Athirius hears the story's of Barry's death and travels to the lake where he took his life. There he pays his respect to the man he never really got to know well enough to consider a friend.

A note rests on the side of the lake it reads

I write this note for those who will see me fall or who will hear of my death i wish not to burden you by mourning me soon you will understand why i did this i will miss you all i hope you can live on and remember me for who i was and not for what i am about to do.

Athirius finishes paying his respects to Barry and is about to turn around and head back to Retanus when something catches his eye. He walks back over to the lakeside to find a damp piece of parchment with Barry's last note written on it. He picks up the damp note and can just make out the writing.

Athirius finishes reading the note and ponders for a moment about what Barry meant by "soon you will understand why i did this". Athirius cant figure out what it means so he pockets the note and heads back to Retanus in hope that he'll soon know.

Athirius takes the note back to his tower in Axforth valley with him, but he still dosent understand what on earth would have driven Barry to take his own life. Athirius stands leaning over the bench in his study, reading one line over and over again, "soon you will understand why i did this". Since it had been weeks since he had first read the note, Athirius begins to wonder if he will ever understand. Just as he is about to put Barry's note into storage, he remembers meeting Barry's son in the verge and thinks that maybe he will know something of why a strong hearted man like Barry would take his own life. He also notices that Barry used extremely bad grammar in his note, as if he was under a great deal of stress or in a hurry when he wrote it. Athirius writes a letter to Barry's son and ties it to an owls leg before setting it off into the night.
