a paragon of creativity. They use their imagination to enhance the world around them as they see fit, and are no strangers to showing off their own unique flourishes. The Phenakizo are tricky agents of chaos, seeking to dazzle and outwit their peers.

They are often recognised by their strange and obscure methods of casting, valuing showmanship and artistry above all else.

IV. Kamo

There is little to no information about this very new lineage.

Current Head: Kim Dok-Seo
Current Representative: Kim Dok-Seo
Current Members: Jaza'aa Al-Rashid, Aech Frostbeard

V. Riverbend

Founded officially in Azuras by Saneral, this lineage focuses upon the fluidic elements of Water Evocation and indoctrinates them into a philosophy rather than a simple Arcane practice. Utilising dazzling displays of torrents and streams, the Riverbend lineage earns its name from utilising Water Evocation as a means to control one’s own course of life as well as holding an influence on others: One cannot change the course of their destiny, but through dedication may they learn to sail across it.

Water Evokers within the Riverbend lineage are tactful tacticians who typically flicker between two polar archetypes: Pacifists and healers who utilise their art to numb wounds and shield the vulnerable, and vengeful sorcerers who control the torrents to annihilate those who threaten their existence.

Current Head: Saneral
Current Representative: Saneral
Current Members: Thalis, Ashe, Hamuunyr, Tinuviel, Avello, Ula, Iris

VI. House Orodruin

Forged in the dust from humble beginnings, the Eldritch House of Orodruin (O-rod-rin) stands as proof that all may prosper in time with faith in their will and temper. Standing steadfast against the annals of time, creation is unmarred in the face of adversity, overcoming insurmountable odds to enrich the lives of those around them. Woe be the visionless, for our gaze stretches millenia, ever vigilant to aid the Descendants against the coming darkness. House Orodruin is overseen and mentored by its Guardian Kalgrimmor, who stokes the flame of the worthy regardless of their blood or birthright, weaving reality to protect and serve, recruiting the worthy to join his plight.

Officially originating as a House during the foundings of Hohkmat, those of Orodruin exist to propel the descendants into greatness and usher them from darkness.

MANY UNMEASURABLE QUALITIES MAKE UP ONE'S POWERBASE, from one's knowledge across a broad span of subjects, to one's focus upon a specialization. Their time spent researching and writing out thesis after thesis, to their time spent honing their skills for battle. One's position in Arcane and Alchemical society is often based on many factors, their status determined primarily by how much they know and have accomplished, paired with how much they contribute in the present day. Afterall, a stagnant mage that does little anymore, is not as valuable as one that frequently weaves the narrative forwards, telling the tale of their existence or helping others in their own stories.

Mundane || 'Sanfi'

A MUNDANE is that which has no magic or alchemical knowledge to speak of. They are to be treated kindly, for most if not all were once such, but not all escape the bounds of mundanity. Farmers, clerks, guards. There can be exceptional mundanes, but they are the exception, not the rule. A magus and alchemist would however be wise to remember that in large numbers and armour, even mundanes can inflict terrible devastation upon them.|| A SANFI, is a term taken from the long deceased kingdom of Hohkmat, one of the few to survive. Sanfi consist of contracted personnel who work for a mage and have no intent on ever becoming one. From caravan guard mercenaries, merchants to smugglers. Mercenaries especially are fairly valued, for mundanes, protecting mages during periods of magical exhaustion or during complicated rituals. Whilst at the lowest rank, if they are beholden to a Magus or Alchemist of significantly higher rank in society, they draw authority from that position, placing the mundane's authority over higher ranked members than themselves.

Novice || Exotic's

  • 1-3 Disciplines in practice [T1+]
  • [Or] Studying Basic Alchemy

A NOVICE is that which has only just begun learning the Arcane, Alchemy or another mana based study such as housemagic. This is the lowest rung of society, but still leagues above that of a mundane.|| AN EXOTIC is any number of exotic creature, generally within the retinue of a magus. Whether that is a rare Yisar, a living doll, a Jing Bonded creature, construct or automaton. Their general status is recognized and protected in the court of law. Though, their status within society will likely never rise higher than this point.

Intermediate || Familiar's

  • At least 1 Discipline at expert-master level [T4+]
  • [Or] Studying Intermediate Alchemy

AN INTERMEDIATE is that which has studied the Arcane or Alchemy as a whole for several years. They are what most would consider to be a mage in their base form. Still very much learning and with room to grow, they are decidedly higher in status than that of a novice if only for the simple fact that they have dedicated more of their time to learning, and have proven themselves to some degree.|| A FAMILIAR is any non-descendant creature born largely of Mana, Arcane based creation or Alchemical creation that has become bound to another Mage or Alchemist who is partially responsible for them. Their status is immediately equivalent to an Intermediate, providing them all the privileges this entails.

Adept

  • Selected a Voidal Feat [Eminence, Voidstalking, Artificery, Scion]
  • [Or] Studying Advanced Alchemy

AN ADEPT is one who has specialized, having mastered or begun to master at least three arcane pursuits, and or has begun to learn advanced Alchemy.

