The End Of The World

uk.jpg

The year is 475AD and the Western Roman Empire is falling apart. Civil disobedience, the rise of riots, famine, war exhaustion, and a new spreading plague beats on a splintering empire. Emperor Romulus Augustulus has been battling the Gaulic leader Odoacer at the Rhine River for several months. Word spreads throughout the empire that Romulus is dead and that Odoacer has a clear path to Rome. Several tribes within the roman provinces in England begin further questioning foreigner rule. Banding together, families become tribes, tribes becoming villages and armies. With the civilized world ending, what will you do to stand the test of time?

Summer is Here

The people rise from their homes. Their hoes in hand and yawns escaping their mouths. Troops finish marching out of roman Britannia. This was it, the end of the civilized world. Pockets of roman culture dot the map as governors refuse to give up their villas and way of life. Once roman allied tribes begin gathering arms in ready for protection and raiding. Peace giving way to violence. Word of widespread chaos is heard about caused by the northern Picts following behind the retreating roman forces. Raiding on the sandy shores of Britannia begins to rise, causing many leaders to fear these new forces plaguing the collapsing empire.

:EVENT:

Peace for 2 rounds in Britannia as roman troops head out; Legion groups VI Ceria and VIII Gemesa lead by ex-Praetor Teraxius Hermius

Large amounts of roman population head out of the province

Raiding caused by outside forces, destroys any war vessels

Loyalty is increased for 3 rounds as people look to their leaders for guidance

Contact is decreased to only touching tiles; civilizations with roads can establish contact to tiles an additional tile space away

The Emperor’s grand nephew Scorion Aprilius leads 2 cohorts north, halting the barbaric onslaught brought by the Picts… for a time.

The Embran Tribe

Word has it that the Romans were still attempting to hold back the Pict's advances and allowing the remaining loyal roman citizens and people to flee, using the time given by the Roman Legions up north the king would begin to send out instructions to the villages and to the Capital he resides in. The Army(warband?) would mainly hold ground in the capital while two smaller groups of Britonian warriors would move to garrison the other two villages. The Capital would be the larger of the two villages, a large wooden holding to house the King and his family with many houses surrounding the 'town hall' while outside that large farms(lvl1 farm) would be, of course the smaller villages have farms as well but more would be in the Capital as more villagers would be there. The capital would have a grip on the nearby iron mine and would have instructed the villagers who weren't farming to mine the iron inside while also expanding the new mine to search for anything else of value.

Summary of summer turn:

~ Mining begins in the nearby iron mines and soon an order would be to erect a proper guard post to make sure the mines were protected.

~ In the Capital a new expansion is ordered to be made for the sole purpose of training the warriors and perfect their skills in combat(Warriors able to live in homes I think at this point in the time period)

~ Scouts would be sent first in the country side then in the surrounding counties to look for anything of interest before reporting back.

~ A proper market would begin construction in the capital.

Warchief Lukiir stands outside his village looking out over the seemingly endless water a moment before turning to his counsel of clan leaders

"Today we stand Independent of the Romans willing and able to defend ourselves and our gods. Tomorrow I hope to learn from the Romans to further our own ends, Lets hope we only meet them several times if at all." One of the Clan heads would speak up

"Why not take the fight to them They are weaker now than ever?"

"Because fool we don't need the armies that passed through to the north to decide we are the larger threat and turn around and come for us."

at that the clan leaders quieted until one spoke up "So what now Warchief?"

"We survive."

-Embran Tribe-

The summer harvest comes in, most of it fueling the workers in the mines. This is the report that Yarvon would read. A frown touches his face. An advisor suddenly rushes into the tent. Handing Yarvon a scroll detailing more information.

Iron begins to be extracted from the mine, as many inhabitants wish for a weapon in their hand to fend off the northern hordes.

Construction of the guard post is only partially erected as the men of the area work the mine it is to protect. (1 AC)

Several hundred men sign up to learn how to wield a sword, untrained and with many in backgrounds in farming, most are ignorant beyond simple hacks and slashes. (2AC)

The scouts would report back several thousand people leaving on boats from a large burning city named Iceni. Chaos seems to have erupted in the city after much of the guard force was commanded to leave. Only a few thousand people remain in the city, most of them romans, waiting for more boats.

A market place is constructed, several men and women weave in and out of simple stalls, buying many products the merchants sell. With the untaxed and unregulated market constructed, some buy herbs from druids further north. The men after consuming a bit of it, seem to calm down drastically. (1AC to figure out more)

-Northern Romani Republic-

Commander Burilius Gimanis, once stationed in Gaul, sits at the table with the map of once roman Britannia, across from Vibius Julius. “Sir, we must establish a proper military. We only have a small city guard force. The people look for a larger protection force, they must know we can keep their lives intact.”

