Is the popular opinion on monsters and higher beings really; "If I can't beat it 1v1, it's bad?"
Talking about Keepers, Wraiths, Dragons, Voidal horrors, et cetera.

I really hope it isn't the case. Too many people complain about others having an unfair advantage or having anything above what they have. To them, I say this: If every storm trooper could 1v1 a Jedi, or every rebel could easily kill a Sith, would Star Wars be even remotely interesting? Change is what makes things interesting, and change only occurs when things are not even, balanced and fair.
I don't get it when a character has gained a certain ability over a long period of time (e.g. Wraiths, Keepers, Shades, A powerful Fire evocationist) is considered 'too powerful' when compared to normal/new people. In the story, these characters will have already been alive long enough to develop this. Yours has not. Life is not fair! If it were, it would be boring. And yet, this is the mindset that is encouraged on LotC. Some people go so far as to say everyone should be exactly equal in power. The reason why this won't work in creating a beautiful story is because stories are organic, and a made by the actions of every character. If you can't even have the possibility of becoming stronger, better or faster, what is the point of writing the story? Even heros develop, in books. They go from peasant to bandit to Robin Hood! But, by golly, they don't become a Robin Hood in one go, or complain that being a peasant sucks, and the rich shouldn't have an army because it is 'unfair'. Everything is relative.
