"A Phoenix Withers, A Ship Sails"

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Phoenix Empress Rei Saefang  rested her hand on the railing of "Phoenix Tail", looking out over the bay and at her city. Seaside at been her family's seat of power for hundreds of years, but now it had been defiled by ghosts, ghouls, and poltergeists. Smoke rose from temples, townhouses were completely toppled, and even their iron gates had been bent by black magic and necromancy. Looking over her shoulder, the other ships were being loaded up with the people of the Chiyoko Empire. She had ordered a complete detachment from their homeland, to save them from any further grief and destruction. On her own ship, men were loading crates and chests with food, minerals, and other resources that they might use in this new realm they were headed for, "Vailor". Months earlier, she had said her heir, Minako, to work as ambassador and see out her people's salvation. A week before last, her daughter had written back telling of her success, combined with the ambassadors of the Xian and Hatamoto, in securing land with the Farfolk, one of they many human cultures of this new land. Empress Rei cried that day, out of pride for her daughter, happiness for her people, and grief that leaving her homeland was now inevitable.

After the call was made to set sail, Rei went below deck to shelter in her cabin. She had her maid fix some hot tea and sat down to read  book, a tome about Vailor that her daughter had sent with a courier. As she began to open the cover, she began to cough violently. As her maid went to help her, the old Empress waved her off and asked her to fetch her a few blankets to warm her. When the girl left, Empress Rei studied the first page on which she had coughed on and shook her head. Drops of blood scattered about the page, some spots larger than others. Empress Rei shuddered, closed the book, and tapped her finger upon it's leather cover. The girl returned with the blankets, and Rei asked for a parchment and quill. "What are you writing, m'lady? Do I need to fetch a bird?" The young maid looked at her with large eyes, ready to serve her Empress at any point. "No, my dear. I need...to write something that come to much importance soon, I think." Empress Rei nodded to herself, sent the girl off, and drifted off to sleep after signing the letter.

The next day, the maid returned to find her Empress had died. Upon the desk before her body lay a unrolled parchment, which only need be sealed and given to it's recipient. It was the Old Empress's will, and within it was written:

To my subjects, my lords, and my family,

I am to die. I am to die of this illness that has plagued me for so long, but now is the time that I wrote my will and named my successor. My daughter, Crown Princess Minako of the Saefang Dynasty, shall follow me as leader of the Chiyaki and assume whatever title she obtains in this new realm. I leave my wealth and people in her hands, and hope she guides them as I know she will. I wish her the very best, and wish upon my people lifelong happiness and prosperity in their new lives.

Signed.

Rei Saefang of the Saefang Dynasty,

Phoenix Empress of the Chiyoko Empire, Lady of The Fiyori Order, and Protector of The Chiyaki

(OOC:)

I made this little short story/letter as a lead in for the Chiyaki in the new realm coming up. Their Empress is dead and now her daughter, my persona, can fully assume leadership. I haven't written a short story in a while, so do leave comments about what you think. Thanks! ^__^
