Bears of the North

   

History:

 

Long ago in the Northern mountains of Aegis, Harren, son of Horen, lead the great Harrenite tribe on a quest to conquer all others. Along his path Harren encountered the elven tribe of Sarai, and after a long, bitter war the two tribes put down their arms and mixed blood. The creation of this mix was the Adunian race, and the family of Harren would rule it for many years to come. At the beginning of the third Adunian era, Harren's family was given an official name by his great great grandson. The ruling Adunian clan became known as the Elendils, and were lead by a singular Clan Elder. The Elendils were the glue that kept the Adunian clans united over the ages, and when they fell to the undead in Old Ildon, the clans-people were scattered. Only when Halboron and Artorus Elendil rose from the ashes to reunite their clan did the Adunia begin to regain strength. Adunia has gone through lows and highs throughout history, from being a nomadic people scurrying in the wilds to now holding their own kingdom. Throughout it all, Clan Elendil has led the Adunians through thick and thin.

 

The Elendil Line:

 

~The Harrenite Age~

High Elder Harren I

Harren, son of Horen, is considered the father of the Adunians. Believed to be Horen’s favored son, Harren possessed the ‘Circlet of Horen’, which was believed to be worn by Horen himself. Harren, instead of staying in the human lands, decided to move his tribe away from the others, in search for a new land. They came across the mountains of Adunii, where the tribe of Harren took camp. However, his tribe was not the only one to call the mountain their home. A tribe of Wood Elves, led by Chieftess Sarai, attacked the tribe of humans. Year after year the conflict continued, until an agreement between Sarai and Harren was soon made. Sarai and Harren had married, and other Wood Elves and Humans married the others, mixing the blood. Now with full claim to the mountains, a community developed. He reigned peacefully until his death.

 

High Elder Baren I

Baren continued on his father’s legacy and command, not changing much of the government Harren had in place. Baren did, however, solidify the ranks of Chieftains among the clans. During the reign of Baren, the Harenite tribe had grown sevenfold, almost the size for a small kingdom. Baren waged war on many smaller tribes, conquering and enveloping their people into the Harenite tribe. Baren died in battle against one of these tribes.

 

 

~The Ildunian Age~

King Olrandir I

Olrandir, unlike Baren and Harren, wanted to expand out of their normal land near the mountain. Determined to expand the tribe’s power and might, he moved the already massive population of the mixed blood towards the eastern sea of Aegis. After the reaching the North Eastern Sea, he ordered his people to stop. After seeing other cities of stone on his travels, he ordered the men to build their own city, soon called the City of Ildunia. It took half of Olrandir’s life to finish the marvel of the city, but it was eventually complete and ready for rule. Humans flocked from other tribes to the City of Ildunia, where it flourished as one of the greatest cities in Northern Aegis. Clans were eventually developed from the families in the original tribe, a system of chieftainship was developed. Laws were written, the famous Council of Thanes was developed, and the Clan Militia was created. The reign of King Olrandir I was seen as a golden age in the early Adunian history.

King Arendil I

Arendil, son of Olrandir, was not as successful as his father. Actually much the opposite occured. Arendil favored the Harrenite clans, placing them in council positions and removing pure-blooded humans from power. Opressment soon followed the human’s power loss, and eventually a rebellion. Led by Owyn Godwinson, the humans led a coup d'etat against Arendil, slaying him and his fellow supporters. Owyn banished the Adunians from Ildunia, expect a few which created the Rhodirs.

 

 

~The First Ildonian Age~

Lord Elendil I

Arendil’s son, Elendil, took his father’s place and led the Adunians out of Ildunia and into the far north. After treking for months in the Far North of Aegis, they reached new shoreline. There, Elendil ordered the building of wooden ships. Only three ships were made, and they were quickly boarded as took off farther into the Far North. Week after week, they spotted no land until the sighting of an isle (which later would be called the Adunian Isle by Elendil I). The ships landed, the Adunians set ashore onto the new land. Elendil marched the Adunians north, until a week later, when they approached the Northern point of the isle, where a large forest was laid. Ontop of a hill clearing in the forest, Lord Elendil ordered the building of a new city, a city called Ildon. Ildon was built out of wood instead of stone, the town was smaller but grew in short time. The Adunian keep was built upon the hill, and the rest of the town grew around it. A new age had begun, and with it changes. The Chieftainship of Clans was completely changed, the Clan Militia abolished. Elendil’s son, Cirimas, had created the first Adunian Rangers, including the first standing armed forced of the Adunians.