Iron begins to be collected from the mine and shipped to government ran smiths to be turned into weapons and armor. (2AC for heavy segmentata)

Patrols of levy city guard, barely trained and few in number, would begin circulating inside and outside the mine. Watching over the horizon for any sign of danger, the guards would only see people in the distance heading south.

Wood being plentiful, but roughly a mile from the gates, trains of civilians would march back and forth from the city. Dropping off lumber and collecting a small amount of denarii for each log they carry in.

Taxes are collected from the local population allowing for the government to pay for its expenditures. Half of the collected taxes are used to pay for the iron and wood.

Increased talks of forming a separate military from the city guard travels between political leaders outside of Vibius’ inner circle.

Happiness and faith in the government leads to people offering flowers and stick dolls at Vibius’ villa.

-The Crimson Hawk Tribe-

The clan leaders slam their stroke their beards nodding at Lukiir’s words. Wise words from a wise chief. One of the druids rises from the clan council, often referred to as Arden of the Crows. His hands tremble as they grip an old branch staff, on which a crow skull rests. “I… Have seen…” The tent goes quiet as the old man speaks. “The.... Prophecy…” Hunching over quickly, the druid begins to cough. Several tribesmen help the druid leave the tent. Age has over come the man.

Hundreds of able bodied men leave their homes, carrying bows and sharpened spears. Marching through the forests in small hunting groups, many capture, skin, and harvest large beasts. Deer, elk, rabbits, rats, and even bears are carried back to the village, ready for preservation or a large feast.

Women and men hand each other words of insight as they fish using new contraptions. The abundance of fish seems to help the new idea as the capture rate of the fish increase. With the large supply of fish, preservation or feasting is necessary to prevent the fish from going to waste.

-The Kingdom of Progressionia-

Some of the fleeing population of the north with Britonian roots have seeked refuge in the city.

The scouts report: Much of the population has left, caravans of only a few dozen people are left in sight. Small bands of routing romans and Picts pass through your boarder.

Tribe leaders command their tribesmen to pick up their ancestral weapons and head into the forest to learn the skills of combat from the elderly druids. Though pacified by roman influence, the men begin to tap back into their native Britonian roots.

The construction of a simple wooden theater begins. Anticipation for the new attraction rises. (2AC)

Iron begins to be sapped from the mines and used by metallurgist to create hand axes and spears for the growing warrior population.

Embran Tribe

Yarvon would overlook the reports and information before running a hand through his beard quietly thinking before he gets up from his desk and goes to consult his council members on a few of the matters. A few hours would pass before the meeting would adjourn and all would leave to do as they were asked, The member who would be assigned to the Tribes military matters would move off to the small but needed army to begin training them in the basics of combat, trying to teach them basic tactics and organize them into a proper army instead of a mob of warriors. Next Yarvon would walk with another council member(Steward(?)) to talk about the market and the mines and how they would improve both of them, of course work would continue to be placed into the guard post watching over the mines but the Market would be a new matter and soon they would come to a conclusion that the market would have to be organized and taxed/regulated. A law would be passed and some of the profits the merchants would earn would go to the tribes coffers to fund future expenses, the Market itself would be made more organized and some guards would patrol it to make sure nothing went wrong inside the market itself. The next matter would fall upon the fleeing Romans and how to handle them before it is settled that the city would be watched and anyone that was left after everyone had fled would be consulted and asked if they would like to join the growing tribe.

~Actions~

- Organizing and Training of the growing army would begin while recruitment begins to be pushed, aiming for a goal of about 800 warriors.

- Organization of the Market and a proper system put in place, a small tax being placed on goods so the coffers would gain some revenue from the for now small market

- A proper forgery would be put under construction to make more weapons for the military.

- The construction of a proper holding for Yarvon and his family would begin, large enough to house his family and a small wing for the council meetings.

Vibius Julius looks to Commander Brulius "It is Council I shall take heed to immediately." glances over his papers before him "I'll leave it to you Commander Gemanis. I give you full authority to draft an army capable of defending this city, 1,000 Men should do for now. Until their training is complete we'll have to rely on the City Watch. However, I feel that our people will need more then just capable warriors to quell their fears of the natural world.." he holds up his silver cross necklace "We must quell the fears and worries of the spirit..The wood we've been bringing is for several projects me and my advisers have planned to be underway, I personally shall give priority to the construction of a proper Church for our Lord." He would stand from the table and march across the room "Amulius" he calls to his aid "Wake up Senator Gauis, We must convene immediately to discuss the city projects."

The town is full of excitement, laborers and workers move throughout the streets as buildings are being constructed and expanded. Local Labor Guilds have been working on expanding the cities resource pools in hopes of profit. Stone will be an invaluable resource to expand the city proper.

