History

Athirius Owl II was born the son of Athirius Owl I, an accomplished knight of Oren who was the latest addition to the long line of House Owl Knights. Athirius I was the Lord Commander and founder of the Imperial Oren Dragon Guard, an order of Orenian Knights who’s purpose was to protect the Emperor in both body and figure, meaning they doubled as bodyguards and a hit-squad for the emperor. When Athirius II was eight, he was waving his father off to work one morning through the window of the Owl Manor when an angry dwarf appeared out of nowhere and murdered his father with a crossbow. Athirius II was given the traumatic experience of watching his father’s life ended from the window he was waving out of. The motives of this dwarf remain unknown to Athirius II.

Athirius II was extremely traumatized by this experience, and went months after the event without speaking, and eating scarce amounts. Each day Athirius would go out into the woods by himself, and often returned that afternoon with bloody hands. The farmers from Ager began to wonder what was happening to some of their smaller livestock, as animals started to disappear every few days. Athirius’s mother Andrea Owl couldn't cope with the stress of it all, first her husband dying and then one of her sons becoming a reclusive killer was too much for her to handle. Adrea became addicted to cactus green, and while it made her happy, it was fast running their family out of money, and diminishing her skills to look after her two sons.

As time went on, the animals Athirius II killed stopped going to waste and began winding up on the Owl dinner table for Athirius and his younger brother, due to their mother’s incompetence. Eventually, Andrea died of a cactus green overdose and the two boys were sent off to different parts of the world. Artikus, Athirius II’s younger brother, was send to the elven lands to be cared for by distant relatives of the Owl family, whilst Athirius II was sent to live with his godfather Thorenir Elendil in Winterhall. Athirius continued his old ways, venturing off into the forest each day and hunting stray animals, though he became better at covering his tracks as he knew Thorenir and the Elendils wouldnt be as lenient as their mother had been about his addiction.

One day, when Athirius was twelve, he was out in the forest when he say a peasant from the town skinning a deer he had caught. Athirius had killed plenty of animals now, and he figured a human would be no different. He fast enough to evade the man, and large enough to give up a reasonable fight, and still; the peasant had not seen him. Athirius’s addiction took over, he charged the peasant and dug his hunting knife deep into his back. As the peasant writhed in pain, Athirius struggled to remove the knife as it was wedged deep into the flesh. When he finally managed to remove it, Athirius took the blade and slit the man’s neck to end his suffering.

It was late Autum and the snow had begun to fall in Ildon county, meaning it was not hard for Athirius dig a hole in the white expanse covering the forest floor and throw the peasant man's body inside before closing it over again. That night there was much speculation in the town over what had happened to the missing man, and while the townspeople didn't see what had truly happened, Thorenir did. That night Thorenir pulled Athirius aside. He knew that the boy must have had something to do with the peasant man’s death, as he had followed his godson into the woods several times before to see what he was up to. Thorenir began to help Athirius off his path to being a killer, telling stories of how Athirius I had been a knight who had protected the people from such men, and that one day Athirius II would do the same.

After several months, Thorenir’s continuous work paid off and Athirius stopped his ventures into the woods. From then, Athirius became more of a responsible teenager. Instead of sitting around being sullen and wandering the woods, Athirius began to spend his time reading literature, generally helping out around the town of Ildon, and training with a blade in his spare time, hoping one day he would be able to put his inherited skill to use as a knight himself one day. Although Athirius had stopped his killing, deep down he still craved to kill something, though he would be able to suppress this urge for many years to come.

Four years later, Thorenir Elendil was at a party in Solace when he came across the Emperor. After exchanging words, Thorenir reminded the Emperor that the son of his late Dragon Guard leader, Athirius Owl I, was in his care at Winterhall. The Emperor inquired as to how old the boy was, and upon finding he was fifteen, offered him a job as his squire. Thorenir brought the Emperor’s offer to Athirius, who graciously accepted and moved into his father’s old Arethor manor. Squiring for Godfrey, Athirius often was used to enforce the law, and hence his cravings were satisfied, simply through doing his job and without ending the lives of any innocents.

Years went by, Athirius II took control of his father’s old county, Owlswood, and his childhood home within it. When he was seventeen, Athirius wrote to his relatives in the Elven lands asking for Artikus to be brought home to Oren. Days later, Artikus Owl arrived in Oren by boat and the two brothers were reunited once more. The years went on, Athirius served Godfrey while his little brother searched for work of his own. Eventually came the time when the races of Aegis moved on from Asulon, and landed in Elysium. There, Emperor Godfrey Horen knighted Athirius Owl II, and placed him in command of his dragon guard. Since, Athirius has been working on getting the order his father founded functioning once more, whilst maintaining close relations with his godfather Thorenir, and his father’s old friend Martin Loyola.