 

Lord Braen Elendil I

Elendil’s son, Braen, took his father’s throne as expected, but took his father’s name as his clan’s name. Before this, Clan Elendil had no official name except some names that peasants and/or nobles gave them. Lord Braen expanded the Adunians even farther onto the island, granting clans Earldoms and establishing a clan class system. The poorest of clans took land near the shore, which was seen as infertile and undesireable. Clans with more wealth and fame recieved Earldoms in the forest and land around Ildon. The richest clans were given positions on the Council of Thanes and stayed inside the walls of Ildon. Lord Braen’s rule was prosperous and peaceful, no major conflicts occured.

 

Captain Cirimas Elendil I

Cirimas Elendil, older brother of Braen, is considered the founder of the Adunian Rangers and first real military power in the service of the Adunians and Clan Elendil. Though not much is known of what Cirimas did or how he ran the Rangers, he is considered one of the the most talented leaders. The Coat of Cirimas is accredited to him, which is passed down to each Ranger Captain.

Lord Dranan Elendil I

Dranan Elendil, son of Braen, was the seventh leader of the Adunians. Not much is written about his life other than the continued growth of the Adunians on the Adunian Isle.

Lord Rymuel Elendil I

Rymeul Elendil, son of Dranan, was the eight leader of the Adunians. His reign was mainly peaceful and uneventful at the start of his rule. However, during the middle years of his reign, he led an expedition across the Adunian Sea (which was last crossed when Elendil first came to the Adunian Isle.) Using small fishing vessels, Rymeul led a small party towards the mainland. When they reached shore, they encountered men of the Kingdom of Oren. Rymeul quickly requested meeting with the Orenian King, working out trade rights and peace between the two nations. Also agreed between the Adunian Lord and Orenian King was the giving of several men to teach the Adunian people the common tongue.

Lord Anmes Elendil I

Anmes Elendil, son of Rymeul, was the ninth leader of the Adunians. During his reign, common became the main language of commerce and government work, the Old Tongue almost nearly forgotten with the exception of Clan Elders and religious leaders.

Lord Bethrol Elendil I

Bethrol Elendil, son of Anmes, was the tenth leader of the Adunians. Bethrol's major accomplishment during his reign was the formation of the Adunian Regiment. Seeing the Adunian Rangers as old and unfit for the current needs of the Adunian people, he reoutfitted the men to an armored force.

Lord Rydel Elendil I

Rydel Elendil, son of Bethrol, was the eleventh leader of the Adunians. The rule of Rydel is seen as a time of strife and peril, a weak point in the long history of the Adunians. Rydel's Thane Steward, a man by the name of Icarius Delmar, had seen Rydel unfit to rule the land of Al’Ildic. Plotting with other unhappy clans, Icarius Delmar began a coup d’etat on Rydel. However, the coup failed, causing Icarius and his supporters to retreat out of the capital city of Ildon. Rydel places his elder brother, a man named Thorenir Elendil, to begin the Adunian Legion to combat Icarius’ rebel forces. Every man from 17 to 80 was conscripted into the Legion, creating the largest known Adunian military force to date. Thorenir also formed the Adunian Rangers and the Ildician Order within the Adunian Legion, the Ranges used as special ops and the Ildicians to guard the loyal Thanes of the Thane’s Council. Battle raged on the for years, and entire clans were slaughtered in the process on both sides. Eventually, Thorenir led a small band of Adunian Rangers to assassinate Icarius, which suceeded and ended the war. However, the war had already taken is toll on the Adunian people, the population diminished. The Legion was destroyed, and the Adunian Rangers once again became the main military force of the Adunians. Rebuilding followed, Thorenir eventually stepped down as the Ranger Captian to be given to Rydel’s eldest son, Halboron Elendil. As time went on, Rydel’s youngest, who was called Aren Elendil, was promised to receive the Adunian Lordship after four years in the Rangers. However, on the third year of duty, the city of Ildon had encountered an orcish raiding party that had camped on the southern tip of the Adunian Isle. Halboron dispatched Aren Elendil and a small squad to take care of the menace. After a few days of tracking, Aren and the small squad ambushed the orcs. The squad had dealt with the orcs, but in the process, Aren had been killed by the orcish leader. Rydel had to hold on the Adunian Lordship for two more years, until his infant son Artorus could gain the title. However, the undead invasion of Aegis had begun, and attacked the city of Ildon. Halboron was knocked unconscious during the battle, and his men were slaughtered by the undead. When he had awoken, he made his way to the Elendil keep, where he took the infant Artorus and left. Rydel had died trying to protect his wife and child.

