I've been fishing for quite some time now, and I have looked in the forums and have not found anything on it so I must inquire and hopefully someone can answer:

 

Periodically I fish up what looks like a written book, but right as it reaches me it disappears into a cloud of black. Now this confused me the first time so I thought it was a glitch or I didn't somehow pick it up, yet after attempting to ' catch ' a few of them I am now confused as to why they are there. Is it just a left over something from something no longer existing, do I not have the correct ' skill ' to obtain it, or is there any purpose to these strange books?

Are they by any chance those books you get for enchanting MC items?

If they are, they are banned items IG, because they would allow for enchantments without GM or moderator control.

If they are not, and are just normal books, I have no idea...

I am not sure, they look like written books, all glowy and the like, when I reel them in. But again I never actually see them after that moment, as they disintegrate right when they reach me.

Does anyone know if MC added a rare chance of fishing up an enchanted book? Because that sounds like what is happening. Especially if you are seeing it, it would have to be a vanilla minecraft mechanic.

 

The fishing plugin we did have with the sponge nets was text based and the items appeared only when you broke your net to retrieve it.

They did in early 1.7; the 'bug' must be caused by the plugin which bans items.

So it is just a leftover, and cannot be obtained?

Yeah they're enchanting books, you can get them from fishing, and they're banned in game, that's why they keep disapearing.
