  3. Somewhere - A large being heard of the events from a friend. It paused in its daily routine, something in which it did not normally do. "I believe I remember this one, Yes." It said in a calm tone as its gaze moved over the waters in front of itself. "I will reflect on this, as it upsets me." A Young Elf heard of the man's death as he kicked up his feet onto a nearby table. Grabbing a bottle of booze, he took a long sip. "You're telling me - my favorite smith is dead? What's a man to do now?" He asked no one before sighing and raising the bottle. He soon downed it in the name of his dear friend. The Basrid Boy frowned, soon turning to his friend Val, prepared to comfort her as he mentor had died. "I'm sorry to hear of this, Val. Here's to hoping for better days, ai?" He asked, soon moving to help with the jewelry shop as he was needed. @Jtit

  6. Soil of the Empire Published on the 13th of the Sun's Smile A drawing of a plant from Esbec. Introduction I, Anthony Alexios Basrid have been tasked with writing a paper about the various types of soil throughout the empire and neighboring areas by the Arch Chancellor. This paper intends to discuss the different types of soils found in eight distinct regions, which are labeled on the map below. Regions of Soil To describe the different types of soil in and around Oren, I first split the map into eight distinct regions. The first region is Providence and the area directly above it. The second region is the area leading up to Providence and the lands of Redenford. The third region is the mountains that serve as our current borders and extend upwards past our borders. The Pale and its lands are included in the fourth region and the forest above it is marked as the fifth. The sixth region in the top right is for the swamps by Providence, the seventh soil region is New Esbec, and finally, the eighth region is the area directly to the west of Oren’s borders. A map depicting the soil regions described above. Describing the Soil This section of the paper will describe the soils listed above, specifically the composition and the characteristics that describe them. Region One The first region encompasses Providence and the lands above it. The soil in this region is described as containing little rocks and other sediments and is exceptionally good for growing various crops, as seen by the fields in front and behind Providence. The earthen structures and trees that do inhabit these plains are sparse, as they are mostly removed and replaced with farming lands. Overall, this region is especially fertile and has the potential to house many more farms. Region Two This second region contains the town of Redenford and Southbridge along with the roads that lead up to Providence. The soil in these lands is somewhat fertile, but there are many trees and rocks that would make farming difficult. Another defining factor of these lands is the gentle slope that leads to the mountains. The composition of this soil is mostly what you’d expect though occasionally there are large roots that grow throughout the soil. All in all, this region is suitable for most types of farming but would require much work to clear the lands of the natural foliage and rocks. Region Three The third region is the natural formation of mountains that currently act as part of our border. The soil in these lands has a composition that mostly consists of rocks and other small sediments that are often broken apart by the rain or external forces, such as falling rocks or animals. These mountains are largely unstable to walk on and the little soil that they do contain is mostly held together by the bushes and other small plants that grow along the steep terrain. Region Four The fourth region encompasses The Pale and other towns that exist in the dense forest. This soil is very rich due to the dense canopy above it. As many of the leaves above fall down to the ground below, they begin to decompose, which forms a soil that would be very suitable for farming. One large problem with farming these lands is that the trees allow little sunlight to reach the ground, and also that these trees have deep roots, making it difficult to clear the large areas that would be needed for farming. Region Five The fifth region is the forest above Providence and is described as a mix between regions two and three. While this area may initially look good for farming, one will soon realize that the soil of these lands is mostly inhabited by many rocks and roots due to the various trees and steep cliffs that define this region. In addition to these cliffs and trees, there are also many small lakes and streams that run through these lands, causing the construction of large farm plots to be difficult. Region Six The swamplands directly to the northeast of Providence are the defining factor of this region and are not very suitable for farmland or for large building constructions. While the soil in these lands may be free from the rocks and roots of the other regions, it is mostly mud due to the large amounts of sitting water. It is of the writer’s opinion that these lands are not suited for much of anything besides light encampments. Region Seven Region seven is made up of Esbec and the encompassing lands. Esbec is its own region due to the fact that this village has mostly changed the surrounding areas so that it is liveable. While the village does rest on the side of a mountain, Esbec has largely patted down the soil to prevent rock slides and other problems that occur in the surrounding areas. Because of this patting down, the soil composition has drastically changed from its nearby areas. While the soil of Esbec does still contain many rocks, it is best described as compact dirt with little sediments, due to the many foot travels and animals that roam around the region. Region Eight The eighth and final region is the area to the west of the mountains. This area has two main defining characteristics that split it into two sections. The northern part of region eight contains fewer trees than its southern counterpart, but it is more mountainous. This area is best described as having rolling hills that contain some rocks and other sediments. The lower or southern region is best described as having more flatlands that are inhabited by numerous trees. This soil is equally as fertile as the northern region but does contain more roots and other earthen objects. Overall, this region would be very good for farmland to be constructed on, though the lower half would require trees to be cleared before such could be constructed. Conclusion The Empire has many different soil variations and types throughout its lands and surrounding areas, though the soil that is best for farming is found within regions one, two, and eight. There are also other regions that are unsuitable for farming, such as regions six and three. While it is essential to look at just soil quality before deciding on where to farm and build structures, it is also important to look at the surrounding structures and natural occurrences that happen in the areas. 