Art of the Vehement

The Art of the Vehement, otherwise classified as close-quarters-combat, is a stylization of weaponless combat in which the target is subjected to an often-unexpected flurry of attacks based on dexterity, speed and the intention to disable. The art does not act as a lethal force - being treated instead as a militant technique in which the enemy is grappled and often subdued via either the trauma of these swift attacks, or the grappling itself.

Primarily, the technique depends on surprising the target -- to take advantage of immediate shock in order to make use of the openings that comes of it so they may be subdued as quick as possible. However, it also functions well as a defensive mechanism for singular subjects, whereas for several it only poses as an act of futility. The focus of the art is to apply its techniques upon singular foes, with several others only applicable if they, too, are surprised by the wielder. The only true way that close quarters combat may be utilized against many attentative foes is if nearly the same number of men match their opposition count.

Since it doesn’t rely on lethal technique, the art consists of attacks that fall in line with swift strikes, grappling, twisting or tripping of the arms of legs (to disable them, primarily), and disarming the opponent of their weapons, of which the most easiest falls in line with heavier armaments and common ones, such as greatswords, longswords, axes, and daggers. Applying a chokehold to the enemy is also a method used to subdue them, if forcing them into a breathless sleep is what the mission demands of the user.

Another aspect of the Art of the Vehement is the mock-use of weaponry-- to make the enemy hesitate by making them believe an attack is either about to be made upon them, or upon an ally whom the art user holds as hostage. This lures them and makes them tense- allowing the user to mold the situation to their advantage by taking the enemy by surprise via grapples and swift disarms.

There lies three tenants that had been written by the technique’s maker - Raide of Ashford - that tie into the mission of the Vehement Lord, the patron of purity that the adherent follows and serves to praise God through its holy mission:

i. Patience

The artist is to remain calm throughout the scene of conflict, knowing that greater passion and fury may lead to mistakes and regrettable actions. The artist is to understand that the key to observing the enemy is to do so with a clear mind, unhampered by panic and any tense nature that would lead to suspecting unrealistic possibilities from the opponent, or fears to make the artist’s own actions hesitant.

ii. Cunning

The artist must observe and understand the way of the opponent in order to truly gain footing against them. Each movements must register as an action as calculated as one's own, and thus envisioned, expected, and regarded with a counter-strategy. The skills, posture, and offensive preferences must be filed into these stratagems, of which must alter constantly to keep up with the dynamism of battle.

iii. Honor

The artist must regard their enemy as their battlefield brother; to seek victory over them, yet to seek it mercifully. To combat them, yet combat them with nary a trick or a ruse. To subdue them, and not to kill, for the Vehement Way calls for the bitter mercy of all sinners, dark to darkest. Death acts as final repentance, and it shall not be the Art of the Vehement to deliver it.

The following is to exemplify the Art of the Vehement in action:

Knight Aster lingers at the ready with longsword in hand before his enemy; the adherent Raide. He makes slow approach, weapon poised to thrust forward in a stab.

Adherent Raide slowly circles his opponent, tense and calm as he watches his movements. Overtime, the circling begins to narrow down; he approaching Aster, as Aster approaches he.

Knight Aster suddenly jolts forward to issue his expected strike, yet instead twists his hand to swing the sword down in a strong arc; aimed upon Raide’s shoulder.

Adherent Raide makes use of his lighter form, quickly twisting to the side to evade the evaluated attack-- moving further toward Aster in the next moment to take hold of his arm and deftly apply a twist to it to enwreath it with pain.

Knight Aster contorts in bewilderment as his sword-arm is accosted, struggling to pull away even as the immediate agony cripples the chance to escape from Raide. His other gauntlet raises to strike at the man in retaliation.

Adherent Raide grimaces as he pulls back further; evading another strike still as he presses Aster’s twisted arm against the knight’s back. He then steps forward again, swinging his left leg to collide against the back of Aster’s right, all the while pushing against his right shoulder in order to ultimately thrown him onto his backside.

Knight Aster exudes a tepid, pained groan as the flurry directed upon him eludes his senses and dulls his means to defend himself- collapsing onto his backside after his arm was released for the fall. He lies there, disoriented, absent, and defeated.

[ This acts as a privatized technique - only learned as apart of the Covenant of the Vehement Lord. ]

Is there really need to write lore on this and make it so privatized? Its pretty simply martial arts, not to mention power gameable.

I've seen stuff written for martial art forms before, so tossing this out to see what people think didn't seem too bad; and you can only go so far with this until it just gets ridiculous, just like everything else. It's not some superpower, just a method of combat.

I only had to write mine because combat RP was weird back then xD, it was a really nice read though I think the detailing could use 'more common' words. A lot of the 'fluff' words like:

enwreath, accosted, things of that sort just seem to bog down the flow of martial combat. Then again if this was advance lit forum roleplay post then it'd be stunning to employ. The second thing with this martial arts is assuming a lot of the 'combat' rp is done with someone who is willing to go through. So many moments as I was reading this I can see someone replying 'dodges' 'moves'.

However if done to someone who is willing to go with the flow I'd think this style would be awesome to see in-game :O

The issue with any type of combat is that both parties need to understand /exactly/ what is going on for the fight to work out. Unfortunately, not many people know about unarmed combat. Either way, I like this nifty little piece of writing! Good job!
