  1. 1. What do you think?

    • Good Idea.
    • Bad Idea.
    • Alright, but needs improving.

This idea is still a work in progress, but I have devised most of the lore for it. I will be putting this in the guilds topic as well with an application form for The Master Thieves Guild.

I want to know how many people are interested in living here, so if you are, please post and say so. If you have an Idea on where I can improve it, please also say so! :)

Also, who do I need to speak to about starting this town in the wilds?

The Town of Farborough

The Lore

How the town came to be.

There were once seven thieves walking the lands together. They were brothers, sisters and children of chaos. Untouchable by the law, and only caring for the riches and pleasures in life.

They travelled for years and years all across the lands, plundering and taking everything they could carry, sometimes leaving nothing behind.

Their riches were great and many, and soon they found themselves in need of a place to rest and stow away their treasures. The eldest of the seven suggested they head back for their own home scattered across the lands, but the youngest then declared that they would be recognized at once and sent straight to the gallows. The group began to bicker and argue, yelling so loud as to alert a nearby group of travelling guards.

The men sprang form the darkness, taking the seven by surprise, and soon they were bound and gagged, watching the guardsmen laugh merrily and congratulate each other for the victory. All hope for them seemed to be lost…. Or so they thought. Out of the blue, the guards dropped dead, arrows embedded in each of their backs. The seven looked around franticly to see a smaller group of men and women, all dressed as they themselves were. Soon their bonds were cut and thanked the other group copiously. Once they were free the eldest asked why they chose to help them. The other group smiled back, and one of them walked forward and put a hand on the eldest’s shoulder. “We are family” He said. “And family take care of each other.”

A while after this event, the seven decided to found the town of Farborough. It’s gate open to anyone seeking asylum from the law. The youngest of the group has been chosen to take charge and build the town, then lead it and any people whom it’s walls protect.

What will Farborough be like for the player?

The idea of this town is to be a rough, rowdy and drunken place where criminals, thieves and other illicit characters can live or just visit, without the worry of being caught out by the law. It will be a place where almost everything is permitted to an extent, i.e. though the town rules will be slack, you still have to follow the sever rules, no matter where you are.

Farborough is in no way meant to be a dangerous or menacing place however, just rather slack when it comes to following the law.

The lifestyle you live in Farborough could be a lazy one, spending your time fraternizing, drinking, brawling and basically just having a great time. Or if you’re looking to do something a little more dangerous, or maybe you’re just feeling that itch to lay your hands on something shiny you could always consider joining the master thieves guild, who will spend their time devoted to life’s more material pleasures such as gold or diamond, or even just to improve their thievery skills.

Town Rules:

I. Citizens must swear allegiance to this town and what we represent. Any citizen found leaking information about the city or anyone under it’s protection to a figure of the law will be executed or exiled. ((This is a safe place for thieves, criminals and other deviants. Anyone giving out information about the whereabouts of a person in the town or about the town will be assumed as a traitor and a spy and will be treated as such.))

II. Thievery is permitted in this town. But ONLY in SMALL amounts. If anyone is found stealing from multiple houses or people in a short time span they will be SEVERELY punished. ((I suggest locking your chests or getting someone else to do it for you. If someone has stolen from you I will not investigate the matter unless they have broken this rule.))

III. PVP is allowed to an extent. ((If you are in something like a bar brawl, disagreement etc then PVP is fine. Just no walking up to someone and hitting him or her with a sword for no good reason. You have to RP before the fight. If you have any complaints about someone not following this rule, please tell one of the towns higher ups and the offender will be severely punished.))

IV. People wishing to live in Farborough must first speak with the current town leader. ((I will ask you some questions but most importantly I will check if you have an accepted Villain Application. Normal people can live in this town but if you are caught stealing or doing any other activities that require a villain application, you will be reported. Do NOT use this town as an excuse to break the server rules. Play fair people.))

V. Should Farborough be attacked then it is the duty of the citizens to stand and fight for it, and the protection it offers.

