Mining and Excavation: Keeping things logical.

Hello! In this guide, I’ll be showing and explaining a few things about mining in the world of LoTC. Each of the following posts will cover a different topic.

Post 1: What is strip mining?
Post 2: Supporting mineshafts'
Post 3: Excavation.

Post 4: On the topic of x-ray hacks.

Post 5: What do you do if you come across x-raying or landscarring?

In a few posts, you'll come across spoilers. Inside these spoilers, there will be a large amount of screenshots showing off more examples on whatever that posts' topic is. Just a warning to those with slower internet.

What is strip mining?

Strip mining is a method of mining that allows the player to quickly and efficiently gather ore. While it is easy, fast, and efficient, it is also against the rules. It is generally lumped in with the 'Land Scarring' rule because it detracts from the beauty of the map.

Generally, a strip mine starts with a very narrow tunnel. The tunnel is usually 2 blocks high and runs 10-30 blocks long. From this 'main" tunnel, other tunnels branch off. Every other block marks the spot of a new tunnel.

It's easy to avoid strip mining. Never make 2x1 tunnels. Instead, make 3x3 or 2x2 tunnels and support them.

Supporting mineshafts.

Because we strive for a nice blend of fantasy and realism on LoTC, mineshafts need to be supported. Were this real life, a long, unsupported tunnel would collapse. While they might not collapse in LoTC, they are still dangerous in that they will often result in a temporary ban.

This is what a proper mineshaft should look like A 3x3 tunnel allows you to use supports and still be able to walk down the center. A 2x2 tunnel will force you against one side to pass by.

Use your brain when supporting your mineshaft. A support every 4-12 blocks should suffice. Supports can be made from a myriad of materials, even the very stone you just dug out.

 Excavation.

Just like with strip mining, large scale excavation projects often end up with a user getting themselves banned. These bans are avoidable as long as the player takes their time to 'mark' the are as a roleplayed location and not a random landscar.

In need of sand? Make the area look like a quarry. Put up a couple signs or maybe a small camp nearby to indicate that the area is visited/used.

Or do you just happen to need some dirt? The same thing applies. Put up a fence around the hole. Mark it with signs and build a camp nearby.

Coming across things like these do not break immersion nearly as bad as random holes in the desert/plains do.

On the topic of x-ray hacks.

This is my personal appeal to you: Please don't hack. It's not worth it. You will be caught and banned. And trust me, appealing for an x-ray ban is nearly impossible. If you like the server and the community, don't ruin it for yourself and others by hacking. You will get caught, you will be banned.

If you have been x-ray hacking, then I suggest contacting a GM. I can't guarentee that you won't be banned, but it's 100% better than having a GM come across your x-ray trail/invis watching you while you do it.

I've come across a landscar/stripmine. What do I do?

Put in a /modreq. Explain what you found. You may have to pause roleplay to chat with whichever GM takes your request. Alternatively, you can send a private message to a GM on the forums with screenshots and coordinates.

I've been doing it like this for so long that whenever I go on other servers or am in solo, I start doing support beams and all that...
