Originally founded by Ser Roy “Uthor” Silverblade and named in honour of St Godfrey, the savior of mankind, the Knights of the Red Dragon was the overarching order that encompassed all knights within the empire. Commanded by the Grand Knight and divided into large scale Chapters, the Knights of the Red Dragon were the pride of the Empire, defending the weak and innocent with honour and upholding a code of chivalry, to which they were bound.

Over generations, the knights fell into disarray, some even bringing disgrace and shame to their houses and their country. Many, however, stayed true to the core beliefs of knighthood and held their position with integrity and honour. The time has come again for all the knights of the realm to come together and become a beacon of justice and an example of chivalry once more. Under the Noble Ser Maric II Varodyr, the Red Dragon will once again fly high and bring honour and glory to the Empire.

Knight Commander

The title of Knight Commander is the highest rank a Knight can achieve within the Empire. The Knight Commander is the head of the Order of the Red Dragon and will occasionally issue directions to the heads of Chapters. He has total command of all unaffiliated knights and is granted the Grand Knight’s position on the Emperor’s Privy council. He is in charge of both promotions and demotions, given the power to grant knighthoods to Knight Errants. They are the chiefest example of honour and chivalry and are the epitome of goodness. They are referred to with the title of Noble Ser.

Current: Maric II Varodyr the Winged Knight (Red Dragon)

Knight Captain

The Knight Captain is a very prestigious and high ranking senior knight position. There are only ever as many Knight Captains as there are Knight Chapters, with the head of each chapter being granted the title (with the exception of the Red Dragon). They have the power to full command over every knight within their chapter, during peace and war time and are expected to ensure that their knights uphold the code and stay true to their oaths. Knight Captains are referred to as Great Sers.

Current: Thomas Delaney the Bold (Griffon), Artikus Silverblade the Fierce (Red Dragon)

Knight Sergeant

Knight Sergeants are colloquially known as senior knights, having garnered a lot of experience under their belt and proved themselves as shining examples of heroism and chivalry in the Empire. Knight Sergeants have the power to take command of a band of Knights within their own Chapter in the absence/command of a Knight Captain or Knight Commander. Knight Sergeants are senior knights and thus referred to as Great Ser. Chapter sworn knights sergeants now take on a knightly title.

Current: Joseph Ocran the Old (Griffon), Gawain Owynswood, Owyn's Flame (Griffon), Vulpes Roke  the Innocent (Red Dragon), Uthor Silverblade the Steadfast (Red Red Dragon)

Knight

Knights of Oren have ascended to full knighthood, having gone through their ceremony and said their vows, swearing their lives to the Knight’s Code and the Empire. They are an example to the Empire and by extension the world, of upstanding and honourable men. In times of war, Knights of the Red Dragon form under the command of the Knight Commander into a cavalry and ride into glorious battle, to bring honour to their Empire. Knights are referred to as Ser and take on a knightly title that best represents them. (Chapter-sworn knights are exempt.)

Knight Errant

Knight Errants have recently graduated from being a squire, having paid their dues and learnt all they can learn about what it means to be a Knight. Now released into the world as Knight Errants, they await their moment of opportunity and heroism, to prove their skill and that they are indeed worthy of carrying the prestigious title of Knight of Oren. Chapters are able to promote squires to Knight Errant themselves. They carry the title of Ser, regardless and are still expected to adhere strictly to the Knight’s Code.

Squire

Squires are very young prospective knights-in-training, bound to a Knight as a squire, they are expected to take in all the knowledge the Knight can pass on. They are to repay their Knight’s kindness by assisting him with his armor, accompanying him on errands and in Tourneys, as well as any other task the Knight sees fit. Between the ages of 16-18, the squire may graduate to the rank of Knight Errant and begin their journey to knighthood. A squire will take on the colours of their Knight until they are Knighted.

As a Squire, it is your duty to gain the coat of arms that your Knight wears, if your Knight is a Knight Errant, then you must take the coat of arms of their Liege Lord (or Order) until that Knight Errant is granted full knighthood.

As a knight, not belonging to a separate chapter, you are expected to take the colours and coat of arms of your own house, not a house you serve. You are to wear this on a tabard or sash with pride and honor, in order to bring glory to your house. (Chapter-sworn knights are exempt from this and are expected to take the colours of their order)

As a Knight Errant you are expected to take the colours of the order you serve. If you are a Knight Errant, not belonging to a chapter and are sworn to a Liege Lord, you are to take their colours as your own and represent them, until you are granted full knighthood. Hedge Knights are not to take the colours of their Liege and are to take the colours of the Red Dragon. (Chapter-sworn knights are exempt from this and are expected to take the colours of their order)

There are two ways to join the ranks of the Knights of Oren. The most common and well known way being squiring, the other being granted knighthood by the Emperor himself and the Emperor alone.

