Helvetius 314 Share Posted June 3, 2014 Guide to Infamy How does one start to become infamous without being a necromancer or magical being? Well first, make sure your character has a legitimate background before walking down the path of infamy. A character who just appears out of the blue with no history isn't very frightening. In fact, he is more of a nuisance. Create a background and RP being good for a little to get to know people who live in your town and travel through. When you feel like you have left enough impressions of being a friendly man on other people, the 'action' that your character has been planning and/or scheming will be more effective. How do I make people fear my character? Don't kill them. If you're a bandit, thief, or corrupting person, refrain from killing your victims. Over time the number of people who have experienced your bandit/criminal RP (So long as it isn't PvP usually) will build up and you will gain a name for yourself while attracting criminal comrades to work with you. If you kidnap someone just for the sake of torturing then make sure you don't kill him/her. Killing someone after all of said torturing will make the victim forget being tortured and most likely believe that the whole experience was a waste of time OOCly. In fact the more you kill your victims after all of this RP you did to kidnap them, the more you are prone to being metagamed because they don't want you around. Feel free to kill his bodyguards or even leaving one of his bodyguards alive to run back to town, but do not kill your target. Infamy ingame is built by the number of people who remember you and your villainous deeds, not by OOC remembrance. But I want to be an Assassin/psycho who kills people secretly and never gets caught! I think a good deal of criminals want to be this. However leaving no trace and killing your victim means nobody will ever recognize you until you make a mistake (Thus you won't become very infamous). If you want to go down this path then how about making murder scenes that may/may not be disturbing RPly. Give yourself an alias or a name or even an abbreviation like V. or something and leave it by the murder scene. Keep in mind though that this path of killing secretly and never getting caught is one of the paths most prone to be metagamed. Players in OOC do not like to deal with supposedly 'invincible' characters. Even if your character is not invincible and everything is just timed well, the victims who died previously by your hand will unconsciously try to stay away or 'look your way'. I've become infamous but now I'm constantly being metagamed! People in the lands where I'm wanted let suspicious people through and stop only me, telling me to remove my hood/mask! I can't ban report them because it's virtually impossible to screenshot to show that they are metagaming! This is a common problem for criminals who become wanted/highly infamous but this is where you need a town or safe-haven. A town where you have conducted little to no criminal deeds so that you can RP regularly, have criminal meetings with your criminal organization, ect... If you don't want to live in a town, then make a hideout for meetings and criminal activities. You can't stop people who look at your IGN or suddenly say 'they ask to remove hoods all the time' without looking like your QQing or making a huge fuss. Then everyone gets annoyed and you lose some of your OOC respect and infamy. You can't really screenshot someone following you to catch you doing something evil despite being in full armor or hooded either without causing a huge fuss too. In the end, the more infamous you become the more criminal comrades you need. If you insist on playing a solo criminal then have a side character whose alignment is good to roleplay when you don't feel like being evil. That or as suggested, go and live in a town where you are least wanted and can still get information. This problem of being metagamed is inevitable so you need to be like water and flow around it. Also understand that one day or another your evil character shall come to an end permanently. Enjoy the guide :3.

Cola one 1 37 Share Posted June 3, 2014 +1, really good guide, but if I'd have made it I would've added something about trying to be as quirky and original as can be a villain, like instead of being a mastermind criminal who is also an amazing fighter, be one or the other, such as being a very intelligent villain, but not having much in terms of physical prowess, or a thuggish meat head that is quite strong, but not all too intelligent, mostly remaining alive due to luck. Cause a great way to getting famous is by doing something that hasn't been done all too often.

Coaster 2086 Share Posted June 4, 2014 There's certainly more practical, rewarding, and entertaining ways to gain "infamy" then what you've laid out here. You've described one particular method well - but what you advise against is in itself a way to becoming "infamous". Good guide anyway.
Helvetius 314 Author Share Posted June 4, 2014 There's certainly more practical, rewarding, and entertaining ways to gain "infamy" then what you've laid out here. You've described one particular method well - but what you advise against is in itself a way to becoming "infamous". Good guide anyway. True. The way I described was the one that held the most fruit in my particular way of playing for creating disruptions/fear/worry/terror and infamous recognition RPly. Each method though is dependable on how the person acts and responds with their character ICly and OOCly while also how many OOC annoyances said player can take in said method. Thus one method can have more chance of failure than another per person and likewise with success.
