On Willpower and Thought.

A scientific paper discussing how an Arcane mage manifests spells from the Void and what fulcrum is actually used to manifest them into the material planes.

Spoiler

Willpower: One’s ability to push through that which they find aversive such as bearing grievance or overcoming physical aversions to complete a task.

Thought: One’s capacity to produce ideas and imagination.

Descendent: One of the four original species that populated the mortal planes after the events of Ancient History; Elves, Dwarves, Humans and Orcs.

It was in my last paper, The Powers That Be (Saneral, 266SA) that I dissected the mechanisms utilised to produce and conjure Arcane Magic. Having referenced theories surrounding the Innate Mana Pool and the Voidal-Overlap Theory I had seemingly only brushed the surface of Willpower and Thought, something fundamentally required in spellcasting.

It is in my understanding that almost every descendent is capable of producing Arcane Magic, it is also in my belief that those of Aenguldaemonic prowess must call upon the Void for use, as in no scripture or literature have any of them been ‘Omnipotent’ - they are not the Creator, therefore akin to us, they must draw power from somewhere. It is so far unknown to me why some of the races of sentient character are incapable of Arcane Magic upon the material plane. My only theory perhaps lies in mental faculties - that is not to say I believe them unintelligent, or inferior, but rather produced or created in a way that made them inherently incompatible with Voidal Magic as deep as the layers as required thought - they are not capable of thinking in the required way to produce magic.

Thought then, is the means and agency in which Arcane Magic is produced. It is known many creatures are capable of producing and utilising their mana as if exerting a limb or muscle: something any could do if exercised properly. I speculate that those capable of producing Arcane Magic are able to exert this limb in ways other beings are not: they are capable of using this muscle to create a stabilised punch through to the Void - produce a mana anchor. One playful theory is that mana is capable of being laced with thought: that what goes on within one’s mind can manifest in a physical yet abstract sense - my closest explanation on where this theory came from is the ideas surrounding auras, one sees aura in the mana they use- so perhaps a part of thought and personality is fed into mana and it is the thought particularly that can control how a spell manifests. It is then in this theory that when a mana anchor is sustained, the mana expelled from an individual laces itself with the thoughts and ideas that the individual possesses, and draws out the raw chaos of the Void, stamping this Arcane energy with these thoughts, and as a result altering it to manifest as the Arcane mage desires.

Now of course, this theory has many holes: the questions of translocation, transfiguration and most especially illusion all come into mind. These are all theorems I will have to write on later. But nevertheless the main theorem is that the Mana Anchor is not just a bridge between our mortal plane and the Void, but also a funnel which imbues these drawn energies with ideas on how to be and especially what to be: be it a blazing fireball or a vortex of water, or the precise creation of ice or rock, we lace the raw untamed chaos of the Void with mere thought, and it is capable of manifesting itself into that such existence, even if temporarily.

Overall then the answers of how thought plays its role in Arcane Magic is still something locked behind centuries more of hubris surely. Questions on how the Translocation and Transfiguration Arts operate are always sprouting and Illusion magic remains the most enigmatic, and perhaps more frightening of Arcane Arts to theorise on how it operates.

An inquisitive gnome rested within the library of Cerulia, laying the freshly released paper upon the table before him, promptly placing his reading glasses to read on with a grand, enthusiastic glare, taking time to read each word, and to understand each sentence. Tael’s mind pulsed as the printed knowledge continues to enlighten him, fueling his desires.
