    Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Hobbits called Hobbits because they're from Hobbiton, and halflings refers to the race itself?

      That makes sense but seems odd since all halflings are referred to as Hobbits. Maybe Hobbiton was named after them instead?

      Hobbit and Halfing are ambiguous terms. As is shirefolk, Little people, Stunted Dwarves etc... It they technically in most fantasy do not have a set name to give themselves past Tolkien which leans towards the race being called a Hobbit.
