I am just one of the examples of how the hardships and stress that comes with being a GM can bring a wear on you. I had to take about a month and a half from my duties on the server due to the stress that came with this basically job. Yes the rewards are great but there is also the struggles that come with it. Many of your real life things with fade or suffer, I almost wasn't able to keep up with my sports especially varsity ones due to the stress, my grades suffered, and my social life faded away. If this commitment is not one that you can dedicate a good portion of your time from than don't. Also many people feel that this is less fun than playing as a regular player, although I would have do disagree through the friendships you gain but I do agree in some aspects. Their are many points of you game that will change too such as, your rp will suffer, you might grow distance from the friends you play with in game, your image in game will change, either in a positive or negative.

This is just a firm thing you need to discuss with yorself, can you put in the commitment? Will you give it your all and if so will your mental and or physical health suffer from it? Most importantly do you feel that your real life will suffer in ANY way from this? Think these ovr before you put in an application I urge you.

I´ve been thru the same thing for a couple of months ago, since I became Gm of Sweden largest MC Server. The helpfull side easily takes the upper hand of you, and before you know it youre not playing anymore. You´ll just be busy helping and comming up with solutions to others trouble.

Just hope people really respect the hard work it actually is to run a large community, with a lot of different people involved!

Thumps up for you guys!

If you have negative rep on your profile, that's probably a sign for you to NOT be a gm

Forum rep means absolutely nothing.

If I may post here, I have shown something I made to Seventh once which he said he was proud of me for, but I will tell you all what this thing was.

This will make me look rather funny, as I am not a GM within Lord of the Craft, but I have been a GM over 25 Times and then Administrator over 15 on many severs and throughout this time period merely Three GM's have ever really understood what it's like to be one and what they are up to face against.

Please remember, I am not a GM within Lord of the Craft, this is simply what I used to look for

So, You wish to become a GM? Well, below, is a very detailed wall of text, telling you the pros and cons of the life of a GM, the sheer amount of suffering you will go through, and a guide, telling you how to get to this position, let us get started.

So, I’d promptly wish to say, Everyone, and I mean everyone, within this community can become a GM, and would make good GM’s, the only thing which deters people from this idea is the amount of effort this player gives into their work. Though, we know all people are not perfect, none of our GM’s are perfect. After a year of moderating servers, I’ve realised, that the best way to handle something, is to not think that you are higher then everyone else with your rank, rather, treating everyone with the same respect as you wish to be treated, and rightfully knowing that you are equal with them, this, is only the first step to becoming a GM.

Now, the truth about GM's?

Many people, when trying to become a GM, don’t understand what a GM is, they don’t understand, that by wanting to become a GM they are sacrificing themselves to a entirely different situation and one that can lead to insanity. One day, me, a friend of mine, and Seventh, were in a channel together, talking about GMship, Seventh promptly stated, “Both of you, would never understand what it’s like to be a GM” this was my reply, “A GM is someone that goes above and beyond what they are told to do, they are people, that do not even have to be told to do something once before they get on it. They spend their own time to better the community and work hours on end to ensure it’s safety and enjoyment. A GM is not simply, “Hey, you’re a GM now, go moderate and screw off” It’s a tough job that people don’t realize and it’s not describable on how it’s like.

To me, you shouldn’t have to be told, hey your a GM go moderate, I, do everything a GM currently does, but I don’t have the rank, I don’t have the proper console commands, but I still do it, because, a GM should NOT be told to do something, they should know themselves to do it on their own accord or admit that they do not know how to do it. Following this, will ensure that you will make a good GM.

The downfalls of becoming a GM..

By becoming a GM, you are giving up whatever freetime you have and risking none at all, the job of a GM is a very hard and busy one and has/can result to insanity. You are also saying, I will take every measure to ensure that no harm comes to any of the members of the community and that all conflicts resolve peacefully, take it into consideration as if you are signing a creed to follow in stone, it will never go away unless you are removed or you resign from the GM Team. Here below is a neat written list of the Cons of GMship

  • You are risking whatever freetime you have.
  • You are stating that you will do whatever it takes to better the community.
  • You understand that you can be removed at any given time.
  • You know that you risk hatred and disrespect from the community for your judgment.
  • You realize that you can not allow any friendship to interfere with your duties.
  • You are writing in stone the conflicts you face will have to be bared through.
  • You are agreeing that no matter how hard it is you will remain strong and you will push through until the day you are removed.

The Upsides of becoming a GM

I will say it here and now, if you have applied for GMship only for pros such as spawning, flying, and self pleasure. You should never attempt to walk down the pathway of GMship, no matter how good you are with the community or how well known you are, if this is your reasoning, you will never make a good GM. So, as I state this, I do not hope that any pros must be listed.

Basic Steps?

1. Help out, helping, is one of the main things a GM tries to do, they try to help whenever they can and they do so successfully.

2. Report rule breakings and unfair judgment.

3. Have fun, of course, we know that a GM must remain serious while on duty or doing something important. But, we do not look for hardcore, “Do not ever to this again or you will be banned instantly without appeal and I will see to it you’re never seen back around here” for someone that accidently broke a block near the temple, it’s better to have fun and stay serious like so, “Haha, well, you only broke one block, it’s not that bad, just make sure you don’t do it again and I hope you enjoy your time on the server!”

4. Show Dedication, be active, show the Administrators what you can do and what you wish to do to the community, how you wish to suceed within and help to the best of your ability. Dedication to the server is a true aspect of what we look for in GM’s.

5. Relax, take a breather, don’t spend your days locked up in your room doing modreqs and killing yourself. We’d prefer to have a fully functional mind then a half retarded one.

With this, I can guarentee that one day you will make a great GM, and hey? Perhaps you’ll become a GM on several other servers as well and give them your support and dedication along with LotC? Who knows, at this, I wish you all a goodluck even if you don’t try for GMship, and I hope the best of luck for those who walk the path GMship!

As Freya said, that system is a joke and it shouldn't play any part in the GM application process.