 

Captain Thorenir Elendil I

Thorenir Elendil, older brother of Rydel I, was the captain of the Rangers during Rydel's long reign. Unlike Rydel, Thorenir was a more patient man, and too many people, a better leader. It was under Thorenir's command that Icarus Delmar was assassinated. Thorenir died before the reign of Rydel was complete, though his legacy is one of grave importance to the Clan.

 

~The Second Ildonian Age~

Captain Halboron Elendil I

Halboron, older brother of Aren and Artorus, was the captain of the Rangers after the death of Thorenir I.Halboron was one of the few remaining survivors of the orcish raids that was dispatched and the Undead Invasion of the Adunian Isle. He was known to have cared greatly for his younger brother Artorus (who would soon become the Adunian Lord) and the well-being of the Adunian people. He assisted Artorus and other stranded Adunians in building the County of Ildon in the Duchy of Westfall of the Kingdom of Renatus. He was  Captain of the Adunian Rangers and Bannermen till his death during the first Adunian Rebellion.

 

Aren Elendil I

Aren Elendil, middle brother of Halboron and Artorus, was a Ranger and heir to the Adunian line. Aren's life was cut short, however, as he was one of the many killed during the Orcish raids upon the Adunian Isle.

Lord Artorus Elendil I

Artorus Elendil, youngest brother of Halboron and Aren, was the next in line to the Adunian Lordship after the death of Aren I. Artorus was merely an infant during the Undead Invasion, saved by his eldest brother Halboron. Halboron had taken Artorus to the land of Asulon, to which he was raised by adopted parents. Artorus grew up and joined the Pheonix Guard, to which he raised up to the rank of Captain. The Duke of Westfall granted Artorus a county for his service to the Kingdom of Renatus. With his new land and noble title, Artorus begins to call the Adunians who had fleed to Asulon to come back to their natural birth right. Halboron also came back aswell, assisting Artorus in his managing and building. The reign of Artorus I was seen as a great growth for the Adunians, though he faltered near the end of his life. Artorus had tensions with the Renatusian Kind, Godfrey I and most nobles knew it. Two other unhappy noblemen came to Artorus. First was the old Pheonix King, Ezekial Tarus, wishing to reclaim his old glories. The other was Lord Norsem, who was unhappy with his current power within the Kingdom. Artorus launched a rebellion against the Kingdom of Renatus, though it ended in failure. Artorus was executed with Norsem and Ezekial, with Norsem being expelled from the Kingdom. It was with the work of Halboron's son, Thorenir II, and Artorus' son, Torrhen, that the Adunians remained in the Kingdom of Renatus.

Appearance:

 

Elendils usually bear black or dark grey hair (with the very rare exception of brown). Their eyes range from grey, to brown to green, but grey is most common of the three. An Elendil is about the height of a normal human, ranging from 5’11” to 6’4”, unlike several of the other best known clans, that are notoriously taller. Almost all male adult Elendils bear facial hair. This can range from some stubble, to a neatly trimmed beard or even a glorious mustache. Most Elendils throughout history have chosen the last of the three, though recently the line of Aren has been known to stray away from this tradition, bearing neat beards trimmed close to the face, and never hanging from it. Despite this, Elendils outside of the line (particularly the descendants of Halboron) have been known to stay true to the mustache-bearing tradition.

 

Traits:

 

Elendils are usually far slower to anger than other Adunians, and have more political minds due to their many centuries of leadership. Like all pure-blooded Adunians, Elendils tend to live to around 180.
