It is undoubtable that the Empire fell due its failure to recognize the sovereignty of God’s children.

The almighty creator, forever august in his wisdom, created the first, nameless man and woman. These two spawned between them them four sons: Malin, father of elves; Krug, father of orcs; Urguan, father of dwarves; and finally Horen, father of men. The spawn of Horen are our people. God blessed mankind with our Seven Skies, and damned Iblees cursed us with our mortality.

I digress; this is no recollection of ancient history. I establish this as a background to today. For centuries, mankind formed numerous nation states. From cold Hanseti to rich Alras, the sons of Horen formed numerous polities which were each distinct and bore their own national identities. In time, these polities expanded, often conquering or amalgamating one another. And furthermore, a singular polity was established: the Empire.

The Empire was never, for long, a coherent entity. Under the strong reign of Godfrey of House Horen, who claimed direct patrilineal descent from Horen, the First Empire flourished. Soon came the Second Empire, under Sigismund of House Carrion. Dynasties changed over and over, with numerous realms slipping from imperial authority, and the Empire rising and falling in its power, until our current and final Fifth Empire, once more under House Horen.

The Empire, in truth, was not beneficial to mankind. Mankind is disparate; numerous cultures exist within that spectrum, from the Heartlanders – Savoyards, Relourians, Waldenians, or Lotharingians, among others – to the Highlanders – Carnatians, Hansetians, Norlanders, Courlanders, etcetera… It is evident that the tribes of mankind are numerous. I therefore ask you to consider the following conjecture.

If the sons of Horen are not unified, how then do they organize themselves? Surely without a unified imperial authority, the obvious answer is nationalism. To the Waldenians, God gave a kingdom; to the Hansetians, God gave a kingdom; to the Lotharingians, united with the Savoyards, God gave a kingdom; to the Courlanders, God gave a kingdom. This is reasonable.

It is these traditions which define us. The people of Haense, under the privy of young Marius, find security and peace; the recently unified people of Courland, united before their Tuvya, will surely find prosperity in the coming years… Considering the failures of the Empire, it is reasonable to assume that these kingdoms are the logical next step. Mankind must form a new status quo, and I do think it has.

Yesterday, those marble pillars of the Empire crumbled. Today, hastily we erect numerous castles, cities, and polities, building out of the Empire’s ashes – mankind’s homelands. And tomorrow, we will find solace in our new international stage. For the sons of Barbanov, d’Amaury, Ashford, Staunton, and all will forge their realms in the coming days.

Let us not repeat the mistakes of history; condemn to reminiscence the Empire, and embrace the kingdoms of today. Ensure that for all posterity, we will no longer live under the iron fist of a malevolent despot who calls himself our emperor but in truth is little more than a glorified overlord. Each and every one of us has a duty, a duty to recognize the claim of each and every people to their own fatherland.

Let none of us not follow in the footsteps of the Empire and ignore the sovereignty of God’s children.

In nomine dei †

Sylvestre Adelheid of House Halcourt

Viktor Ruthern would push a hand over his windswept hair as he read the issue, his lips twitching into a small smile. “Thank you,” he would murmur to himself as he reads it once again, eyes lit with a warmth and gratitude.

Assuming Sylvestre heard him, he'd offer a retort. "Are you daft? I was in Lorraine when Johanessburg exploded. Furthermore, you obviously do not understand the logic of the essay at all. The essay proposes that in the absence of the Empire, each and every culture of mankind deserves a fatherland: the Hansetians deserve their Kingdom, the Lotharingians theirs, etcetera. Evidently you cannot comprehend an argument as straightforward as that."

Zvarak chuckled again

"Not you, belligerent drunk-man! Your pitiful Emperor."

Constantine mails a letter to Sylvestre's new house. It reads, "Well done."
