History

Robert was born into the lifestyle of a soldier; his mother’s birthing bed situated in the citadel of Ard Kerrack, whose walls had held the illustrious Order of the White Rose. He was the first of three, a triplet. Robert took after his father primarily, while his brother shared the looks of both his mother and father, and his sister was a near carbon copy of the red-haired woman that had bore the three into the world. The three were born into the royalty of the Kingdom of Kaedrin, and fostered for a time in the Imperial Palace at Abresi under the guidance of Lady Ari Horen, their Godmother.

The Chivay children were not the first children to grace the halls of the citadel, but they were certainly one of the loudest, especially Robert. As a young boy, the Prince explored the halls of Ard Kerrack, frequently watching patrols and soon participating in them himself, walking along the grandiose ramparts with his father’s old kettle helmet (That was outrageously oversized and thus forced him to adjust it at almost every step). His life as an aging child was filled with several expeditions around Northern Anthos, visiting Malinor, Kralta, Kingston and Abresi. As he came into his teenage years, he started his training with the Marked Men, and was personally trained by Temp and Adeon, known amongst them as the Hexer. Learning from a young age the anatomy and weaknesses of all types of mystical beings and monsters, Robert soon took this knowledge and applied it during his first monster hunt. Tagging along with the Marked at the young but capable age of sixteen, he and the company – who was also graced with the presence of Dagmer Volsung, a boy of about equal age to Robert – set out into the County of Witchwood, situated in the heart of the Kingdom of Kaedrin. Hearing rumors of a troll’s nest in the thickness of the forest, they set out to investigate, and soon enough found the lair. Treading carefully inside, they crept among sleeping trolls, discovering – with no great deal of sleuthing – that these trolls had a wicked tendency to maim and torture Elves and Humans alike. And so under the order of Temp, the Marked positioned themselves over the (loudly) sleeping trolls. Giving the signal, they plunged their swords – coated with silver for an added affect – into the stomachs of the creatures, hearing their sudden screams of terror. Robert and Dagmer had stabbed one together, and despite its screams, the creature died quickly (Temp had given them the runt of the trolls to deal with, considering the two boys’ age and experience). Adeon’s, on the other hand, was a beast that was difficult to bring down, and with a short order of crossbow bolts to the creatures neck, the raving beast fell at the feet of Robert and Dagmer. As was tradition, the Marked cut off trophies from their kills: Robert sawing off a finger and Dagmer an ear, and Adeon taking the head of the largest beast (It was also tradition to hang a particularly fierce opponent’s head or other signifying body part on a mantle for respect).

Robert, elated at his experience among the Marked, felt a wave of confidence come over him that would emulate within him as he advanced through his youth. His explorations would become more daring and with less of a retinue accompanying him, and was excited to hear of the White Rose’s decision to conduct an exodus in favor of a new unconquered land. His excitement for the exodus was blindsided by an unforeseen tragedy, one that would hit him very hard and affect him throughout his journey to the new land of Aeldin. His father, Thomas Chivay, had succumbed to the sickness of gout. His death was sudden and without warning, and happened on the third day following the exodus. Robert, who had been on one of the first ships to leave, had not been able to see his father lay on his deathbed, and took to a melancholy mood that embittered him for the remainder of the journey. Oftentimes lashing out at the soldiers and sailors for no particular reason, Robert developed an amount of dread amongst the soldiers who once so highly loved him as an innocent child. Consoled by no one close to him – His mother and sister had stayed in Anthos for reasons unknown – and left with the regretful feeling of being absent during his father’s last moments, Robert was not an approachable person for the remainder of their seaward journey, developing a seasickness much like his father and remaining often in the lower cabins, screaming at whatever servant or passerby that happened to witness his illness.