VI. GREIFING IS A BANNABLE OFFENCE. ((Farborough is going to be built out in the wilds, far away from any nation, so as a result it won’t be protected. I’m not building this town so that people can come and harvest supplies from it, I’m building it because I believe that it will be a great new addition to Aegis with a unique atmosphere that will present many exciting RP experiences for players. So please do not greif, as that will annoy me greatly and it will subtract form the atmosphere.))

Government System.

Ranks are from highest to lowest (Yes, the Master thieves Guild is a part of the government.)

The Lord and/or Lady of Farborough.

The ruling leader of Farborough.

Duties include:

1. Makes the major decisions for the town.

2. Ultimately responsible for the wellbeing of the town and its citizens.

3. Is responsible for appointing the other positions in the government.

4. Oversees any new construction in Farborough

5. Every lord/lady must appoint a second in command to themselves.

6. Is in charge of accepting new citizens into the town.

7. Keeps an eye on the order of the town. ((Just needs to make sure that everything is running smoothly and that everyone is happy

8. Deals with any situations that arise. ((eg, OOC disputes, someone’s not happy with another player and also any IC incidents))

9. Is the only member of the government who has the power to declare war.

Right hand

The second in command

Duties include:

1. Takes command of Farborough when the leader is not available, assuming all of his/her duties.

2. Assumes the command of Lord/Lady when their leader passes on.

3. Helps their leader to make decisions as the main advisor.

Master Banker

In charge of the towns finances

Duties include:

1. Keeps track of the towns’ finances

2. Decides what would be best for Farborough to invest in. But consults with the town leader before acting.

The Master Thieves Guild

The master thieves guild are the main source of income for Farborough. But it is also one of the main attractions of the town.

The idea of the Thieves guild is to teach those aspiring the better and more efficient ways of earning money in a dishonest way.

It also is a way of uniting criminals, thieves and bandits together in a way like there never has been before.

The guild collects profits as a whole, and then shares it out evenly ((every week)), but 10% of the profits go to the city fund. The ranks of Apprentice Thief and above are allowed to perform their own jobs without being assigned to do so by the guild Masters and keep all the profits themselves however.

Normal Ranks:

Master Thief

Master Thief is the highest rank in the guild. The Master Thieves must be knowledgeable in all the arts of thievery, stealth and deception. Their job is to teach the lower ranks the necessary skills needed to become a Master Thief themselves.

They are also in charge of organising all the ranks with the times, places and descriptions of the thieving jobs assigned.

All other ranks answer to the Master Thieves.

Thief

From here on out, you can start doing jobs on your own. Thieves can be assigned work only for themselves or in a group. However, the duty of a thief is they will be assigned to work with an apprentice thief until the apprentice is promoted. That apprentice is their responsibility until that time. Thieves must teach their apprentices how to fine-tune the skills they studied as a Brigand and put them into practical use.

To be promoted to Master thief, you must be known as a good teacher and have an excellent understanding of the different skills and they must be just as excellent when put to practical use.

To be promoted to Courtesan, you must first apply for the special rank before a Master Thief. Then you must devote your studies and attentions toward their ways. If, after a while, you have become very experienced with them, you will be promoted.

To be promoted to Assassin, you must first apply for the special rank before a Master Thief. Then you must devote your studies and attentions toward their ways. After a while you will be tested with an assassination task. If you succeed, you might be promoted, depending on how thorough the work was. If you fail, you will continue your studies until you are given a chance to try again.

To be promoted to Con Artist, you must first apply for the special rank before a Master Thief. Then you must devote your studies and attentions toward their ways. You will be tested by the number of successful cons pulled verses the failures. If the numbers are good, you will be promoted.

Apprentice Thief

Apprentice Thieves are now allowed to start going on certain jobs. Apprentices will be under the guidance of a qualified thief who will teach them how to use the skills they studied in practical use. Apprentices must follow the directions of their superior, while working on their skills to be promoted.

