小洞不补,大洞吃苦。

(Xiǎodòng bù bǔ, dàdòng chī kǔ.'small hole not mend; big hole eat hardship')

If small holes aren't fixed, then big holes will bring hardship.

水满则溢。

(Shuǐmǎn zé yì. 'water full but overflows')

Water flows in only to flow out.

The woman sat there, a porcelain glass resting in her left hand, and in her right a fan. Snapping it shut, she remarked. "My mother in-law was a grammatical maniac, she'd be proud."

Chen Linli stumbled across the second volume of her mother's proverbs in their family library. She nearly exploded with excitement as she began to read the scroll. She repeated each proverb out loud to herself, as an attempt to commit them to memory. While she didn't understand them now, she made a note to herself to ask her mother about them another time.