9. Waterways of the Empire Published on the 12th of Tobais's Bounty, 1804 A depiction of two men traversing the rivers of Esbec. Introduction I, Anthony Alexios Basrid have been tasked with writing a paper about the various streams and rivers of the empire by the Arch Chancellor. This paper aims to discuss the depth, width, name, and elevation of the rivers throughout these lands. Naming the Waters To accurately describe the rivers of Oren I believe it necessary to name them so that they can be referenced throughout the paper. The first and largest river is named Augusta River, after the most recent Empress. This river is highlighted in red on the map below and connects the main ocean to Oren and Haense. The second waterway is named Sabari River - a name based on an ISA General of the past and is highlighted green on the map. The third major waterway is called Esbec Inlet, as Esbec is the small town that resides along the water. Finally, the fourth major waterway is named Reden River, after the town that it leads up to. A map depicting the various waterways of the Empire and their names. Describing the Waterways This section of the paper will describe the waterways listed above, specifically their average width, depth, and elevation changes. Augusta River This river is the largest of all mentioned above. The Augusta River is estimated to be thirteen hundred meters in length, starting at the ocean and ending at the Haense lake, and is about twenty-four meters above sea level. On average, this river is around six or more meters deep and has a width of fifty meters. One special thing to note is that the main Providence bridge does intersect with the waters of this river, splitting it into four, four-meter wide paths. A final thing to note is that starting slightly before the bridge, the water does begin to descend to sea level, which occurs over two hundred meters. Reden River This river stems off of the Augusta River and begins with an average width of twenty-seven meters and a depth of eight meters but quickly becomes more shallow as you approach “Moose Bridge” before once more opening up into a lake. This lake then has a narrow opening about seven meters wide and one meter deep that leads into a river that then travels under one more bridge before finally stopping at the base of Redenford. It is estimated that the total length of this river is about seven hundred meters, and is consistently twenty-four meters above sea level. Sabari River This waterway begins at a bridge that leads to New Esbec, The Pale, and Redenford. This river has an average width of twenty-four meters throughout but the depth changes wildly depending on where you are, ranging from seven meters deep at the beginning, to three meters deep towards the middle of the waterway, and finally back to a depth of nine meters. This stream is estimated to be about six hundred meters in length and is consistently twenty-four meters above sea level. Esbec Inlet This inlet began much as the Sabari River did. A singular bridge marks the entrance to this waterway, creating a simple lake that boats cannot leave or enter. The average width of this lake is one hundred meters and the average depth is estimated to be eight meters. The overall length of this inlet is also estimated to be three hundred meters, making this the smallest of all the waterways in Oren. Conclusion The Empire has many different waterways that split our lands but overall, boat travel is hindered by the various bridges that were constructed so that we may quickly traverse our lands on foot. Small fishing vessels may be able to be constructed, but it would ultimately be difficult to traverse through the various different paths with larger vessels. 16. Thanks from the Air I, Anthony Alexios Basrid along with my copilot Valeria vas Ruthern would like to report a successful first aeronautic flight above providence at a height of three hundred meters on the 6th of Sigismund’s End, 1803. The balloon was launched in optimal conditions, with little wind and no clouds, and remained in the air for about half a day before successfully landing on its launching platform (albeit a bit off-center). While in the air, we have managed to gather a few measurements such as wind direction and temperature, among others. Special thanks are due to the individuals listed below for their continued support of our project: The Emperor (@Hunwald): For five hundred cubic meters of silk, and three hundred feet of rope. The Arch Chancellor (@Nectorist): For his letter showcasing his faith in our abilities as well as granting us access to build on palace grounds. The Secretary of the Treasury (@EmbryoGod): For delivering the silks and ropes in a timely fashion Rosetta d’Amato (@Itz_Cookie): For weaving the basket on which we stood. Vespira d’Arkent (@PrincessSnowie): For double-checking the servant’s sewing on the envelope. Charles d'Arkent & Anna Pruvia-Provins (@Sporan& @libertyybelle) : For allowing us to use the palace grounds. The Basrid Family (@Ivorey@KBR@Dyl@Axelu): For continued support of our drive towards the sciences. And Many Others! We hope to soon partake on a flight to Haelun'or but until then, Onwards and Upwards, Anthony Alexios Basrid & Valeria vas Ruthern.
