Kingdom of England
Upon the arrival of the Byzantian diplomat, a private meeting was held between him and the council, to keep word of the alliance out of the eyes and ears of the rest of the court. Queen Regent Matilda and Crown Prince Eustace took their rightful places at the councils head, both of them intent to listen to what the envoy had to say.
And so they sat, to speak of politics, alliance and wealth. When the possibility of a union by blood was raised, however, the diplomat could give no indefinite answer. With that, a letter was drafted, addressed to Basileus Gray and only the Basileus, unless another was given the authority and permission to read over it. It would read the following:
To the grand and rightful Basileus Gray, the true Emperor of the Byzantine people,
This is not King Stephen that writes back to you, but rather his wife, Queen Matilda of England. Do not fret, however, for this is no upright denial of your fair proposal nor any unofficial letter to slander your name. My husband is away at war with the heretical King Bjorn of Sweden, and I have been passed the mantle of regency during his absence.
Now, onto the topic at hand; your offer for alliance pleases me greatly, and it would be more than an honour to see our two forces combined at times of war and strife. We do have, however, a term of our own.
I feel it only right that should we be allied, it should be through blood and not bond. Blood is a stronger connection the companionship and glory by far, and I feel the both of us can cede from this con-joinment.
My son and the future king of England, Prince Eustace, needs a wife, as young as he may be. Already have we asked the Norwegian King for a blood-bond in exchange for the 31 longships sent to aid in the war, but he upright denied the offer, instead promising to cede us over the Isle of Man; a pitiful re-payment.
If memory serves me correct, then I'm aware you have a un-courted daughter of your own. A couple, perhaps I have no heard of? It makes no matter. As I say, I would like for a daughter or female relative of yours to marry my son, so that in the future, when my husband and I pass on from this world and into the next, Eustace IV will have a bride of his own and the bloodline would remain secure.
Please, do consider this offer. I feel the both of us could benefit from such, as mentioned earlier in the letter.
With good regards, may you live in contempt and harmony,
Matilda I of Boulogne, Queen Regent of England and Lady of the House of Blois through union.
The shores of Norway...
After much travel and delay, the remaining English forces have finally landed at Norwegian shores, the King himself being the first to step down and greet whoever awaits them.
"I do apologise for the wait, storms and rogue waves kept us at bay for most of the journey. Is your King about? I would like to speak with him before we go forth on the march towards Sweden."
