  1. 1. Do you want the Dynmap labelled?

    • No, I don't. Don't label anything.

    • No, I don't. Only label important things like the Capitals and Cloud Temple

    • Maybe. Let players label their own things!

What we need is something like fog of war personal mapping systems. You only see the parts of the map your personally go to or have some originality to the feature and make it so players can sell maps that uncover your fog of war.

Goes in 3.0

Maybe a mapping thread where people can just give the cords of a place and it's name to be located? This prevents metagaming as the owner can just keep it secret by not listing it.

While many will say that labeling the map may encourage metagaming, I support it full-fledged. It will allow us to demonstrate the vast reaches of Asulon to the new community and also give us an idea of Asulon's size and where a specific settlement or structure is located for OOC purposes.

Last time the complaint of metagaming was brought up, I emoted putting a map up at the cloud temple. So now as long as the monks update it, its no longer meta gaming :P And I think Freya is effectively asking if the Monks should update it.

But I think only major points should be labeled. Large cities, Capitals, and important lore related landmarks. Just for the sake of not having so much to do.

Labeling some baron's house isn't needed for example.

Server announcements are supposed to be serious. This is why parents hate us.

I think only cities, towns and major landmarks should be labled.

labeling all the things sort of promotes metagaming though... That's my one problem with it.

If people want to metagame, they'll find any way to do it. I don't think having a map will increase metagaming, really.

I would like to see all chartered villages, towns, cities etc... labeled but not individual buildings (such as smithies, barracks, warehouses etc).

I think using different images for the different size settlements would be useful too.

We CAN actually add new icons to the Dynmap. I've been using the stock Dynmap ones, but i'll ask Vaq about adding new custom ones if we go ahead with this.

The way I see it, the dynamap acts as a world map. It would be silly RPly to not have a labeled world map.

Id be fine with labeling the map, It was not uncommon for outdated maps to float around olden times. As such if it takes a while to update the map that would be similar to owning an old copy. Perhaps to save yourself such a large burden only update it at certain intervals, such as every 10 years ingame. That would add several interesting elements, new players who aren't familiar might travel to a location only to find it destroyed, or taken by another faction where they will have to RP and reveal what has transpired, veteran players will know the history and likely know of the map changes without an update anyway. Some of the best RP can be started with a little misinformation.

^ Interesting thought as well.

Perhaps just name towns and specific landmarks within a 4000 radius of the Cloud Temple, and only decent towns and cities, Villages wont be marked.

I'm for labeling the map, but not labeling every single person's home or every single building as that is a ludicrous amount of detail and work, if that's what was intended then yes you'd need a map team, but that's not the case. As with any map you would have Roads, Settlements, Cities, Nations, and Extremely important or well-used places like the Cloud Temple Docks or the Library in Arethor. Billy's shack does not belong on a map and it likely doesn't belong on the server that dingy little dirt hut... I think I'm getting off topic obsessing over this non-existent subject for my joke but that's life. I feel it'd be relevent to update the map -once- a month, as that's how long it'd take a map to be made in any sort of detail.

As well I'd ask to have the 'detail' of the map changed to Biome rather than overhead, as this adds to the immersion and keeps people from combing the map looking for that heretical church to the fates or Iblees or something nasty like that to go and conquer in the name of The Holy Oren Empire. That way it looks painterly, only offers information we want to be used and makes the Dynamap a tool of our Roleplay instead of a risk of Metagaming.

Metagaming happens whether we like it or not, taking the Dynamap just hurts everyone and doesn't stop Metagaming from happening. But, metagaming to extent -is- acceptable, if its in the sake of creating roleplay like 'Hey I'd like to come trade with/live in/stop by your town' it should be acceptable and encouraged. But Metagaming for the means of dominance or powergaming is what should be looked at in scorn and revulsion. It should also be understood that some information -would- be available if one just asked such as, 'Which way is Arethor from Cloud Temple?', of course this can be done in roleplay but if there is no one -literally no one- to roleplay with to get this information, denying someone that is simply antagonizing to the whole reason we're on this server.

So yes, I believe the Dynamap should be labelled as it will help create roleplay, and I would be happy to create icons for you Freya, I have a very indepth hand with Pixel art *points at her avatar*.
