Sorvian awakening, illustrated by Aihp.

ย

โ€œWhat a wonder, to be borne of clay!

Your self coddled by the comfort of earth,

your mind let free alike the flow of water,

a freedom resembling the whims of air,

a passion burning akin to fire...

ย

Really - how did we not see this earlier?

The soul acts as a base - and our character, as symbols.โ€

ย

ย

Origin

ย

The sorvian sat at their chipped oak desk, thumb rubbing over the upper-seam of where their mask were fused to their head; the occasional flare of sprinkled soul dancing from the friction alike the spark of a flint and steel. The construct stared down at a bundle - or rather mess, of alchemical circles; recipes drafted, ditched, renewed, then rewritten. The proverbial bags that should've hung from the sorvian's 'eyes' nevertheless felt heavier and heavier - their cause of exhaustion piled besides them in many, many failed flasks containing all manners of slime, ash, curd and mulch.

Surrounded by these papers, sat one last glass flask - containing a seemingly clear liquid of mundane looking nature. They stared at it excessively, flicking it on occasion and watching the liquid wobble and bounce. The last eight attempts used this same recipe; and as far as the alchemist could tell, were correct in theory - but clearly wrong in practice. The process was always the same - combine and brew the ingredients, touch the flask with all fingers, using the abilities of a sorvian sculptor - channel soul into it... and then despair as nothing changes; the soul briefly flashing in glow upon the glass, then disappearing forever.

The sorvian had certainly pushed their limits in soul expense, and had grown impatient with their studies being relentlessly rejected by reality. What were they missing? Is the idea of imbuing liquid with the soul simply impossible? What makes it possible with a sorvian?

It were when the sorvian grasped their mask in frustration, that they came to a realization. The mask - the vessel, porcelain. A fool they realized themselves to be; they had abandoned the one constant between all sorvians - their composition, clay. Frantically they stood, launching their chair to the ground and grabbing a vase from an awfully dusty corner. The solution from the flask found itself splashed into the depths of the vase, and sealed with the porcelain cap that came with it. They took a moment, collecting themselves from the excitement of discovery and taking a metaphorical breath in preparation. Their hands join to embrace each side of the vase, and in last ditch effort, they channeled what little soul they had left to offer.

Had it worked...? Silence - a deafening silence obscured by questions and doubts. They must hear something; anything but this - and so the sorvian plugged their ear to the side of the vase, and listened...

They couldn't see inside, but they could hear it... a light hum, a subtle resonation of space in a contained, secure environment. The light ripple of liquid as if brushed by a gust of wind...

Within it sat, calm and content, held gently by the bounds of its clay chamber - the soul, tamed.

Soul Elixir [Common - T1]

ย

Spoiler

Recipe:

  • Base: Any Liquid

ย

  • Water: Life x 3
  • Mundane: Grace x2
  • Mundane: Endurance x2
  • Mundane: Connection x1
  • A measure of blood.

ย

Creation:

Mix your liquid first with water:life, then stir while heating, over heat until the liquids combine. Once combined, bring the solution to a boil, and then add in order; Grace, Connection, and then Endurance. Stir until these ingredients dissolve completely - leaving a seemingly unchanged liquid. Allow the solution to cool, and once cooled, add your measure of blood. Pour the liquid into a clay / porcelain container. Seal the container tightly.

ย

Once sealed, a sorvian sculptor must channel a donation of their soul into the container - in similar fashion to how they would with a sorvianโ€™s awakening. The soul will be stored within the containerWithin the container, the soul will be stored - granting the solution (and any further potions it may be used in) a vibrant glow in hue matching the sculptorโ€™s own soul. Do not remove the seal before use, - as you risk the fragment of soul escaping its containment, and rendering the solution useless.

ย

Effects:

This concoction, on its own, has no effects - its true use revealed upon its combination with other potions; intended to replace any liquid base of any consumable potion - as well as the potions created under Porcelainic Alchemy.

ย

When used as a base for another potion already made using the same liquid as the elixirโ€™s base, the soul imbued into the concoction combines itself with the resulting potion - giving it a unique property. In contact with a sorvianโ€™s mask, the potion will be absorbed into the mask - granting the sorvian the effects of the potion, and so avoiding the need to consume the potion - which sorvians are unable to do due to their anatomy. This unique effect works by similar methods that sculptors use to bind their soul to clay - the concoction binding with the sorvianโ€™s soul itself, and consuming the liquid in the process.

