from David Wootton's 'The Invention of Science'
this is just a small example of what the common man in the 16th century would believe in, much less the 15th. there seems to exist a bizarre thought-process where '21st century values' are claimed to be widespread on lotc and largely looked down upon (this is only ever brought up in matters of sexuality and what some would call 'woke-ness', I notice). in reality, though, the loose nature that the average player takes to killing, our believing in fantastical things, in myths, our basic understanding of astrology - half the absurdity of the earlier centuries is already established as fact here because the absurdity is true. it's utterly insane to claim that our server is filled with 21st century values because it simply is not. the main moral points - our attitude to life, our system of justice, our free speech rights, our religious beliefs and freedoms - are all incredibly basic and undeveloped; bandits are slain instead of imprisoned, people usually don't get fair trials on lotc, if you insult the king you can expect to get beheaded, we are all perfectly willing to slaughter others for our religion (see the recent war). so what if someone chooses to roleplay a gay character? we believe that the stars and sun are both gods, we know of magical ointments that instantly cure wounds, we know that werewolves exist, we believe in unicorns, we believe and practice magic and witchcraft, we have utter faith in our bizarre myths and origin stories, we know that magical storms cast by evil magicians exist, we believe in saints and miracles - is that not enough immersion for you?
I would say that if your immersion is broken by the mere fact that two men are kissing (ew!!!!!) or by the fact that someone chooses to spare anothers life or that haense men don't actually beat their wives then you need to reevaluate what you come to lotc for; is it the roleplay narrative, is it the story of your characters, or is it the experience of olden and more antiquated values? if it's the first, then this shouldn't be a problem. if it's the latter, then I'm afraid that you've come to the wrong place - this being, above all else, a roleplay server, creative freedom being an essential part in that.
bit of a rant yes but I'm in the mood. if you were referring to some other 21st century value (grarh! why no racism) then feel free to leave a message below clarifying. either way my basic principle stands
