Nation Leading, For 3 Years?

In your time as a NL, what are some things about your nation's identity that you really wish you could just change on command (if you're willing to say, of course)?

Alternatively, having been a NL so long, what's something about the role of NL that you feel has changed for the better or worse, or both, since you first stepped up to the plate? I know it's a challenging role for many, but as someone doing it so long surely you've been hit with changes from the community or from how NL are handled that make things a bit easier or harder over time.

When I first took over. I wish that I could have Thanos snapped away the idea that we were a Vassal under other nations. Thankfully, over time, this "idea" has faded into the wind. Fingers crossed saying this doesn't bring that up again.

A lot of people also say that we are inactive and they go "why would I bother to head there if it's dead?". We are, at least in my option a pretty active place. I wouldn't say we are the most active, however, I would personally say there is almost always someone here. I know this is something that non-"mainstream" nations always get and I hope that mindset changes in time.

I think the best change over all was getting rid of activity checks. It was so hard to have your group venture elsewhere on the server because if they did that.. They'd be taking "activity" away from the "home base". It was what made or broke a community.

It takes away the "You have to be here" and allows people to go have fun!

Spoiler

I remember when I took over, we had just gotten plans set up for what we were going to do with our second tile (tiles were based on activity).. and rp things happened where people just.. stopped showing up to Vortice because they thought we were a vassal and an unsafe place to be.

I felt crushed and like I was letting everyone down because we had worked really hard for everything we had at that point. I'm not saying we still don't work for it, however, it was objectively a lot harder. Every week I saw our activity numbers go down.. and down.. and down... and down.. and then they would dip up slightly.. and go down again.. and then stabilized with small fluctuations. We lost our second tile, we lost our nation status, we were moved down to a settlement, and we lost the room we had for aspiring vassals. I know I'm not the only one this kind of thing happened to.

I thankfully wasn't so tied to the numbers that it affected my mood like I know some other NLs had at the time.. But those aren't my stories to share. So I'll leave that there

when will you let go and watch your successor stretch and bend the dream of your nation, changing it in strange and sometimes beautiful ways?

When you are running a nation for so long, do you tend to get more sway on the server for events and story and such? I've noticed some groups tend to get more events than others, and I wondered what tends to lead to such choices and situations?

Vortice doesn't really have a successor? We are a vote based place and as of right now, no one is looking to step towards that plate.

Would it be nice to pass on the torch one day, of course! That day will come in time

While change is beautiful, I want the community to have someone that doesn't just want the tile for power and will care for those here

Absolutely not! I wish that were the case. It's like pulling teeth to work with most staff members. Especially story team, I've been outright told by many of them that they wish Vortice would die already.. Which isn't the most comforting thing to hear, but c'est la vie!

There are a handful of staff members that are nothing but pure joy to work with like @MayRndzwho is the current ST we are working on our cave event line with.. But that isn't server wide.

1. What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced while being an NL for so long and how did you overcome it?

2. What is some advice you can give people aspiring to be vassal leaders and/or NLs? What are things you think they should make important?

Congratulations on 3 years!

1. The biggest challenge.. That's a tough one. Probably when people come for the soul reason of starting drama and leave once the chaos has spread. We deal with it by communicating both irp and oocly. I wish I had more specifics. I'm struggling to think of things while being NL in regards to NL things.

2. I've said it a few times, however, commutation is vital. I'd also say patience is a key part of that too and keeping a level head in sticky situations

And thank you!!