Expert

  • Mastered at least 3 Disciplines [T5]
  • [Or] Mastered Advanced Alchemy and multiple rare recipes.

AN EXPERT is often a master of their craft, whether that be arcane or alchemical in nature. They are typically considered to be a Master in all but name. The only way for them to progress higher than as they are now, is to be elected a Master by the Council of Masters who assess Experts on their various feats and knowledgeable pursuits.

Master (Arcane) & Maester (Alchemy)

  • Mastered at least 5 Disciplines [T5, 5 slots filled Voidal]
  • [Or] Mastered Alchemy and at least one alchemical specialization.
  • To be considered a master, one must be appointed the title on reaching a consensus from the Council of Masters. A council composed of Masters, Maesters, Sages and Archmagus of the Arcane. A member of the Mage or Alchemists lineage must vouch for the appointing of the mage or alchemist in question. If the individual is not a member of a lineage, then it is impossible to become a Master or Maester unless everyone on the council unanimously agrees that the hedge mage or hedge alchemist be appointed the honour.
  • Special exceptions can be made as a result of exceptional contributions, research, successful projects and more.

A MASTER OR MAESTER, when elected to become one, is appointed to the Council of Masters, whereupon they oversee the transition of future Masters from the Expert status below, judging them of their values, knowledge, power and contributions.

Additional Ranks/Titles

Hedge Mage

A mage without a lineage. Usually poorly funded or with holes in their knowledge. It is rare for a Hedge Mage to be on the same level as their peers, and they are often looked down upon. That is to say, that a Hedge Mage Expert, would be seen as far lower in capabilities or status than an Expert who is part of a Lineage.

Hedge Alchemist

An alchemist without a lineage. Usually poorly funded or with holes in their knowledge. It is rare for a Hedge Alchemist to be on the same level as their peers, and they are often looked down upon. That is to say that a Hedge Alchemist Expert would be seen as far lower in capabilities or status than an Expert who is part of a Lineage.

Sage

Contributed something new to magic in the form of an artifact/spellforge, or invented a new discipline or creation. Equally, one can become a Sage simply by declaring their intentions and not being challenged by the Council of Masters, provided that they also detail what it is that they are Sage of and have a solid reasoning for why they are at the pinnacle of what it is that they study.

Archmage (Arcane)  / Archemist (Alchemy)

An Archmage/Archemist is one that has been a Master/Maester for a very long time. They have been widely recognized by a large portion of society and are considered to be competent in what they do. To become one is an enigmatic thing, one either is or isn't, and much of it depends on how they are viewed by their peers. There are no strict requirements, other than to become a Master. And whilst one may call themselves an Archmage out of ego, what truly matters is if others see them as such.

Praetor

Misc. titles - Mostly for competition. The Praetor of Battle, say, would be changed if they are bested in a duel, and the Praetor of Architecture may lose their title if another out-builds them. Awarding such titles is up to the Council of Masters.

[!] Within the grounds of the Veilward, those studious enough to seek it amongst the many bookshelves would find further documentation of the Riverbend Lineage

The Riverbend Lineage

image.thumb.png.5ded78c6b363dfb904aa4e64a13db430.png

“Fate is not something one can dictate the course of. Learn to not drown down its current and set sail above it.”

Officially established in the lands of Azuras (est. 270SA) by Saneral, The Riverbend Lineage centres its practice around the Arcane practice of Water Evocation, and personal philosophies of controlling one’s free will and exerting such onto others.

Principles

Force of Personality

Core to the lineage, one’s force of personality is believed to be a critical factor in any success or failure within an individual’s life. That is to say, an individual who involves themselves more, creates the largest webs of networks and seeks the most information will find themselves rewarded well within the world. Those who sit silently in the shadow and ignore community and learning will wither and leave the world as obscure as they entered.

Fluidity of Function

Those of the Riverbend lineage hold the art of Water Evocation as one of the most diverse practices an individual can learn, and within that learning is a deeper meaning towards oneself and what role they can exert on the world around them. It also teaches oneself to seek outside of basic principles and strive to find use in all things.

Diversity of Will

In the same vein as the Fluidity of Function, it is archetypal for those of the Riverbend lineage to express varying beliefs and views and take up many different roles within the world around them: It is not a lineage or purely healers, neither it of just warmages: Some are dazzling mages who fight back against their opponents with surging tides, and others are quiet healers who tend to their community.

Mastery within the Storm

One principle that rings true to every individual within the Riverbend lineage is the capacity to survive the Tempest. Mages of this lineage are thrown into the deepest ends and the most viscous of rapids and told to rise above it or crumble: a test seen as far back as Axios, before the lineage was officially established.

“Seize the storm you fool, this is not your end;

It is your final test.”

A Written letter to each descendent of the Lineage head, Saneral: those known to be alive at least.

Spoiler

To whomever this may concern, your blood although is not my blood, is tinted within my lineage. Be it once a pupil within my own tutelage or perhaps a pupil’s pupil it matters not. Know that your calling is here: I would invite you to officiate yourself within the lineage given the chance; it is a title, and a thing of proving. Discuss with me the ancestry of your education, and we may see if that link is strong.