Their arrival in Aeldin, however, seemed to brighten up his spirits a bit. Although certainly still embittered, he was finally able to reconvene with his friends that had been in command of the other ships. He was given condolences for his loss, but more importantly was now treated as a man in his own right, and as a result participated in the coming war councils. First landing in what would later be called the Heartlands, the Exodus were welcomed with an air of suspicion, but welcomed nonetheless. It was only after the discovery of the natives’ plans for treachery that the Exodus determined the hidden hostility amongst the Heartlander nations. Wasting no time, Emperor Horen called up Robert’s Uncle, King Peter Chivay of Kaedrin, to act as the Marshal for the coming Heartlander Campaign. Peter, an aging veteran of countless wars, appointed his heir, Castor, and Robert under his personal retinue, acting as their mentor and instructing them on the true arts of war. It was here that Robert learned about true stratagem and tactics. His tutoring gave him knowledge on paper, but this field experience allowed him to truly learn and thus excel as a commander. Together with his uncle and cousin, the three campaigned throughout the Heartlands, conquering their foes with relative ease, utilizing the heavy shock elements of a fully outfitted Orenic force. The only true setback of the campaign was the tragic death of Castor Chivay, the Crown Prince, at the Battle of Brundia. Under orders from Peter, Robert and Castor took control of the left cavalry wing and were instructed to flank the locked-in-combat enemy. Unknown to Peter, though, was the ambuscade positioned in an otherwise insignificant brush. Both Castor and Robert, leading from the front as they were always prone to do, were caught unaware by the sudden volley of arrows that hit their charging horse. Castor, whose horse was hit by an arrow, came tumbling down; the charging cavalry, with no chance to react, thus trampled the Crown Prince under several hundred hooves. Robert, witnessing his cousin’s death, fell into a frenzy, ordering the cavalry to charge headlong into the line instead of veering along to the flank. Taken completely by surprise (By this time the hammer and anvil strategy of Oren had been an accustomed but undefeatable tactic), the Heartlander center collapsed and broke their ranks, fleeing in all directions and being slaughtered by the surging cavalry. The infantry, specifically the White Rose, followed close behind, chasing the oblivious Heartlanders to their camp and capturing their baggage. It was a decisive victory, but the celebration was dimmed down with the news of the Prince’s death. Almost overcome with grief, Peter was saved from a saddened rage by an omen: During the battle, a camp follower whom the King had once fornicated with had come to the tent of the King to present to him his son, the result of their escapade. There was no doubt in the child’s father, but Peter at first refused to recognize the boy, all too caught up in the battle at hand. It was only after the news of Castor’s death that he called for the woman again. Presenting him once again with his child, Peter recognized him as his own, and named him a Sparrow of bastard blood. High Pontiff Lucien, who had been in attendance during the battle and this following encounter, had proclaimed the child to be an omen of the reincarnation of the soul of Peter’s son, brought back into this world by will of the Creator to continue the bidding of his father. It was then decided that the child would be named Castor, and treated as much a son as his first Castor ever was. But out of respect and gratitude to his nephew, he rejected Castor’s legitimacy, allowing the inheritance to fall to Robert instead, once Peter’s time had come. Deeply honored by this, Robert felt a great deal of duty entrusted to him, and would strive to live up to his uncle’s legacy, and uphold the virtue and valor of his now posthumous cousin.

After the Heartlander Campaigns, the newly christened Empire of Horos was created, and Peter was once again called to expand on her borders. Moving into the neighboring territory of Agathor, the Imperial Army (Now referred to as the Imperium Exercitus) marched with determination for conquest and subjugation. The Agathorians fought much like their Orenic counterparts: utilizing heavy shock tactics with a reliance on cavalry flanks. Robert, by now a seasoned veteran and proven commander, found himself now in command of greater portions of the army, with Peter fully trusting him either with a cohort or an entire infantry wing. By the time Robert aged to his twenties, he was a capable and efficient leader of men, and so Peter thought it time to instruct him now in the affairs of state. Appointing him both military prefect and governor of the province of Agathoria Superior, Robert soon learned the affairs of logistics within the army, overseeing baggage and supply routes, management of the local populace, and the maintenance and improvement of infrastructure.

It was in his thirty-first year that Robert was finally given a command of his own, without the guidance of his Uncle or other superior. Charged with twelve legions and a 4000 Agathorian cavalry, Robert set out into the country known as Banardia, to establish contact and subjugate the local tribes under the formal province of Banardia Inferior. It was a swift and decisive first few weeks, with every encounter resulting in an Imperial victory, but that was soon to change with the coming of the Banardian king known as Artan of Marienburg. Banardia, divided into two parts by a massive mountain pass known only as The Divide, was a land of constant warring, with both sides constantly maneuvering through the passes and fighting countless wars. It was certainly one of the most hostile places on the continent, and the Banardians were renowned for their expert knowledge of the landscape. When Artan invaded from across the Divide, he forced Robert to chase him back into the Divide, and dragged on a guerrilla war of immense proportion throughout the mountains. Robert, despite these setbacks, found his salvation in the Banardians on the eastern side of the Divide (Banardia Inferior). Fearing of Artan’s ambition to conquer all of Banardia (Both Magna Banardia and Banardia Inferior), they sought the protection of Robert, and thus provided him with the necessary provisions and pathfinders to make it through the otherwise treacherous mountain passes. With this added support, Robert quickly managed to cross the Divide and catch Artan unaware, routing his main force in a decisive battle, capturing the King and sending him back to the Heartlands as a trophy. The threat of the Banardian invasion was subsided, for the time, and the tribes in the east were grateful of the Empire’s help and most of them swore their loyalty and assistance. And so with the Empire satisfied with its new province and the threat of another Banardian incursion quelled, Robert returned to Agathoria Superior after stationing his legions to occupy the new province.

It was in Agathoria that Robert received word of the Emperor’s newest request. His Imperial Majesty, Owyn (Horen had died some years ago whilst Robert was on campaign) had decided to confer upon House Chivay the grant of independence, provided they make one promise to him: the revival and restoration of the once proud Empire of Oren, and when successful, carry on the legacy of House Chivay in the way it was deserved to be.  Accepting this without delay, Peter rallied an expedition of ships and men and began preparations for their return to Anthos. Robert was assigned first with the mustering of Agathorian corn and provisions, and then ordered to act as the vanguard for the expedition. Taking a small flotilla, he set out from the port of Laguria and headed east once again. Stopping only twice in East Aeldin for supplies in the cities of Marianiani and Justern, Robert made a headlong path for the continent in which he was born. His arrival could not have been at a worse time, though, and he witnessed firsthand the destruction of Anthos by cataclysmic storms and flooding. Escaping to the Fringe with his retinue, he discovered old friends who had stayed behind during the Exodus and found a great deal of supporters in his Uncle’s soon-to-be claim. He laid out the groundwork for his Uncle, now his only order was to await the man’s arrival.
