T'e Study ov Engravin' 'nd Carvin' ov Runes

By Omithiel Foreman ov Gatherin'

In my early study of runes I had little understanding at first, for at this time I just began to have access to such books within the kingdom. Thankfully for this position by King Charles long ago, I was able to study such things for they fascinated me with its’ patterns and beauty. I had to understand them so I can continue my passion for building. Now runes what are they exactly? Well runes are symbols as simple as that just symbols. Though runes have many many symbols of which its’ complexity is stupendous, for some symbols are used very often and have small variations to them. While their are runes of which I have yet to understand. Aye than to the point! Runes symbolize the following Storytelling which is common among the walls of Kal’Urguan and books within the city. Emotion, trait, person, creature, the gods, names, thing, and of course art. Quite alot well luckily this is a short description of what runes are. now I will begin with each style.

Storytelling

In my earliest study of these runes their were two runes that caught my eye, at first it was hard to understand for I was confused wondering why these two runes were at the ends of all these complex runes. But of course it was simple enough thankfully with the story of Urguan and some other myths, I was able to understand that these were simply to signify a beginning point and an end. The symbol to the left is the beginning while its right was the end. Now storytelling I couldn’t understand until I found books of which helped me interpret simple runes and translated into the common tongue. Once I figured this I was able to understand the stories but what I seen was very strange for the runes had different styles. This was the point where I figured their is something more to it.

The gods & names

Runes representing the gods was quite easy to catch, for almost everywhere in the city and I was told what the symbols were pertaining, which were the gods. While I was able to recognize this I found something strange. The symbols which represented the gods had other symbols surrounding them or even connected to them. Now I wondered did the dwarves believe in other gods? So I continued to study walls and books and found something that gave me the answer. In carvings along the walls of Kal’Urguan I found small symbols along storytelling runes, and these small symbols were symbols of the gods with more carvings beside them. I noticed that this was common amongst paintings made by other races and of course dwarves carving out their art on stone slabs. I realized that this was the name of the engraver who carved these stories. So I understood with this that names would have the symbol of which of the gods they represent the most in themselves. Though with this it didn’t help me understand these strange styles in these stories I have seen in these runes.

Emotions & Traits

Emotions are the most complicated thing to find in runes, for the fact is that at first you suspect that these runes are the engraver’s or writer’s mistake in creating these runes; or suspect that these runes are a different set of runes all together. The different styles that I would see in the walls of Kal’Urguan was confusing I didn’t understand it one bit until by chance of luck I figured why these engraver’s and writer’s made these different styles. Again I looked back at Urguan’s story for it was most familiar and its story is well understood. At the beginning of Urguan’s tale the style of the runes were curved, smooth, and almost well rounded. It was beautiful to see the craftsmanship in the beginning but as the story reached to the point of his wars and his curse. The runes looked sharp and jagged. That is when it hit me I suspected that the reason why it was like this is that the engraver or writer felt the pain of the story. As the story reaches to its end point, it becomes curved and beautiful again. Though I was not sure until I made a final conclusion with the study of when engraver’s and writer’s would create runes to describe people of close importance. When the engraver’s carved out runes of past kings you can see them being described of noble traits. Though in a few they also described them with not so bad traits but neutral traits, such as stubbornness and short tempered. While other kings were described with horrible traits these runes were sharp and jagged. One of those kings was perhaps the cause the declining of almost all clans. Once I understood runes up to this point I was finally able to start carving and writing out my own tales.

Grammar

The grammar in the runes is pretty simple well if guided. When reading runes you read from right to left and when reading names and description of this person you read from up and down. In some cases when crafting weapons and armor you will get a mix of whether to read from left to right or up and down.

Art

These runes could not be read they were simply carvings and art forms, I actually had done this quite a bit in Alras, and of course a jewel I have which I still am carving at the moment. Basically these runes are to be simply artistic, which you would see in swords and armor. The craftsmanship is phenomenal.

I hope this short summary will give you a basic into understanding runes, as for me it took me not so many...decades.... I still yet to learn some other things I wouldn’t call myself an expert at this point but I get it.

This book has been created during the time of King Algrim Irongut.

(( Please enjoy reading it, and mind my grammar I'm not the\at bad but I'm also not great.)) (( This is a rough draft my reading on runes. Enjoy it I'm not the greatest for writing things but I try, enjoy peace for now. Any suggestion would be great.)) (( will post up pictures soon.))