ย

When combined with alchemies outside of porcelainic alchemy, the soul elixir strictly only works with consumable potions - such as potions of acuity, catโ€™s-eye, heat-sight, lumine mentis, beguiling brew, etc; and only works with potions that utilize a liquid base.

If a sorvian is to absorb a concoction useless to them due to the nature of the potion - such as fervour concentrate, where the effects encourage vomiting and cleansing of the form - the effects will be nulled, taking no effect.

ย

Due to the nature of this potion - if left unsealed for 5 emotes, the soul will escape - meaning the creation of some potions will be completely impossible. This threat of the soul escaping exists in similarity to a sorvianโ€™s own.

ย

After combination with the potion, the resulting potion must be stored in a clay / porcelain container - to retain the fragment of soul.

ย

Redlines:

- Does not require ST signing.

- Requires FAโ€™s in both Alchemy and Sorvian Sculpting to make. Two players with these feats separately cannot work together to create the Soul Elixir, as the sculptor must have a profound understanding of the potion and its alchemical properties to properly bind their soul to it.

- Any potion using a Soul Elixir as its base, no matter its original colors, will glow with a hue matching the sculptorโ€™s soul who channelled their soul into it.

- The Soul Elixir, and any potion using a Soul Elixir as its base, must be kept sealed in a clay/porcelain container - such as a miniature vase, or bottle formed of clay.

- Even when used in the creation process of other potions, the Soul Elixir can only be exposed from its clay/porcelain containment for up to 5 emotes - meaning some creation processes from other lorepieces may require adjustments upon using a Soul Elixir as its base. (i.e; using a sealed clay/porcelain cauldron rather than a regular one)

- Outside of this lorepiece, Soul Elixir only functions with consumable potions originally made with the same liquid base that the soul elixir was made with. (For example, if a potion originally requires an aqua vitae base, replacing that base with a soul elixir would require the soul elixir used to have been made with an aqua vitae base).

- The absorption property that Soul Elixir offers as a base strictly only works on sorvians, and must be absorbed through the mask to consume.

- Soul Elixir does not work with potions that are not consumable (i.e; will'o bottle, blast potion, tanglefoot, etc). A Soul Elixir may be used to replace a liquid base of these potions, but will not result in an absorption trait, and essentially make no difference.

- If used with a potion external to this lorepiece, all redlines of that potion still apply, excluding the need for consumption when used by a sorvian.

- Soul Elixir combined with potions able to be โ€˜treatedโ€™ upon objects does not allow โ€˜treatingโ€™ a sorvianโ€™s mask with it. (For example, a heat-sight potion could not be treated upon a sorvianโ€™s mask using a soul elixir base)

- If left unsealed for 5 emotes, the soul fragment within will escape - rendering the base useless on its own, or losing its absorption property if used with another potion (unless specified otherwise).

ย

Pseudoblood [Common - T1]
ย

Spoiler

Recipe:

  • Base: Soul Elixir [Distilled Water]

ย

  • Air: Life x3
  • Air: Growth x2
  • Air: Agility x1
  • Mundane: Endurance x4

ย

Creation:

First bring your Soul Elixir [Distilled Water] to a boil, and add your symbols regardless of order. Make sure you keep your solution sealed within a clay/porcelain container - either in the Soul Elixirโ€™s original container, or in a sealed clay/porcelain cauldron - so you do not lose the soul fragment from the elixir. Stir for several minutes until the liquid reaches a consistency and appearance matching with a softly glowing blood. Using a sieve, extract your liquid from any remaining debris, and allow the brew to cool. Secure again within a sealed clay/porcelain container to preserve its longevity, and fragment of soul.

ย

Effects:

This simple concoction acts as a replacement for blood - reverse engineering its contents to create it rather than extract from it. This blood could be used for many purposes, but most notably in this case; sorvian sculpting.

ย

Due to the added endurance of this blood, psuedoblood will not rot if sealed - remaining fresh forever whilst kept in containment.ย

Outside of containment however, this psuedoblood will eventually lose its longevity - taking merely 5 emotes of exposure to lose its carefully contained soul, and becoming nothing but a murky, pungent goo.

