Halflings in 3.0

What with the splendid new map up and coming and preparation for the Halfling area in development, I would like to take the time to ask current Halflings and Halfling associates what they would like to see in the Halfling area in the new map.

Please keep suggestions fun, interesting, different, do-able and basically non-stupid.

Things to consider:



  • Revolutions in architecture? Not seen throughout the whole village, but in one or two key buildings such as the Inn.
  • Vegetation, trees, mushrooms, whatever you want, create some quirky ideas to incorporate these boring pieces of foliage.
  • General town layout and themes. More spread out? More compressed? Perhaps striking a balance between the relative space of Dunwood and the concentration of Branborough.
  • Town names. We need a town name, Petyr is usually good at stuff like that.
  • New key buildings to be made?
  • Fun dungeons and quests are a must. Places like in Faldo's Fantastic Treasure Hunt would be good, although 10x better.

Please come up with more ideas.

Well I'm no halfling, but when I was at the Vale, I sort've thought they were too compressed. Perhaps space out a bit? Not a ton, but maybe a central, winding path sort've thing, a few bridges, have the houses on either sides. *shrug*

I agree. I think there should also be less crammed-in burrows, so we can afford some more luxury and customisation and freedom, which is something we pride ourselves on in the Vale. I would like to see more of a shire aspect too, with the paths winding up hills and small front gardens.

And you don't need to be a Halfling to contribute, it's often better to get suggestions and criticism from people that visit.

Yes, I completely agree with bigger towns. I love how much vegetation there is in Branborough, but maybe we should cool it a little bit with the humongous wheat farms like there are currently. I'd also love to see another big river flowing through, I thought that made the Vale very unique.

Yeah. When I was visiting, I saw tons and tons of random vegetation just crammed together. I personally would like to see more designated gardens and etc. Have lawns, maybe? Even in the Shire, the homes have little gardens with gates around them and a nice little gate opening.

Yeah I say make the halfling town bigger, more compressed means it's easiar for orcs to find and eat the halflings.

Even though I am against halflings even living, for a town name I would suggest Boffinton. It just sounds so halflingy. If anything name it Tineztown. :P

I'd like to see more cobblestone used for walls or borders instead of fences for wheat fields :)

Remember, by the time 3.0 is out, the "wall" blocks will be out in Minecraft update 1.4. Tiny cobble and wood walls are going to make for great detail in yards and stuff.

Maybe not necessarily a building to look at, but I think it would be interesting to see a holiday celebrated by halflings, and somehow delicate it to nature. No idea how it would pan out, but I like the idea.

On the idea of buildings, however, if there are only going to be 10-20 spread them out quite well. If there's going to be well over 35+, you may want to cluster together two or three houses.

On the idea of buildings, however, if there are only going to be 10-20 spread them out quite well. If there's going to be well over 35+, you may want to cluster together two or three houses.

Yeah I plan to put more emphasis on fun holiday event sort of things which will often correspond to our real life festivals, such as harvest, Halloween and Christmas. Of course we could make our own holiday but why when you can easily base it off of real life ones and make them more fun. Branfest is sort of a holiday too.

Since quite little of Halfling RP is conducted within burrows, I don't think the spacing between burrows will be detriment to how much RP you see, as we seem to always have a central part of town to see people.

That's what I've always loved about the smaller human settlements. Their homes can be spaced apart for private roleplaying sessions and for the populace to enjoy themselves there is always a corner to hang out in. Definitely count me in as a halfling if it sounds as good as I figure it will be.

Well preferably the town name should have some reference to a past or present Halfling person or family, for example how Branborough is named so after the Brandybucks, although this time around maybe we can make a name more relevant to our nature and landscape. We need to brainstorm I think.

I want to see a more spread out, Shire-like area. Basically, I want to live in the Shire... with flower beds, fields of wheat, and many rolling hills, as well as (maybe) a single very large hill where several holes are dug (Think Bag-end, here).
