I may have my stupid cap here but maybe you are misunderstanding what they want from you, or you aren't thinking out the box enough...

For instance this first question is not really about location but about what you are observing, and basically how I see it, it's a veiled attempt to see if you are intelligent enough to assess risk, as well as whether villain wise you have very few moral boundaries...

The man is middle aged and has a scabbard so he is obviously armed, the woman it’s already stated is young, yet she walks with a staff. Now anyway you cut it a staff is a huge lump of wood and there has to be a reason you are carrying it. Either it’s a weapon, which case you now have two against one armed individuals OR it’s a magic staff, and they have skills that you can’t accurately assess.

The child is there to see if you attack the child in a blood thirsty manner. Most die hard criminals have a cut off, and children and women come to think of it, are at the top. It takes someone with psychotic tendencies and devoid of morals to attack a child.

You could also go for the very imaginative, and quite humorous solution. And climb a tree above the nice family passing, use your fishing rod, and steal the child's cookie. Definitely a villainous act. However shows that you not only have a evil streak, but that you are morally sound as well as quite funny.
