Exchanging the Quill for the Blade

13th of the Grand Harvest, 1593

It had become a habit at this point, settling in the inn for an hour or so, reading over what he'd written until it was committed to memory without fail. Folding the paper and tucking it into his pocket as he rose up whilst the square was bustling. And it was bustling, for all the progress they'd made, things were going well. Not perfect, but better than they'd been in countless decades. Yet still, Icarus had a sinking feeling in the pit of his chest. High elves had lost their lives, and so when he approached the spot from which he usually spoke, his expression was a somber one.

"Mali'aheral of Haelun'or, I come to you today for a reason different from my typical intentions. Usually I come to speak of some new feat of progress we've achieved, some betterment wrought through the efforts of the mali'aheral. Yet today, that is not why I rise. Today, I come to speak of regress, for we have seen it.

I was one of the few who fought today for our city. I will not put it lightly, it was an atrocity, and mali'aheral blood was spilled. Less ours than theirs, yet too much, and one individual was absent.

Okarir'tir Sul'onn Tahn'thill.

Not long after, the Silver Council received a letter explaining that he would be absent for some time, and that until then his Tilruir'tir would be taking his duties until he returned or the Silver Council saw fit to replace him. Yet I think his watch has run long enough. Elevariran still stand weakened, a shadow of what they ought to be, and with great frequency they are not around when they are most needed. Yet this is plain, and his replacement should be an obvious necessity.

What is not, I would argue, is what Haelun'or requires. Too long have we had leaders of military who act like tyrants. They betray our ways and live by the blade, using the edge of the blade to maintain order rather than maehr'sae hiylun'ehya. Iyathir, Elibar'acal, Izalith, they all carried out such gross misdeeds in their reigns. This is not what we need.

If I am chosen as elokarir'tir, then I will hold the position not just as a warrior, yet as a man of the law. The pure do not rely upon violence to maintain order, yet instead resort to it only when it is most necessary. Thus, it will be my imperative to take in every suspect without harm lest they give me no other option. The pure do not murder, they carry out the law.

If I am chosen as elokarir'tir, then I will seek to reform our systems of trial. For too long has corruption seeped into our system and rotted it from within. It is my intention to offer defendants the opportunity to have their case heard with open ears, and defended by those who have closely studied our laws and precedents. Likewise, I believe there must be a means for each judgment to be questioned, and if allowed, will place checks in our system to halt the corrupt. The pure do not tolerate corruption, they root it out in favor of justice.

If I am chosen as elokarir'tir, then I will utilize my blade as Larihei would want of me: sparingly. The blade is the tool of the craven and the lesser. No, instead the tool I will use is one far greater, that of our walls. For with them, we can nurture maehr'sae hiylun'ehya as we have been for the past decade, and begin to return to the path Larihei set for us. The pure do not march, they pursue progress and health.

To exchange a quill for a blade is a sacrifice, yet it is one that must be taken. And with that, I await the decision of the Silver Council, for this choice rests in their hands."

"You are many things, elf, yet a military leader is not one of them." comments Salazar Elibar'acal.

An elf would look over at her customary spot at the tavern, glancing over to her acquaintance giving his heartfelt speech. Listening to him attentively, she furrows her brows in confusion soon after declaring his intentions.

"A librarian turned general? I dont think that's how its supposed to work."

"We have suffered. Oh, we have suffered."

Cahir's eyes center on the man, holding his gaze.

"But I do not believe you are the key. You are no master of the blade, you hold no experience in managing a military, you do not understand how to fight. You know no formations, draft no treatises, know no bounds. You, sir, are a scholar with an unparalleled hunger for knowledge, this fight is not yours. It is the fight of Maehr'sae Hiylun'ehya -- that driving force between both of us, but you do not fight as I do. You do not have the stamina, you do not have the drive, and the military will suffer in your grasp."

Cahir's finger tightened, his hands clasped before him. The steel of his face plate glints coldly.

