An instructional moment in our world's history and for sure one of the greatest tragedies to ever happen. I have a relative who was a Red Army soldier who helped liberate a woman from the camps and then they were married afterwards.

Many members of my family died to Nazi persecution. Jewish, Romanian, Polish, Slavic, Transgender, Queer, countless people died during Nazi Occupation and as a consequence of the broader genocidal policies of Nazi Germany during WWII.

Be vigilant. There will always be another Hitler, another Stalin, another Pol Pot.

Holocaust Memorial Day, 27th of January

This is a post dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust.

Yesterday was Holocaust Memorial Day, 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945 where millions have died due to their religion, ethnicity, being disabled, and their sexuality. I suppose I am rather late with this post but I wanted to remember all that this is something that can never be forgotten. The survivors have witnessed the most terrifying form of horror in front of their eyes and have lost tons of family members due to the most evil regime to ever exist in this world. It is in times such as these that we must remember the crimes committed against the Jews and the other minorities, because there is a very big presence of anti-semitism on the rise right now. We should never forget what consequence that had for the Jews and the other minorities of Europe.

It is in this post that I remember my great-grandmother who was fortunate to escape persecution because of her ethnicity since she was of Ashkenazi-Jewish descent and living in the Netherlands while under N-zi occupation and was hiding other Jewish, Romani and Sinti people in her home to help them escape the horrors of the concentration camps.

Do you have any family members who have seen these horrors happen during World War II? Feel free to share, do not feel forced, this weighs personally on everyone. May all the souls that have gone through the horrors committed in these camps rest in peace.

1939-1945

Never again.

My response is a little bit late, but I watched the service they did at the gates as it was broadcasted on national tv in my area. It was a really moving tribute to all those who suffered and all those who will suffer due to extreme prejudice and hate. When I watched the survivors approach and light the candles in memory at the very end, it really drove home how few survived, and how fewer this day are around to tell the stories of the horrors of Auschwitz and many other camps from that era. It brought me to tears as I saw the last survivor to light a candle break down into tears herself. Even 80 years later, the horrors are still very much fresh.

I have no family members that I know of that experienced the terrors of N-zi Germany, but I do take it upon myself to remind myself of the past, what happened and who suffered during those times. Many of us live in comfort because of the actions taken to halt the wicked crimes that occurred behind those walls as well as the efforts made by survivors ensure that their stories were untold and that the truth was not buried in history. We owe it to all of them to retell their stories and remind people what humanity is capable of if people are governed by hatred and fear rather than compassion and acceptance.

My heart goes out to the millions of people who have loved ones who had to endure the hell of those camps and those today who are forced to experience similar conditions.

Never let the world forget.

Never again.
