Bonus Dev Blog 3: The examination for Steward

Hello, and welcome to the third and final bonus blog to the Human 4.0 Dev Blog series! I'm Senda, the person in charge of the Oren construction team, and in today's edition we're going to take a sneak-peak at how one becomes a Steward.

On behalf of everyone involved, I can tell you that we are all incredibly excited to finally start lifting a few of the curtains that will, for the most part, continue to block and obscure the full view of 4.0, till the eventual release.

========================================================

The Examination for Steward

With the areas of responsibility mapped out, as well as the vision towards achieving those goals set in ink, one last thing remains, to ensure a set code of conduct. A minimum standard one can expect from what will from now on be: Stewards of Oren.

To ensure this standard, all prospective Stewards are required to pass an official Examination before being allowed to bear the title “Steward of Oren”.

The office of the Imperial Steward is responsible for 8 different tasks, as is outlined in this document:

When entering service with the Office, prospective Stewards are expected to be well-versed in the following:

  • Management of the Capitol of Oren.

Which, in essence, boils down to the bare knowledge of how the capital is run, how housing is handled and taxes expected to be paid.. and how to apply that knowledge to a conversation with a prospective citizen, while giving them the best possible service in the process.

To verify this, an applicant will present himself before a jury of cerified Stewards, assigned to this task by the Imperial Steward himself. Heading this jury will be the Steward with the longest service time.

The trial shall test the applicant through a variation of direct questions, as well as open-ended scenario's that the applicant is expected to have a full, step-by-step answer to resolve.

Neither the specific questions, nor the possible scenario's, are revealed to the applicant beforehand.

Assuming the applicant passes the Examination, he shall be inducted into the office as a certified Steward, at which point his service begins in the capital itself.

During his service, the newly inducted Steward has the option to broaden his scope by partaking in further examinations for the other tasks that Stewards can be expected to take on periodically:

  • Maintenance on all Roadworks in Oren.

  • Continued adherence to a set standard of construction in Oren.

  • Oversight on the distribution of vital supplies in Oren.

  • Management of the Imperial Treasury.

  • Organisation of quarterly events throughout Oren.

  • Yearly Realm-wide report on current state of the Empire.

The certificates for the above area's of expertise are only ever handed out by the Imperial Steward himself, on a case-by-case basis. They involve a far greater amount of preliminary fieldwork, including accompanying the Imperial Steward (or those he sends in his place) on missions pertaining to the field of interest, to allow the Steward with an ambition to learn.. a chance to see these actions (whom are more high-profile and run greater risks) being undertaken before being allowed to take them on himself.

All the above measures combined culminate in the final task that the Office of the Imperial Steward has taken on:

  • Training of future landholders using a competence-system.

Step by step, examination by examination, prospective applicants become certified Stewards.. and continue to attain competence in other fields of diplomatic management.

Upon being sent back to their original Noble house, with a fresh new applicant ready to take their place in the grand rotation, this system shall continue to spread the values of proper organisation, distribution and above all.. unity.. throughout the Empire of Oren.

A final note on conduct and public reflection:

Throughout their service, all Stewards are expected to retain a neutral standing towards all parts of Oren, regardless of their own background. Inter-house squabbling (or worse) is strictly forbidden, with any breaking of this rule met with an immediate removal from the office.

All Stewards adhere to a code of decent conduct during their service, in the knowledge that their public stature and actions reflect upon the Noble house they represent, even though they are expected to remain neutral in all things.

Applicants who fail to pass the examination return home in shame, with the respective houses' ability to properly educate their offspring suddenly in question.

Stewards who are certified, yet find themselves removed from the Office for misconduct (or worse) bring even greater shame upon themselves and their lineage, as most offences that will lead to their removal are also punishable in a court of Imperial Law.

Of course, the Office expects none of these measures to be needed, with each Noble house striving to outdo the other purely by setting a positive example of excellence.

Signed,

Joseph Lane

Imperial Steward