ย

Redlines:

- Does not require ST signing.

- Due to the alchemical nature of this psuedoblood, it would not provide any sustenance to a creature consuming it - and would in fact taste rather awful.

- After 5 emotes of being unsealed, the blood will lose its property of longevity - as the soul from its Soul Elixir base escapes from the concoction.

- If a recipe requiring blood requires a specific type of blood (i.e; elven blood, orc blood, human blood, dwarf blood, etc) this blood will not work - as it does not originate from a specific kind of creature.

ย

Terra Transmutation [Common - T2]
ย

Spoiler

Recipe:

  • Base: Soul Elixir [Salt Water]

ย

  • Earth: Connection x2
  • Mundane: Rigidity x3
  • Mundane: Balance x2
  • A handful of powdered clay.

ย

Creation:

Begin by placing signs of connection, rigidity, and balance in your Soul Elixir [Salt Water] base, and bring to a boil. Make sure to seal this process within a sealed clay/porcelain container so you do not lose the imbued soul within - either in the Soul Elixirโ€™s original flask, or in a clay/porcelain cauldron. Once boiling, pour in your powdered clay whilst stirring constantly - until the liquid takes on a slightly viscous texture. Once slightly viscous, remove from heat and allow it to cool. Keep contained in a sealed clay/porcelain container to contain its soul fragment.

ย

Effects:

When this slightly viscous solution is poured onto a naturally occurring material - such as dirt, sand, rock, or even common ores, the exposed material will quickly shift and morph into a soft, pliable clay under the whims of the flowing soul that will pour out from its containment - absorbing the liquid and soul in the process.

ย

This clay could be used in a pinch to obtain the clay necessary to repair a desperate sorvian, or simply for convenience - for a sculptor to create clay, rather than go searching for it.

ย

When used on anything man-made (such as items, structures, weapons, armours) this solution will have no effect - unable to transmute the material due to its removal and reforming from its natural state.

Aswell, if poured on any kind of creature - this solution has no effect, making it harmless.

ย

Redlines:

- Does not require ST signing.

- Terra Transmutation strictly only works on naturally occurring materials - anything with man-made influence will be unaffected, such as; brick walls, glass windows, metal armour, weapons, or clothes.

- Terra Transmutation is harmless to all creatures - ineffective on flesh, the construct form, or anything comprising a being.

- If consumed, this potion is harmless - though the consumer will quickly regurgitate the liquid up in clumps of wet clay.

- Whilst Terra Transmutation can work on ores such as ferrum, aurum, coal or copper - it cannot work on any special ST metals, such as Lunarite, Boomsteel, Thanhium, Azhl, or others.

- After 5 emotes of being unsealed, this potion will lose its effects completely - as the soul from its Soul Elixir base escapes from the concoction.

ย

Commune Concoction [Common - T3]

ย

Spoiler

Recipe:

  • Base: Soul Elixir [Liquid Mana]

ย

  • Aether: Life x4
  • Mundane: Sound x2
  • Mundane: Courage x2
  • Mundane: Clarity x2

ย

Creation:

Within a sealed clay/porcelain cauldron - add all ingredients to your Soul Elixir [Liquid Mana] base. Mix thoroughly, then bring to a low heat. Allow to sit on a low heat until the colour of your mixture changes in colour - notably bearing the glow of the liquid mana you used. Use a sieve to extract your liquid, and keep contained in a clay / porcelain container.

ย

Effects:

When applied to the mask of an unawakened sorvian or a sorvian which has been destroyed, this liquid absorbs into the mask as a donation of soul, and awaits a query. Once a question is asked towards the mask, a glow progressively forms a message in response - cryptic and unreadable in the same sculpting language a sorvian sculptor writes onto a mask with blood during their creation. This writing manifests in a glow similar to how a sculptorโ€™s soul glows during sculpting, and can take a variety of colours depending on the sorvian themselves, or their reaction towards the question/answer.

ย

To decipher this message, a sculptor must be present - their unique talents familiar with this, by nature, gibberish dialect. Should a sculptor channel their soul into direct contact with this message, the meaning of the word becomes enveloped into their mind - taking their thoughts over completely for a moment.

