And I'm new to the whole rping thing in general, sorry For mining there is a mining world which you can find at many places in the map including the temple. To build join a settlement or nation. Most nations have houses you can buy/rent with minas which you can make easily from voting or setting up a shop/selling on the road. You can also make friends and find a plot for you to settle on your own! As for roleplaying, do not do what you would do IRL. Do what the character you created would do, make sure you Roleplay your race correctly and you should be fine. Good luck on LOTC!, if you need any help feel free to PM a AP Team/GM or meh.
