Like this is nowhere the same color.

The threshold is a bit strict to prevent some weird colors. As for the saturation it's because RGB has no concept of brightness as a separate value. To make a color brighter in RGB, you have to push the components up somehow, and blending toward gray/white causes the desaturation as a side effect.

Do you have some parameters so that there is a known range to work with?
It's very difficult to understand why some colors = okay vs not okay.