ย

What this message is, is up to the player of sorvian this potion is applied to - and could attempt to answer the question asked, or completely regard something else. Regardless of what question is asked, the sorvian cannot recall memories they may have lost due to their death: and on resurrection or later question, the sorvian does not retain memory of this communication, and so will not retain any knowledge gained through the question.

ย

This concoction allows an emotes of response from the sorvian player per question, and can only respond to 3 questions asked. For example, asking โ€˜do you want to be resurrected, and why?โ€™ would count as two separate questions. At this limit, the glow slowly fades - and the concoction is rendered innate, and completely consumed by the mask.

ย

Redlines:

- Does not require ST signing.

- The sorvian this concoction is applied to can only respond to 3 separate questions. For example, asking โ€˜do you want to be resurrected, and why?โ€™ would count as two separate questions. Aswell, each question must get 1 emote of reply, even if that emote is simply โ€˜yesโ€™ or โ€˜noโ€™.

- For the function of this potion, the sorvianโ€™s mask must be mostly intact.

- These replies are only communicated to the sculptor connecting to the message, and would then have to be communicated through that sculptorโ€™s own words to others.

- Answers given must pertain to the memory loss a sorvian experiences upon death - meaning, the sorvian cannot describe anything leading up to or in the event of their death.

- After 5 emotes of being unsealed and unapplied, this potion will lose its effects completely - as the soul from its Soul Elixir base escapes from the concoction.

Voidance Tonicย  [Common - T3]
ย

Spoiler

Recipe:

  • Base: Soul Elixir [Blood]

ย

  • Mundane: Purity x3
  • Mundane: Blindness x3
  • Mundane: Impediment x2
  • Mundane: Peace x2

ย

Creation:

Keeping your Soul Elixir [Blood] sealed within a clay/porcelain cauldron, bring your base to a boil - then add in order; Purity, Blindness, Peace, Impediment - making sure each collection of signs have thoroughly dissolved into the base before adding the next. Once fully mixed, allow to cool and keep contained within a clay / porcelain container, so that the soul fragment within is contained.

ย

Effects:

When applied to the mask of a sorvian whom is concentrating solely on a memory theyโ€™d like to forget, this tonic can fragment and obscure that memory. The sorvian must concentrate deeply on this memory as the tonic is applied - so that the effects of the potion are guided to the correct memories. Effectively, the effects of this potion mask a chosen memory, creating a blank facade that conceals the original memory, making that memory far more of a challenge to recall.

ย

Whilst not completely erasing the memory - this tonic acts as a shadow to hide it from the conscience, leaving a shifting assortment of fragmented memories that, on their own, are unintelligible. To bring this memory back would require a great deal of effort or reason - perhaps someone would dedicate a great deal of time to reviving the sorvianโ€™s memory through persuasion and proof, or perhaps a series of stressful events that relate to that memory could weave the memory back together.

ย

It is said this tonic is a dangerous one for a sorvian to consume, and the choice to do so should be one dealt with much care, rather than impulse. Due to its nature in making one forget something they otherwise wouldnโ€™t, the voidance tonic can easily come with unforeseen consequences; causing confusion, trauma, or even mind break at worst.

On the contrary, this tonic can offer a suffering sorvian respite from their traumas, and can adversely make it possible to heal a sorvian from mind break if used in the right context.

ย

Redlines:

- Does not require ST signing.

- The voidance tonic cannot wipe the memory of an unwilling participant - the sorvian in question must be willing to obscure that memory, and concentrate deeply on it during application.

- If the sorvian this tonic is applied to fails to concentrate on the memory they wish to forget, the potion can then accidently obscure a different memory, taking effect on the latest memory on their mind during the process. It may also simply have no effect. This โ€˜accidentalโ€™ erasure is completely up to the player consuming the potion, and can in no way be forced upon that player.

- If used on anything but a sorvian - consumed or applied - this tonic has no effect.

- After 5 emotes of being unsealed, this tonic loses its effects - the soul escaping from its containment.

ย

Sorvia Metamorphoseย  [Rare - T3]
ย

Spoiler

Recipe:

  • Base: Soul Elixir [Salt Water]

ย

  • Earth: Connection x1
  • Mundane: Rigidity x4
  • Mundane: Strength x4
  • A handful of powdered clay.

