The Balian Incident

 

 

 

 

 

Deep within the expansive sewer system of Balian, several new corridors had been opened by the local excavation crew. It was good money, paid for by the local government, and foreign workers flocked to the city for work opportunity. After several weeks, new causeways were made in the sewers to extend waterflow out to the sea and progress moved at a steady rate.

 

However... lately there had been several reports of strange occurrences: several miners have reported hearing odd noises within the walls, fungus and mildew began growing at an unnatural rate, and then there was the incident: A large rock had fell, bludgeoning one of the miners. Most of the miners, not wanting to curse themselves and already flush with money, disregarded the events as odd and tragic, then moved on as the sewers were finished.

 

One of the miners, though, could not leave it alone. He would be seen ranting and raving in the local taverns, claiming to have seen some shadowy figure lurking in the depths of Balian.

Lady Johanne Vuiller had heard the rumors of varying incidents within the Balian sewers, gaze flicking to her vassal, Apollyon at her right. "Check it for me, will you?" The woman requested, settling back against the plush comfort of her seat, very much pregnant and exhausted.

Apollyon sits at her right, writing a love letter to someone, and he looks up folding the paper and placing it into his jacket. "Of course Lady Vuiller" The lad says with a nod before belting on his longsword and going to look into the rumors, telling a passing servant to get Lady Johanne some tea and to send his letter.

Livia Vuiller sits at the Brown Bear's Rest tavern, reading the rumor-mill news on the recent fate of the miners within the city sewers. "Odd." She says to herself, as she takes another sip of wine. "But horribly intriguing..." She stands up from the bar, now committed to finding out more about what could be hiding deep below.

Deep beneath the streets of Balain, an intrepid party of adventurers and townsfolk assembled to 'slay the beast' which lurked below in the sewers. They hastily made their way down and into the depths, where they discovered a locked door. Emir de Rosius forced it open - revealing an ancient chamber on the other side. Before them stood a goblin, looking strangely at a book upon a lectern. Upon approaching it, a horrible den of rats began attacking them! A brief clash ensued, wherein Livia Vuiller was bitten on the neck by the feral beast. Scared for their lives, most of the members fled the chamber - running back towards the surface. Livia, demanding to stay down there, discovered a baffling tome upon the lectern, one whose pages remained completely indecipherable to her untrained eye. Left behind was Ardad Rashul, Emir, Livia, and Roxana, who entered an adjoining chamber. Within it, a strange force possesed Livia, causing her to experience fits of madness and visions of a leather-faced man, who hauntingly encroached upon her. Out of fear of her thrashing, the group knocked the girl unconscious, and departed towards the surface. But not before this ghost jumped from Livia, and entered the body of another.
