A LETTER TO HIS HOLINESS

1891

@Balthasar

To His Holiness Pontian IV

I write to the most August Vicar of the Faith with modesty and reverence. Twenty two years ago, it was your Holiness who baptized me upon the font in Vienne, only days after the Basilica of the Argent Star was obliterated and the scourge of blood rain over Providence did cease.

I know your Holiness is most busy with many affairs, among them the righteous crusade against heathens and the heretical forces that seek to diminish the hold of piety upon GOD’s children across the realm. However, I find myself at your mercy and discretion:

Recently, having moved into a homestead upon the River Petra, one previously occupied by a late Baroness of House de Rosius and her kith, I invested some time in doing away with the vestiges of residence that the previous owners had left. What I have found has sickened my stomach:

Behind closed steel doors, upon the highest level of this home, I have found a clandestine sanctuary for the dark arts, littered with contraptions of the most macabre caliber, and tomes riddled with eldritch incantations.I would further go into detail but I could not remain in the chamber long out of concern for my well-being.

I have fortunately encountered His Eminence the Cardinal and Sister Calliope conducting tests against foul beasts here already. I ask of Your Holiness only to expend a clergyman and inquisitor to investigate this scene and, with your eminent assent, to cleanse my newfound home of the black pall which darkens its boundaries.

We in the Commonwealth of Petra are a pious people and find that there is no place for witchery in our midst.

Signed,

Matilda, Countess of Mardon, Representative of the Old Regime within the Commonwealth of the Petra.

A sealed letter is delivered to Matilda by courier donned in the heraldry of the High Pontiff. Breaking open the considerably large wax seal, the letter would read like so:

5th of Horen's Calling, 1892

Joannesport

To the most devout Excellency Countess Matilda,

Blessings to you, Countess of Mardon. Your letter to Us is well received. We are glad that you are concerned about the well-being of your people. We understand that his Eminence, Cardinal Viktor and Sister Calliope have conducted tests in all of Almaris, their efforts are to be lauded and imitated by others. Not long ago in Joannesport, the very city We write this letter from; a coven of vampires was discovered by his Eminence. These vampires had masqueraded in the midst of Humanity for years, God can only know how long. We called them friends, dined with them and even celebrated sacred ceremonies with them.

Verily We understand your concerns! His Eminence and the diligent sister will focus their efforts in Petra, furthermore, We will be sending Our personal inquisitor to investigate alongside the two. The darkspawn are everywhere, they have scattered from Serheim and sadly we must look to our own kin. It is an appalling thought that your best friend or even family could be an advocate for the darkspawn.

The Cardinal Viktor will speak with you if the need arises, We leave this affair in his capable hands. May God bless you and keep you forever.

"And I have also breathed life into your heart, and the hearts of your children. And I have given you life: I am your father, and the father of all things. 7 And so I shall guide you in a theater of virtue, and the virtuous shall not live except by My Word." (Spirit 1:5-7)

His Holiness Pontian IV,

High Pontiff of the Church of the Canon, Archbishop of Visigia, Successor of the High Priesthood of the Church, Supreme Pontiff of the Church of True Faith, Keeper of the Canon, Missionary to Aeldin, High Servant to the Exalted's Testaments, Humble Servant of the Faithful and Vicar of GOD

The Inquisitor of the Church; Louis Joseph received the letter; one of his eyebrow raised - scanning over it; mumbling. "Good God, mother; I pray you have nothing to do with this..With that the man nodded; ready to serve the Pontiff with this case.

The former member of the Rosius Household Emir de Rosius would read the missive as he smoked his own cigar before flattening it on the table and pointed to it as he looked towards his sister Roxana de Rosius, the former Baroness of Rosius. "Is she talking about the same room that we broke in as children? I mean... its just arcane. Since I didnt see anything off.. Should we go and talk to her?" @kennyr
