Deputy's Notice: Borrowers And Thieves

 Share

Recommended Posts

Deputy Bodo stands tiptoe on a quant mahogany footstool, outstretching his cuffed arms to pin up a message on the town noticeboard.

FOLK OF GIMBLEWOOD:

It comes with a heavy heart that I must write this message, but this message must be said, so I suppose my heart must be heavy. I have noticed a terrible habit growing amongst the town!

We, as Halflings, commonly borrow from each other - that's the way it has always been, and the way it always will be. But I fear some of us have forgotten what borrowing means.

Two words, cut from Dingle Dogfoot's Dictionary for the Dale, are pasted on the deputy's notice.

Borrowing: Taking what is needed (not large amounts, mind you!) from a friend, with the intent to repay later. Note: not repaying at some point is stealing! A Halfling never steals from a Halfling!

Thieving: Taking often unneeded and unnecessarily large amounts of items and never repaying. This is a scoundrel's act!

The deputy's note continues on:

Townsfolk, be borrowers, not thieves! Storage chests have been emptied as of late, a town cannot run when its residents are taking too much of its resources. Take what is needed, and leave the rest, do not be selfish, be temperate. If you should take from the storage chests, help to refill them.

If I should catch any of you thieving, you have been warned: if it's a severe stealing, you may lose your burrow. In minor cases, I will dump water in your fireplace on cold nights!

Please report any thievery to the sheriff or deputy. And remember, be a borrower and not a brigand!

-Deputy Bodo Hollowmead