ย

Creation:

Begin by placing signs of connection, rigidity, and strength in your Soul Elixir [Salt Water] base, and bring to a boil. Once slightly viscous, add signs of strength, seal, and firmly shake the concoction for a couple of minutes. Remove from heat and allow it to cool. Keep contained in a sealed clay/porcelain container to contain its soul fragment.

ย

Effects:

When Terra Transmutation is combined with a secret measure of overwhelming strength, its prior gentle process becomes volatile and violent - opening its effects up to a number of further uses - often combative in nature. Due to this, Sorvia Metamorphose should remain sealed upon use, and so should be thrown with intent to shatter its containment, rather than be unsealed and poured onto its target (though it could be used in this way).

ย

Upon contact with any mundane metal, material or even flesh - this potion violently seeks to alter and reform the very structure of whatever it contacts, turning its target into clay - yet due to its haste; without composition, or bonds. This lack of composition causes the clay to crumble into a powder-like substance, consisting of small chunks of clay and sand-like grain. Whilst itโ€™s main use is likely to deteriorate the armour of an opponent, if coming into contact with flesh, itโ€™s effects remain the same - crumbling away and leaving an unsightly open wound where the flesh once existed. Due to its surface-level reactions, this effect can reach and expose bone, but not deteriorate the bone unless another potion makes direct contact with it.

ย

If used against an opponent, this potion can affect one portion of the body; an arm, a leg, the head, or the torso - and only upon the side it made contact with (i.e; the front of a chestplate).ย

However, this potion does not strictly require use against an opponent, and is open to more creative interpretations in its use. A few examples of these uses might include:

ย

  • Application to a cellโ€™s bars to create an opening for escape
  • Application to a wall to deteriorate its structure and create an opening depending on thickness.
  • Application to a city gate to create an opening to enter through
  • Application to a liquid in order to ruin it, and turn it into a powdered measure of clay.

ย

Redlines:

- Requires ST signing.

- Sorvia Metamorphose is, unlike Terra Transmutation, effective against flesh and man-made objects, and will affect them so long as their material is mundane in nature.

- If applied to a structure, this potion can deteriorate a 1x1x1m area enough to create an opening through a wall/floor. Any further would require an additional potion per 1x1x1m.

- This potion requires the general expected amount of emotes to be used, as with any other combative potions. (1 emote for retrieving the potion, 1 emote for aiming/preparing your potion, 1 emote for throwing/application - the former requiring a roll for accuracy).

- On contact with a person, this potion can effect only a singular part of their body (arm, leg, chest, or head) and only deteriorates one surface of that part (i.e; the faceplate of a helmet, the rear of a legplate, the front of a chestplate).ย

- Due to its similarity to Terra Transmutation, this concoction is ineffective against any kind of magical / enchanted item. This does not apply to โ€˜magical creaturesโ€™ - a mage or monster is still susceptible to these effects.

- If consumed, this potion will quickly be regurgitated in clumps of bloody clay. This regurgitation is immediate, and prevents any serious internal damage - although it will certainly be painful and exhausting.

- Whilst Sorvia Metamorphose can work on ores such as ferrum, aurum, coal or copper - it cannot work on any special ST-signed metals, such as Lunarite, Boomsteel, Thanhium, Azhl, or others.

- Due to the nature of its violent reaction, this potion is more susceptible to soul loss. After 3 emotes of being unsealed, unless applied, this potion will lose its effects completely - as the soul from its Soul Elixir base escapes from the concoction.

ย

Material Rejuvenationย  [Rare - T3]
ย

Spoiler

Recipe:

  • Base: Soul Elixir [Distilled Water]

ย

  • Earth: Connection x2
  • Mundane: Rigidity x1
  • Mundane: Balance x3
  • A handful of powdered clay.
  • A measure of liquid mana.

ย

Creation:

Begin by placing signs of connection, rigidity, and balance in your Soul Elixir [Distilled Water] base, and bring to a boil. Once slightly viscous let the concoction sit for a couple of minutes. Remove from heat and pour in your measure of liquid mana. Stir lightly and allow it to cool. Keep contained in a sealed clay/porcelain container to contain its soul fragment.

