From within the halls of Kal’Ithrun, a large dwarf clad in iron makes his way towards the council chamber, his blue hood hung low over his head. From beneath it, a large fiery black beard falls over his chest while his black eyes gleam in the gentle glow of the candle light. As he enters the chamber, he offers a nod to the Grand King and the other Lords. Carefully sliding a scroll from underneath his chestplate, he unrolls it infront of him. “Ah breng dis befur meh fello Lurds frum ah lad naym'd Wulfgar Grandaxe, 'e ses et beh frum 'is fadder.” Lord Fariken Irongut steps closer to the circle of lords and grips the old piece of paper between his stubby fingers. Turning to look at the whole council, he begins to read the message aloud.

“Dear Wulfgar, my eldest son,

I write this letter to you because I fear a greater darkness is emerging, though we have not yet the wisdom to see it. It is now that I choose to reveal the true purpose of my efforts. Years from the Grand Kingdom have left me weary. If it were not for the cold mountain wind against my skin, I feel my mind would not have remained so wholesome. From the days of my Lordship to the Grand Kingdom, I have felt a darkness preside over these lands. Ondnarch has returned and with his coming, he brings a wrath that could one day lead our kin to ruin. At the command of this fallen Aengul are legions of darkness, unfathomable in strength and number. Yet I believe now, I have learnt the truth of his undoing.

We all know the legend. King Barradin and the Triumvirate of Rune Lords bound Ondnarch’s soul into the Kal’Varak and saved his kin from certain doom. After that however, history teaches us only that the shard was taken to Asulon, along with many of Barradin’s kin. From there, we lost contact with the colony. It was only as we made our passing from Aegis that we learnt of the ill fate of his people. The Kal’Varak was unearthed from beneath the ground and Ondnarch’s power unleashed again.

It took many months to decipher the contents of the books we uncovered from Khaz’Ardol. Largely, the texts spoke of conflict amongst the dwarves who resided in Barradin’s colony. Yet there was one tome that caught my interest. It spoke of a hammer, once possessed by the King himself, known only as ‘Ondnarch’s Bane.’ This weapon was of great value to the dwarves, none more so than Barradin himself. Though the colony was lost, a thief of the Scriber Folk took it for himself. He travelled across the ocean and sealed it beneath the ground in the lands we now know as Anthos.

I regretfully say that in my own greed, I sought to recover the hammer for myself. For days I searched the depths of Khaz’Ardol but to no avail. I retired from the Lord’s Council and travelled north, to where the Scriber had made his encampment in the years before we arrived in these lands. Months of searching and traversing the many dangers of the north led me no closer to any sign of the hammer’s whereabouts.

It was only when I returned to the Grand Kingdom that I learned of Thorin’s fate at the hands of Ondnarch. Ashamed that my greed had led me astray from my duties, I devoted my life to the faith, preaching the word of our gods. I believed for so many years that Barradin’s hammer was no more than a mere myth. That was until I found the Kal’Varak. Stored deep within the vaults of the Temple of the Brathmordakin, there I delved into the memories of Ondnarch. I learnt of his torment and his anger. Finally I saw the truth. Before Ondnarch was imprisoned within the Kal’Varak, Barradin had managed to land a final blow upon the beast. In doing so, a portion of Ondnarch’s strength was channelled into the hammer and thus Barradin wielded within his hands, the power of an Aengul.

The last of the Scriber Folk likely never knew the capability of what he possessed. Yet I knew at that moment if I did not find the hammer, another soon would. After seeking Yemekar’s guidance, I enlisted in the Teutonic Order in hopes that I could utilise their forces in finding its location. I travelled further into the north and there among a ruin, I uncovered a clue. Though the hammer itself was not to be found, the Scriber had left a parchment buried in a chest beneath the snow. Below, I have translated the symbols it contained into the common tongue.

“The hammer of Barradin lies beneath the mountains, beyond Khaz’Ardol, where upon the last hour of the First Seed, the sun’s rays will meet from across the Western Sea.”

