Cuukees And Cubbies

Jutra carefully added the coco powder she had just finished making into her cookie dough. She mixed and mixed while she hummed a cheery little song Auntie Dora always sung when making goodies.

She’d been in the best of moods ever since the cubbies had asked her to tell them a story. She regretted that she couldn’t think up a better story for them, but it was spur of the moment and trying to think up an orc appropriate ending to the story proved rather hard for her. She would have to set some time aside today to think up better ones for the next time they wanted a story.

The batter mixed she set about scooping small handfuls of it, rolling it around between her hands, forming little balls to put into the flat metal sheets she used for baking.

She smiled as she remembered watching their faces as they munched on their cookies while she told her tale. She sighed deeply – reading to them has stirred a deep longing in her for children – Children she would never had due to being so small and unworthy of having a mate – no one would want a weak tiny orc for a mate. Life was cruel sometimes she thought sadly. Sure she got her wish to be a real feorc but judging from how big and how many cubbies a typical feorc had; she knew it was a death sentence to try. With the back of her flour covered hand she quickly wiped away a tear. “No sense crying over it – it isn’t going to happen so be thankful for what you got." She looked around at her brand new Cookrie, a huge sandstone hearth in the centre of the room with ovens up both sides of it. An ice chest, a pantry even a cuukie jar filled to the brim for when the cubbies came calling. She chied herself for being so ungrateful.

The farm outside her home was almost as big as the town square of Dunwood – boy, her family would be so envious if they saw it. Another tear escaped down her cheek. Her family was very likely all passed away by now. Pok claimed to have killed all the Halflings in Dunwood just prior to the Aegis exodus. If they survived Pok, she knew they wouldn’t have survived the journey to the Cloud Temple while the undead attacked. It would have been impossible for them to have made it through all that. Another tear and a small sniffle, she put the last ball of dough on the sheet and carefully put it into the hot oven to bake.

Losing her Da had put a stop to her letter’s home to him. She felt so empty inside those last weeks in Aegis and first ones in Asulon.

Someone must have been looking out for her because she was giving the job of feeding the orcs once they found a ruined city to claim. This proved just the cure she needed for the emptiness that was haunting her. “Nothing cheers a soul up as being needed.” Wasn’t that Uncle Tuck’s old saying? And needed she was and it did do her soul good. She was up early every passing getting the wheat and melons from the fields, orcs both known and unknown to her, stopping by asking for food and if she could cook up the meat they had hunted. Needed and being appreciated put the spring back into her step and a smile on her tiny face.

She started putting the baking ingredients away. Cleaning up the counter tops and then washing out the bowls and utensils. She kept an eye on the cookies, making sure they didn’t burn, humming as she worked. She finally brought out the baked cookies from the oven. Testing to make sure they were done. Satisfied, she left them to cool while she started contemplating her next tale for the cubbies.