To rank up to Thief, one will be tested by pulling a solo job. If they succeed, they will be promoted. If not, then they must do another term, length decided by their superior, of study until they will be tested again.

Brigand

The duties of the brigand contain less fieldwork and more study. They must dedicate their time to perfecting the necessary skills required of an apprentice thief. They will get the occasional job to help out with, but most likely just for any back up support

To rank up to Apprentice Thief a Brigand must have a thorough grip on the following skills:

1. Swordsmanship or archery (You may choose one or both)

2. Stealth

3. Deception

Brigands will be tested on these before being promoted

Scout

The Scouts are the lowest rank in the guild. Their main duty is to probe around for information. This ranges from people disobeying the laws of the town to the times and places wealthier people will be travelling either on their own or in small groups. The scouts are the eyes and ears of the guild.

To rank up to Brigand one must provide accurate information and demonstrate that they are capable of stealth and acquiring information efficiently.

Special Ranks:

Courtesan

The courtesans are a special rank that you can apply for once you reach the title of Thief. Courtesans are an exclusively female rank. Instead of using the point of a blade to get their riches, they choose to seduce men, making them fall in love and trust them, then in the end sneaking away, usually with a large bag full of their positions and gifts the men bought for them. ((This is ALL Courtesans are allowed to do. You know what I mean everyone *glares everybody down. Keep it G rated please))

Assassin

Assassin is a special rank that you can apply for once you reach the title of Thief. An Assassin is a hired killer. They will be instructed to kill certain people by the Master thieves, but can also do jobs for separate and independent parties not in our government.

Con Artist

Con Artist is a special rank that you can apply for once you reach the title of Thief. Con artists prey on the naïve by trying to fool them into buying into a scam they have created, relying on the person to show compassion for them. Confidence tricks can range to asking for small donations to fooling a large group of people asking for the ‘new taxes’ to be paid et cetera, et cetera.

It sounds like a cool idea but I do believe it's already been done. However, Aegis is made by the players so feel free to create these areas.

I'm half certain Pirates aren't allowed, though that was a long time since I heard that, just in case that is what your implying.

I think a Tortuga-like area would have to have PvP, but with some sort of rule system to filter people being annoying.

Thank you for the feedback! After thinking about this a lot more i've gotten really into the idea. I've decided that I would like to actually create this town! So I am currently working on the backstory, government, and rules but I still need a few questions answered(I will update this post with all the lore once I have finished it).

1. Who do I talk to about setting up the town, the area where to put it etc?

2. Can I put in a villian application for a character I'm not playing as yet?(I already decided that I won't be taking my current charater over to the new map. My new charater was going to be villian anyway(if my application gets accepted :P) and will be the one to build and run this town. I cannot do this with my current char as he is good as gold, so I'm hoping to be able to do this when we all move. And no don't worry, I'm not going to use that application to do bad deeds with my current char, I'm nowhwere near that stupid.).

3. How much land can I use to build it? I'd like to start thinking about the general places to put things.

I'm half certain Pirates aren't allowed, though that was a long time since I heard that, just in case that is what your implying.

I think a Tortuga-like area would have to have PvP, but with some sort of rule system to filter people being annoying.

No, I wasn't talking about pirates, just generally, criminals, theives, scumbags and the rest of the society who don't take much notice of the law.

And yes, I will have to think very hard with rules for the town so that the regulations are strict, but still loose (for a town like this some of the things which are normally not permitted like stealing and pvp, they would be allowed in definate moderation).

I think what I decided with pvp was, that if your in say a bar fight or dissagreement or basically anything where you have a legitimate reason for the fight then pvp is welcomed. It's just things like walking straight up to someone and whacking them with a sword for no good reason that won't be allowed.

I like the idea. It sounds like a one of a kind place, with its own rp style. But, what would happen if things were to get "out of hand." I still like the idea though. good job

Thank you! Like I said I need to think about the rules carefully first. And as my char will be running the town then any complaints can go straight to me and I'll deal with them appropriately.

Sorry for the wall of text...