The Kingdom of Progressionia

"Your Highness, you requested me?" asked Marshal and Military Consultant Tyn who was of both Roman and Britonian descent and well versed in the art of warfare, as he entered King Hadok's finely decorated room.

"Yes, Marshal I need you to train our new warriors to the best ability, in the fighting art style that such an experienced fighter as yourself would know. As you know, the Picts of the north are constantly pushing down south and they are not to be meddled with so I require our army to be the extremely efficient, thank you." replied Hadok.

"Yes Your Highness, at once. I believe this to be a wise decision indeed." Tyn would leave to execute his orders at once.

King Hadok would also hold yet another counsel on what should be done next, and it was soon agreed that a market should be installed along with some market regulations to make sure everything is put to order.

:Third Event:

Winter begins to settle in and the crops cease to grow for a time. Trees lose their leaves and the snow up north piles high as the south of Britannia must deal with hail and freezing winds. Those who adventure to far out now may not be able to return. Much of the fleeing population has left for assumed roman Gaul. Rumors of battles occur less and less as eye witnesses decrease. Horses are slaughtered and wagons broken to make food and fire for the migrants still on the pathways out of Britannia. Winter raids on the east coast begin to occur taking the lives of anyone foolish enough to be outside a city’s watchful eye. Now it is winter, now we must wait.

-The Embran Tribe-

Using the extra money from the new tax on the market place, men of several poor clans form into small groups and join into the growing warband.

The taxes are collected from the marketplace but many feel resentment. They had not been taxed before and were uneasy with this sudden denial of hard earned money.

Several forges made of wood and partial clay would be set up around the town as little planning has gone into their design and construction.

Wood that would have gone to building the guard post at the mine is now diverted to building a wooden holding for Yarvon and his family. Construction would take time as there is little to no wood in stockpile. (2AC)

Any information that could have been gleaned about the new herb is slowly ending as people feel themselves regulated too much. (2AC to figure out, will end next turn)

Kingdom of the Belgiae

Image result for Celtic city

Augustiae, current seat of power of the Kingdom.

The Belgiae had emerged from the claws of roman tyranny, yet, as much as they hate to admit it, they became much more roman. Augustiae as the Belgiae called it was a small city by roman standards, yet it was the beating heart of the kingdom, built on coastal trade and farmings, with rich ores coming from Brecwm it supplemented Augustiae’s position.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brennus woke up from a strange dream, his wife by his side. He took a few breaths, his breath making a cloud in front of him. He got up, stretching. He looked through the window and saw a snowy Augustiae. He looked back at his bedside, his wife shuffled slightly as he had left the bed. He called a few servants and got dressed. He dressed in a mixture of roman and celtic dress. Incorporating pelts with the rich silks of his old roman patrons. He made his way through the old forum which now served as his palace. Several courtiers bowed their head to their Rex as he made his way to the now council chambers of his kingdom. There stood many chieftains, some more celtic than others, and in the middle stood the Bishop. They all bowed their heads to the King, and Brennus, out of courtesy bowed his head to his chiefs and bishop.

“Right, what is there to be discussed then?” The king asked, a certain monotony in his voice as he’s asked this question plenty of times.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The king knows the importance of good food stocks, thus he orders many acres of forest to be chopped down in the two main cities. Augustiae and Brecwm to make space for farmland. (3 actions points).

Brennus orders the chief of Brecwm, the father of his wife, to keep the mine workers, working, till the feast of nativity, so that the iron productivity will remain the same through the season. With this surplus of iron several ships would be sent to the land of the Gauls in an attempt to trade Iron to them. (3 action points).

NORTHERN ROMANI REPUBIC

856179-banner-flags-leather-red-backgrou

New Roma was covered in sheets of snow, the freezing wind howling throughout the city. Many of its residents are either inside their warm homes keeping out of the cold with the stocks of wood for fires. The city produced more then enough food to last through this winter. Construction has halted and nearly all activity has ceased, aside from a mass of people standing outside Vibius's villa. Nearly all the City's soldiers stand in perfect formation outside the palace.

tumblr_inline_ngsvo3bWfT1rea0r5.jpg

Vibius stands out in the freezing weather with his men, a wolf skin over his back as he is equipped with the same armor as his men. A layer of frost covering their armor and faces. "Sons of Rome! You're probably wondering why we have been out here for hours in perfect formation.." he marches back and forth in front of the formation "I'm here with you to endure and condition you to this vile weather!" he would start to move out of the square as a Centurion cried out orders, the men turn face and march in perfect formation throughout the streets bearing the Roman Banner "I'm am with you men! And know that God is watching over you all!"

ACTIONS (4 Points)

New Roma's Commander is still working on increasing the cities' standing army to a total of roughly 1000 Men. (2 Action Point)