I hope now my son you understand the grave importance of what I must do. With the discovery of this final relic, the tides will turn. For too long have we, the sons of Urguan, dwindled as a shadow of our once great people. From the ashes, we will rise again with the power needed to defeat this evil. I make one final passage to Yemekar’s Shrine. From there, I intend to decipher the riddle and return the hammer to the Grand King so that he may possess what is needed to defend his people. If I am to fail, Wulfgar, do not mourn my passing. I will rest easy in the halls of our fathers, knowing that I have given my life for our people’s sake. You alone will then be left with the duty of delivering this information to the Lord’s Council. Ensure that it falls into their hands and their hands only.

Live by what I have taught you, my son. Follow the path your heart tells you is right and one day you will find truth.”

((Just a reminder, the letter is only shown to Wulgar Grandaxe, and the Dwarven Lord's Council. Since none have made a reply, It would be unlikely that any others would know of it.))

*Dizzy Irongrinder stares at the carved stone in the hall, seeming distant. He remains silent for some time before clearing his throat. Turning his gaze he locks eyes with each of the lords, and the king, in turn before speaking. His voice low and spoken as by one deep in thought, echoing across the stones of the hall his words resonate*

"Aye, well t'is brings 'ope tu me, but we cannae sit by an let tu fate o-our people rest in t'a 'ands o-un, no matter 'ow capable. We must take action befure tragedy befalls bot' t'is brave soul or t'a kingdom. Send out volunteer warriors tu search fer 'im, or at t'a vereh least set out patrols tu watch fer 'is return.

*Dizzy turns his gaze to a glowing brazier in the hall, the flames and sparks dancing across the bright embers. Closing his eyes he breaths in deeply, feeling the warmth of the hall around him. Opening his eyes he looks back to the Grand King, a new light present in his gaze*

"Now is t'a toime tu act befure our enemy does, least t'is city, its people, an all we 'old dear beh lost tu t'a cold."

*Aldal Ireheart, who presumably gets a chance to read the letter since he is a Remembrancer, strokes his beard thoughtfully*

Kardel, staying silent most of the time, replies to Aldal's comment, having attended the meeting because his Alchemist's Fire has been a success so far in the past.

"Nae. . .eht nae be buried. Dey must'a been tae smurt fer dat. Dey mayde sum sort o' key'ole dat leads ta un chaymbah containin' da 'ammer. Eht will nae be dat easeh."

*Aldal Ireheart nods at Kardel's reply*

"Aye, yeh're roite... p'raps deh sun will shoine on a rock face, indicatin' this 'idden door?"

((My original thought exactly, but I thought it was a bit too "Lord of The Rings-y."))

King Indago Stormhammer stands upon his throne, hearing of what is being told before him.  Slowly, he stands up,  as he does not believe what he is being told.  Glancing at the lords beside him, he veers at the reader.  Once the message is delivered, he steps down upon the throne he sits upon.  His iron boots clashing amongst the royal carpet, he looks around the room.

Brethren, sons of Urguan!  This is a time of awakening.  For the hammer has been lost for ages and news of it shall proceed over all the darkness we are facing.  Men, this is worth more gold within our mines.  It is time to seek what is rightfully ours, what is rightfully mine!  The hammer does not belong to those who guard it.  It must be returned to who that forged it, to the kin that battled the beast of Ondnarch.  This will not be a battle, we will face a war upon the threat that lurks under the south.  All I ask from you men is to follow, follow the will of our predecessors to reconquer the wielded hammer.  I ask that you prepare, for the suffering we will face to reclaim what is ours and I ask that you give your honor.  Give your honor upon the brethren you proceed with as we will find our victory!

Grand King Indago looks around at the lords beside him, out of breath from his speech.  Shortly after, sits amongst the gold throne as he sees Onar take the news to the remembrancers.

*Odin leans hooded against a pillar by the door to the council chamber, having frequented the city over the past few months while reporting to the Grand King on human troop movements and trebuchet placements. He smiles, a glint of curiosity showing clearly in his all-seeing green eye.*

"I volunteer to come with the expedition, if that is acceptable. I know that it might seem strange, but perhaps it would be wise for this party to see some obstacles through a human's eyes. Or a bird's."

*Odin's ravens, Huginn and Muninn, caw to accentuate his point, as they soar lazily amongst the stout stone support beams that keep up the ceiling.*