ย

Effects:

A great weakness of the sorvian form is its susceptibility to damage and the effort and expertise required to repair it - This mixture aims to resolve that difficulty sorvians face, and allow them to heal on the spot - only in a temporary, limited manner.

Upon application to a damaged area of a sorvian, the imbued soul fragment binds with the sorvian and learns their exact original composition. In mimicry of it, the liquid dries and expands like a foam to perfectly fill in the wound and harden into a perfectly shaped filling. This hardened mass connects with the sorvian so deeply that - as if there were never damage - they are able to feel and control the area as normal.

This rash regeneration does not come without its flaws however - the new clay forever brittle until replaced properly by a sorvian sculptor; one good impact enough to shatter it as a whole and undo the entire process. Aswell, this repaired area would bring a foreign sensitivity to the sorvian - even light touch causing a harsh burning sensation throughout the area, as if touching their raw โ€˜fleshโ€™.

ย

Redlines:

- Requires ST signing.

- Material Rejuvenation cannot repair a sorvianโ€™s mask - its integrity crucial for the process. Additionally, Material Rejuvenation will not work at all on a sorvian without their mask, or soul, intact.

- The repairs Material Rejuvenation offers take, in basic cases, 2 emotes to work; 1 for application, and 1 for the repair to complete. In the case of a moveable appendage (such as a hand) It takes 1 additional emote to regain control of it - totalling 3 emotes in total with such cases.

- In the case of a sorvianโ€™s wooden bones being broken / missing upon repair, this potion creates a hardened clay substitute that functions similarly - although brittle, like the rest of the repairโ€™s composition.

- Material Rejuvenation cannot function at all on anything other than a sorvian. In the case that someone drinks it, no effects take place.

- Material Rejuvenation can repair a sorvianโ€™s wound to, at maximum, the span of an average hand. If limbs such as fingers, shoulders, or hands are repaired this way - they will function normally once the process is complete, though with the mentioned drawbacks until repaired properly by a sorvian sculptor.

- After 3 emotes of being unsealed, unless applied, this potion will lose its effects completely - as the soul from its Soul Elixir base escapes from the concoction.

Purpose

ย

ย

Sorvians have existed in LOTC for some time as a comfortable, though overall fluctuating populous of players - I personally play one of the oldest sorvians still around, and have noticed this pattern of players gaining access to the sorvian race, playing for a month or so, and then either moving on to more exciting character concepts or stopping play altogether. I think a big reason for this, fundamentally, is the simplicity of the race. Whilst sorvians have really interesting feats to them that can create a very intriguing and engaging character, the requirement of the character application alongside their relative weakness when compared to other CA's is what, I think, is driving a lot of players away. Why play a sorvian when you could play a robot able to punch through walls, or an undead able to seep the very life from someone's body? I've thought about what to add to sorvians for a long time - the recent rewrite they recently received added a lot of needed detail and depth to the race to set them apart from the rest, but i've only personally noticed a short and limited resurgence in the playerbase. With this alchemy addition, i want to encourage sorvian players to learn new feats with their characters and gain access to the potions within this lore that not only offers them a handful of new roleplay opportunities in the communities (such as the voidance tonic) but also a unique number of tools for combat so that sorvians and sculptors can distinguish their characters in combat aswell.

ย

I think the strongest feature of a sorvian that is offered to the player is the idea of having a set purpose. The 'purpose' in a sorvian gives a player a goal and pushes them to obtain it in whatever way they see fit - i think it is clear that this purpose creates a unique aspect to a character that brings with it a depth and richness of story other races couldn't achieve. I'm hoping that this alchemy addition will bring another avenue to the way sorvian communities function, and how players seek achieving the purpose given to them. Now able to alter their memories, reawaken their dead brethren, and weaponize the functions of their very creation, i think the addition will fit nicely into alchemy as a way for sorvians and sculptors to distinguish themselves among the playerbase - and i hope if you read this, you think; 'Hey, the ability to turn someone's face into clay?! Sign me up!'.

I love the idea of certain potions being locked behind Sorvians, and having potions that only work for them. We need more CA race advantages, specifically for crafted CA's like this to make up for what they lack in being able to learn certain magics and do normal descendant things!ย
