A Change Paved In Emerald

The dark room stands illuminated solely by a dimly lit candle, the light shaky and dull as it burns down toward its end. Upon the floor sat a lone figure, clad in worn steel plate, two sheathed blades laying upon the stone behind him.

The man's eyes remain closed, his legs crossed beneath him. His expression is contemplative, resting within an unchanging state as his mind focuses on matters beyond his simple worldly experience. Yet throughout his silent session of prayer, the Paladin's mind was repeatedly pulled to a single image.

With each reminder, the Paladin would stir, the importance of this gaze rousing him from his contemplative state. Such an occurrence had not happened to the diligent servant for decades, yet now it was as if the man had returned to his untamed youth. Pressing his eyes tighter, he could not withstand the flashes of color that wracked his mind's eye.

Yet was this truly so bad? Though the image tugged at the Paladin's every thought, it did not distract him. As he tried to focus, he found that the vision could not be dispelled, but also that the simple distraction was not absolute. Though it commanded his attention, such was not deviant from Xan's path.

It is the Patron who empowers his students, but only through their will can such be achieved. Though this figure had changed, his will had not. He was Xan's Paladin, and thus the mist came to him as it had every time before.

--

Within the Paladin's mind, an image flashed time and time again. The green eyes flickered upon dark silhouette, tearing back at him through the abyssal space of his thoughts.

As time passed, his vision would slowly grow to be overcome by green, obscuring the golden clarity that typically captured his internal vision in prayer. The Paladin's breathing would grow heavy and loud in comparison to what was typical, sweat slowly collecting upon his brow. Finally, he would give way, his eyes opening to separate himself from prayer.

Yet the human did not escape from the green gaze of these eyes. They had burnt into his imagination, his every thought, and sewed their way into his actions. For about the Paladin, inconsistent with every past occurrence, the mist cast about him shimmered in emerald.

With this, the Paladin realized he had not been led astray. Her emerald eyes, impossible to expel from his mind, were not to depart. They were a part of him and his service to his Patron.

He had not faltered. His path was resolute. It was now merely paved in green rather than gold, for her eyes could not escape his thoughts.

Garion winks at Dain. He should feel this way. He really should.