A child, between the ages of 6-11 may be taken under the wing of a knight and squired, being taught everything from philosophy, etiquette, combat and everything it takes to become the perfect knight. The squire, in return, is expected to perform many tasks in service to their knight, things such as armor and weapon maintenance, horse care, cleaning knight’s sleeping quarters, along with almost anything else their knights require.

It is far easier for a noble child to be squired, than a commoner, however many knights have come from common families. To apply to become a squire, fill out the form below and submit it to the Knight’s Citadel in Petrus.

When a squire reaches the ages of 16-18, it will be decided by his knight if he is ready to move on and become a Knight Errant, if he has truly learnt what it means to be a knight. At this stage, there will be a small ceremony and the Knight Errant will be made to don a new tabard, not yet a tabard of his own but a tabard of those he serves (his order or his liege lord).

Knight Errants are most typically House Knights or Hedge Knights, seeking their opportunity to prove their worth in sight of the Empire and God himself, to show heroism and honour so that they may be granted full knighthood by Knight Commander.

Even without full knighthood, however, these Knight Errants are expected to strictly adhere to the Knights Code of Chivalry.

When a man becomes a knight, he swears by an oath that will bind him until the end of his days. The oath that every knight must take, is identical to the code they are taught as children, thus tying their lives to the words they are so familiar with.

-----

I shall live by honour, for glory and guard the honour of my fellow knights.

Honour The Creator and maintain His Church.

Keep the faith and act in righteousness.

I shall serve my Liege lord valorously and with conviction,

And persevere to the end in any enterprise begun and never turn my back upon an equal foe.

I shall refrain from the wanton giving of offence and despise pecuniary reward.

Give succour to widows and orphans and regard the honor of women.
I shall offer that which is not needed to those who are needy,

And safeguard the helpless and uphold the weak.

I shall respect those placed in authority but fight for the welfare of all.

Abstain from injustice, cruelty and deceit.

I will be vigilant and show courage even in the face of evil.

Resolve not with swords what can be with words.

And at all times speak the truth even if faced with death.

In my blood The Creator’s will shall be written.

Upon my life and honour, I swear it.

Otherwise referred to as the Knights of Oren or the Knights of the Realm, the knights belonging to this chapter are among the more veteran and experienced of knights, many of whom have served the Empire and it's ever changing monarchy for generations, with valour and honour. Each and every knight takes their own colours and coat of arms, to better represent themselves, their houses and by extension, the Empire.

They are beacons of chivalry and goodness in an otherwise dark and troublesome time.

Amid a quiet and peaceful evening in Oren, loud voices could be overheard from within the Imperial Palace of Petrus. There within, Emperor Tuvya Carrion I stood upright, before his youngest son, Yakov, as the young Prince knelt down at his feet. In a private ceremony, Yakov was finally to ascend as a Knight of the Order of the Red Dragon, after having served dutifully at the side of the Grand Knight, Ser Maric, for some years. Looking down upon his son's forehead, Tuvya continued his speech. "Homage of yours is honourable, and your deed just, for such in eyes of Godani and in name of my own." Unsheathing a large razor-edged blade, the Emperor laid it on Yakov's right shoulder. "I shall dub thee Ser Yakov the Unyielding... To Uphold your sacred duties as Knight; to be granted all such privileges as my own sworn Knight." Then laying the blade on his son's left shoulder, he continued. "And to adhere to the Chivalric Code and to always speak the truth."

lord_by_dandzialf-d4b2usa.jpg

After a brief pause, Yakov went on to recite the Knight's Code. "Knight shall live by honour, for glory, and guard honour of fellow Knights. Honour creator and maintain his Church. Keep faith and act in righteousness. Serve liege Lord valorously and with conviction. Persevere to end in any enterprise begun and never turn back upon equal foe. Knight shall refrain from wanton giving of offence and despise pecuniary reward. Give succour to widows and orphans and regard honor of women. Shall offer that which not needed, to those who are needy. And safeguard helpless and uphold weak. Knight shall respect those placed in authority but fight for welfare of all. Abstain from injustice, cruelty and deceit. Shall be vigilant and show courage, even in face of evil. Resolve not with swords what can be with words. And at all times speak truth, even if faced with death. In their blood creator’s will shall be written."

Nodding his head, Tuvya gave a smile, turning the handle of the blade towards Yakov. "Arise Ser Yakov. Take blade of mine as gift of your post." Yakov arose, taking the pommel of the blade from Tuvya. Balancing it in front of him, he gazed along both its sides, twisting his wrist towards him, as it reflected in the gaze of the candle light. "Is fine blade, papa. Shall see blood in time, am sure." Placing a hand upon Yakov's shoulder, Tuvya gave a solemn nod of his head. "Da, in time son." Meanwhile outside of the palace, the banners of House Carrion flew high in the wind above the walls of Petrus, as the gentle patter of rain fell steadily upon the city below.
