Celianorian Culture Handbook

The Basics

Stars welcome you, friend! In the following handbook all important information regarding our culture & traditions in Celia'nor, the Starland and home of the High Elves (mali'aheral) will be noted.

1. Sayings & Greetings

You are likely to encounter the following sayings or expressions within Fi'andria, the city of stars and embers. Using them is an expression of knowledge of Celianorian tradition.

Stars welcome (you): A simple welcoming phrase used by well-educated Celianorians.

Stars guide you: A simple phrase you wish those that depart.

Ivarielle's Grace: A simple curse referring to the founder of Celia'nor.

Stars!: Another curse used by educated Celianorians.

ilMaehr'sae Ilkun'ehya: "with knowledge and steel" - the philosophy of the 'aheral.

ay'Celia'nor!: A battlecry used by the Celiadiraar.

You aren't the brighest star in the veil, are you?: A rather cynical way to express another's low intellect.

2. Key believes

You are likely to realize that the Celianorian high elf isn't like another - they harbor a certain individualism. Yet, they are united by those following values, which largely stem from Celia'nors philosophy: ilMaehr'sae Ilkun'ehya.

Knowledge-seeking (maehr'sae): A good Celianorian is educated, often a voidal mage. They seek progress through knowledge and like to educate one another. They care for the arts just like the natural sciences. Astronomy and voidal magic is especially popular among the educated elite, as both reprensent the stars.

Militarism (ilkun): One who does not understand the value of the military is considered a fool who will never rise through the ranks nor gain social prestige. Scars for example, are seen as something of worth: They show one's endurance and will to survive.

Monarchism: The Celianorian Nation was founded upon the failed democracy which led the High Elves into ruin. Hence, elections are something frowned upon.

Meritocracy: The idea that those who work hard and behave properly should rise the ranks of society.

Decency: A proper Celianorian is well-behaved; he doesn't scream, doesn't fall to alcoholism and doesn't reveal overly much skin. They address their aristocrats as "Lord" or "Lady". Romantic decency is expected too - public kissing for example is frowned upon, sullying one's bloodline with non-High Elves is considered a severe crime.

3. Core institutions

Any nation is build upon institutions, once more those in Celia'nor stem from Ivarielle's philosophy: ilMaehr'sae Ilkun'ehya. Keepers of knowledge and steel. While the Silver Phoenix’ Society mainly cares for the knowledge, the Guardforce - the Celiadiraar has its eye on the steel.

The Silver Phoenix' Society: The institution that manages the library, the tavern, the theater and the Arcanic Court. They are the protectors of knowledge, culture and history.

The Guard (Celiadiraar): The protectors of the realm; they ensure its safety and keep order. Disrespecting the guard makes one a fool.

The Court & Aristocracy: As democracy is a failure and the Celianorians have moved on from the old ways it is seen as a great honor to be lifted into nobility. Yet, this is unlike the human nobility: Any family or individual must work hard to keep their rank within the meritocratic society and demotions are common.

Valyris smiled upon reading the guide, tucking it into the pocket of her robes for easy reference.
