Not surprising. A lot of people apply to LotC specifically with the idea that they want to play a character who learns magic. When we basically tell them "No you have to wait a long time and Rp it" that turns them off severely.

That's understandable, but new players also should realize that magic is easily abused, and it's better to make sure a player understands how to rp properly before they learn. That way, they don't need to be blacklisted for bad rp after picking up magic before even developing their rp. Most of the time I would agree with you, preventative measures are better than cures.. however in this case I disagree. Most people don't go powergaming wildly. The few people who do are generally banned rather quickly. I am firmly against ooc barriers to Rp which the MAT seriously is. They just make Rp harder to get into for new people and make LotC more of an ooc clusterfvck than it already is.