"I, Cahir aep Ophael, do wholeheartedly swear that should I be made Okrarir'tir we shan't bend the knee to intruders. The military will prosper and all will be at it should be, artillery shall be amplified and our weapons enhanced. I will safeguard us from foreign conquerors and ensure that our relationships within and without flourish, for that is the duty of an arbiter of Maehr'sae Hiylun'ehya. I do not take kindly to the thought of an ill prepared leader taking care of this glorious militia and twisting it into a perversion of government and economics, I will not see the military become a bureaucracy. And thus I challenge you, Icarus Adil, may  the best man win."

16th of The Grand Harvest, 1953

A mali’aheral clad in the uniform of elEvariran approaches the city square. He begins to speak, drawing your attention to him.

“I say to you, denizens of Haelun’or, residents of elCihi’thilln. That I, Braxus Ni’leya am running for the revered position of elOkarir’tir. Undoubtedly, my name is known. For those who know of me, you will know that I have served an an evarir of the State and its people since The Fringe. Always, have I had and always do I intend, to preserve elmaehr’sae hiylun’ehya and the interests of the people whom I lay my life down for.

The role of elOkarir’tir - The Guardian, is as per our Government. 1) Preservation, 2) Preparedness, 3) Duty and finally 4) Order.

  • 1) Preservation; Above all else it is the duty of the Okarir’tir to preserve and uphold the maehr’sae hiylun’ehya and Silver Law, assuring that the Obvious Laws are obeyed just as penned by Lucion Sullas, and that all other crimes are seen to by a trio of three Parir’tiran, appointed by the Uthir, Okarir’tir or Okarir’mali, in order of authority.

  • 2) Preparedness; The Okarir’tir serves the military, assuring that those who are of both Silver and Red are both of adequate number and prepared to bleed for the city and suffer for the vision of Larihei.

  • 3) Duty; The Okarir’tir serves at the discretion of the Uthir and Haelun’or. He shall be willing to put down his life like any soldier of Haelun’or to protect it. The Okarir’tir is expected to fight in all wars and recruit others to fight alongside themselves.

  • 4) Order; The Okarir’tir, beyond all other duties, also is tasked with the upholding of Order, assuring that our city maintains structure and does not descend into the behaviour of beasts and animals.

Throughout my time serving as an evarir, I have shown my willingness to fulfill these four, fundamental principles. I was made a Minister for Justice during the time of the Citadel, I led Len’niut, a force, during the Genocide of Phaedrus. I have trained and fought alongside many Mali’aheral. I give you my word, that as your Okarir’tir, I will continue to uphold elmaehr’sae hiylun’ehya, the traditions, culture and purity of our blessed and venerated society.

I will now address my opposition. Firstly, our current Okarir’maehr. Dear Okarir’maehr, You speak of regression yet have you not authorized a mali’ame to serve as Tilruir’maehr? To say regression, is an understatement. Furthermore, the closest thing to the tip of a sword that you have ever held is a quill. You have never served in the military nor are you a warrior. You have not trained, nor have you commanded. You are well suited to your current position and I would urge you to remain there. You have no experience in leading, or serving in the military.

Now, I shall move on to the honorable evarir. You recognise that our arsenal is lacking, yet you fail to see why our arsenal is lacking. Lliran, we face not an external enemy, but an internal ideology. The ideology in question, is the rabid liberalism that we have let seep through the bars of our gates and into the minds of our people.

I have seen several impure mali’aheral roam about the streets. I have witnessed many undesirables in the Silver District. I have heard some of our own sympathise with mali’ata. There was a time when oratory procedure was encouraged. When great works of literature were produced. When great scientific progressions were procured. Everything that made Haelun’or great in the past has become stagnant.

If I attain this position, I will, with the council’s permission, reinstate the E.T.H.I.C or something very similar to ensure that the infectious ideology of liberalism is eradicated. An ideological war is already waging within our walls. I say it is time to end it. Kaean’leh thilln chul’okarae."

Having finished his speech, the mali'aheral returns to his duties as an evarir.
