Established in the Year of Our Lord 1620, the Constabulary was established as the Imperial Brigade of the Crownlands. As lawkeepers of the newfound city of Adelburg, they mainly served to safeguard the capital and its surrounding fiefdoms. The Constabulary is charged to ensure the Emperor’s Peace and the general lawfulness of the Adelaidean Crownlands. In this, they work hand in hand with the Imperial Estate and the Judiciaries of the Court.

“He deserves a punch in the mouth and a trial, sir.”

Guardsman Hugo the Huge, to his Deputy Constable  Fri Longchamp, circa 1625.

RANKS

OFFICERS

LORD CONSTABLE - Raised by the Emperor himself, the Lord Constable oversees all the activities of the Constabulary. He appoints Deputy Constables who are charged with the day-to-day affairs of the Brigades.

“I’m the Lord Constable, what are you going to do? Stab me?”

Lord Constable Isaac I, Circa 1626, prior to being stabbed.

DEPUTY CONSTABLE - Appointed by the Lord Constable; Deputies handle the payment, discipline, and equipment of the guard force. They are the de facto commanders, when the Lord Constable isn’t physically present, and often deal with the public’s concerns.

“Deputy, I need some keys to the Bastion.”

Recruit Clark to the Deputy Constable, circa 1622, regarding keys.

CAPTAIN - Captains are those in the force who have proven more than able in the fields of command and, when the Constables themselves are not present, take over all command. While not charged with the management of equipment or pay, Captains primarily serve to recruit, organize, train, and command.

“I’m the camel, you’re the straws.”

Captain Pierre Francois  to a group of footmen, circa 1624, acting rowdy.

LIEUTENANT - The subsidiary officers of the Captain. Often working as his aides and second-in-command during absence. The Lieutenant is both a veteran guardsman and able commander. However, they are not charged with any affairs of the administration such as training.

“Get me some coffee, bud.”

Lord Constable Isaac of Aeldin, circa 1626, to a lieutenant.

FOOTMEN

SERGEANT - Recommended by the Deputy Constable and approved by the Lord Constable, Sergeants are veterans of the brigade who have proven able in the fields of basic command and organization. In the absence of an officer, the Sergeants can handle basic instruction including gate duty and organizing patrols.

“I’m the only friend you’ve got.”

Grizzled Sergeant Philip Windsor to a newblood recruit on training day.

CORPORAL - A  corporal is a guardsman professionally trained in the art of combat and law keeping. The bulk of the order is made of these folk, who have proved themselves both in the line of duty and war.

“Yikes, cap, looks like we got some orcs afoot.”

Corporal Antony Sebastian, circa 1620, after an orc removed his foot.

GUARDSMAN - Below a Corporal but above a recruit, the guardsman walks beats and beats criminals. He has the authority of the law on his side, as well as the blessing of God, and at all costs ensures order continues in the great city of Adelburg.

“Dead people only!”

Guardsman Eduard de Barros, Circa 1623, to an illegal gravedigger.

INITIATE - The newbloods of the force. These folk are often hazed, trained, and hazed again by their superiors. Most pass, however, and go on to become able-bodied guardsmen in their own rite. Initiates are the most frequently called upon, as they are fresh with zeal and bravery.

“Eat the cookie!”

Sergeant Michael Huss, Circa 1624, to Initiate Tom ‘the Thoughtful’.

Officers, on the other hand, dress in a drab dress uniform with purple markings and awards decorating said piece to indicate accolades and rank.

The Constabulary force receives a payment of 75 minae every Saint’s Week. However, by performing their duties above and beyond those in the force may often receive medals and reward.

ISAAC’S RECOMPENSE - If a guardsman dies in the line of duty, his family receives 500 minae as a reward. Named for the Lord Constable Isaac I who perished in the slums to a mugger: “May he rest in solitude.”

THE KIND CLARK MEDAL - Those guardsmen who do not use excessive force in the line of duty, so much so that it is noticed by their superiors, are given 100 minae and a red ribbon. Named for the Guardsman Clark and his kind nature: “I’m a lover, not a fighter.”

THE GILDED GROIN - When a guardsman overcomes a far more fearsome foe, including large orcs and formidable rogue knights, he is awarded a chest of 500 minae and a gold ribbon:. “He has some balls.”
