Chapter 3: Bula

Malog sits in his clan hall, and puts an arm around Durah as she sits holding their newest twins. He calls Nurena to come sit beside him. He gives her very brief summaries of the stories of Guldur and Yar, and proceeds to tell her the story of Yar's only cub, Bula. ((As in the previous two stories, this will be typed in English for the convenience of reader and writer alike.))

Bula was an archer of incredible skill. She was born to Yar and Agrog, and was the only cub they were able to have before Agrog died giving birth. Without a mother she was forced to look up to the other feorcs around the village, particularly her grandmother, Mazoga, who trained her in marksmanship when she was old enough. Through Mazoga's teachings and nearly constant practice, Bula eventually became one of the best archers in her village. For closer encounters, however, she preferred a pair of axes her uncle made for her.

For obvious reasons she harbored a famous hatred for dwarves. She took frequent trips to dwarf lands, from which she would almost invariably return the severed head of a dwarf or sometimes just a beard. Often times she wouldn't kill any dwarves, but would simply tie them to trees, cut off their beards and leave them there. Whether bringing back heads or beards, she always brought back samples of the herb her father died to retrieve. She would ask a shaman to burn it at Yar's burial mound as an offering to his spirit.

Bula's passion with which she honored her father eventually attracted the notice and admiration of a warrior named Urul. So impressed was he by her strength and devotion, that he resolved to make her his lifemate, and set off for dwarf lands with a small raiding party to retrieve for her a gift. He returned with a group of dwarven prisoners, all but one of whom he slaughtered like sheep at the entrance to her hut. The survivor was hamstrung, and his thumbs and big toes were cut off. This dwarf was given to Bula as a slave, thus winning her heart for Urul. Together they bore two cubs, Borug and Naga.

Bula lived to be ninety-six years old. It happened one night that a horrible commotion was heard from within the village. The war horn was sounded, followed by a bellowing voice alerting the village with a shout of "Zkaddurnakz!!!" Bula perched atop a large boulder to see a pair of young scaddernaks approaching the settlement.

The night was long and bloody, but the orcs defended their homes with few casualties. Bula, however, was one of the defenders lost to the deadly predators. She was burried with her bow and axes, and all the fallen orcs from that night were honored as heroes. Urul crafted a shield made of scaddernak exoskeleton, which he named after his fallen lifemate. So goes the story of Bula as it remains to this day.
