Changes to Self-Teaching Magic

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hello!

For the past few weeks, we've noticed a fair degree of feedback based around the current process of magic self-teaching. After the review of said feedback, as well as a good deal of internal discussion, the Magic Team has come to a decision regarding the change of Self teaching.

In order to self-teach a magic on the self-teachable list, your character must already be proficient in a magic of the same archetype. For example, in order to self-teach fire evocation, you must already know another magic in its archetype, such as water evocation.

Now, with this change in place, I would like to mention that we're still going to be tweaking and adjusting it. Feel free to post any ideas to improve the system as a comment or a feedback thread, both will be checked. Also, note that players who have already been accepted for self-teaching a magic will be permitted to continue doing so.

I know the answer is no, but if your character knew communion, could they self teach natures healing?

Hopefully this will dull the endless shitstorm of t1 wizards who don't know how to rp...

This only applies to magics that are currently self-teachable, listed in the Magic Applications subforum.

What about telekenisis? Were I to be wanting to learn this, what would you need to know beforehand?

This change seems like a good compromise.

It still baffles me that this decision would be made. This change makes it far more difficult for those without OOC connections to magic users to learn magic, something that is a problem the MAT won't recognize because they will never have to face it. They are deeply ingrained in these OOC connections. The idea that this is favorable to spending ten minutes when someone applies with a self-taught app to OOCly explains the ins and outs of the magic is unjustifiable and super unwelcoming.

The responses to this thread should serve as evidence enough to why this change is absurd and completely contradicts the point of self-teaching.

Don't worry, the system is still being worked on. The thing that we discussed previously is currently being ironed out and I'm hoping will be implemented sometime soon once it's been discussed.

Although if it somehow doesn't come to fruition, feel free to raise some hell and I'll join in.

I know this was already decided, but the discussion post was way too intimidating for me to say anything.

I honestly feel like self-teaching should be appropriate, provided you have an OOC 'mentor' person to ask questions and make sure you're actually RP'ing correctly... Which would pretty much be a normal MA, but purely OOC.

Wait that's dumb...

Now, it will be even more difficult to learn magic! My teachers hardly teach me lessons, and I am completely at their mercy, forced to beg for lessons from them (the last time I had a telekinesis lesson was about 3 weeks ago, and that was only to connect to the void). My teacher won't even respond to my numerous attempts to contact them, and will not give me lessons in this art. I was going to just self teach myself, so I wouldn't have to deal with this frustration. But now? You must already know a magic in that archetype? This means I will not even be able to progress further in my magic I am learning for a very long time, considering my lack of teaching.

You can report shitty teachers and the system is still being tweaked as said at the bottom of the post. I'll PM you over skype to get more details.
