Physiology

Spoiler

Kelpies take on the form of a beautiful black stallion, who sometimes can have some variation in appearance, some have seaweed entangled in their manes, while others have flowers.

Habitat

Spoiler

This enticingly deathly stallion can be found by those adventurous enough to explore and look for deep bodies of water. Most commonly, the kelpies inhabit rivers and streams - awaiting a new morsel to charm and drown.

Behaviour

Spoiler

Will hunt any who are near, or in the vicinity, of its habitat.

Only engages in combat if forced to. First will do everything in its power to charm and drown the victim if it is female.

Will attempt to retreat if faced with too powerful an opponent(s).

Kelpies will be hostile toward any who are near, or in, their habitat, attempting to charm and drown them before resorting to their adept ability to control the waters around them - in desperation to escape.

Abilities

Spoiler

Aquatic

They can control water from their habitat by sending large waves and violent torrents toward those harbouring hostility or threatening their safety.

Holds an enticing charm towards people, causing those afflicted to feel a sense of comfort - incapable of noticing those around them; else than the Kelpie. The victim would not feel any reason to struggle or distrust the Kelpie. This charm pulls them in, forcing people onto the horse’s back - drowning a short time after due to the Kelpie submerging the victim under the waters of their habitat.

Redlines

Spoiler

-Cannot take on the form of other creatures.

-Only women can be affected by this charm.

-Cannot be tamed.

-Women won’t be able to draw themselves out of the trance that the Kelpie puts them in, on their own.

Physiology

Kelpies are predaceous equines, and while some variations in their appearance have been recorded, they are most often depicted as sporting a beautiful and alluring black coat of fur. Their manes are typically decorated with seaweed, flowers, and other flora that can be found in their natural habitats.

Habitat

Should they be courageous or foolish enough to search for this enticing and deadly species of equine, adventurers are encouraged to explore the watery depths of rivers, swamps, and other wetlands. It is well understood that Kelpies require sufficient bodies of water to engage in their only recorded method of killing prey: drowning.

Behaviour

Kelpies are not reserved in their appetite; while hunting, anyone found within their territory is regarded as prey.  They are also known to stalk the immediate area surrounding their watery nests.

Kelpies not engaged in hunting behaviors prove to be rather cautious creatures. They avoid direct confrontation, and they will avoid a physical engagement unless cornered. Unfortunately, it is impossible to differentiate between a Kelpie that is hunting and a Kelpie that is resting.

These deceptive creatures utilize one of two hunting methods: active and stationary.

A Kelpie that is engaged in active hunting behaviors will calmly and slowly walk the expanse of their hunting grounds until prey has been located.

A Kelpie that is engaged in stationary hunting behaviors will conversely stand idle in a specific location until prey approaches it.

In the presence of prey,  regardless of the chosen hunting method, the Kelpie will attempt to supernaturally charm the unfortunate being into a trance-like state. While entranced, victims will perceive the Kelpie as the pinnacle of equine perfection. They are compelled to claim the faux-horse as their own, and they are supernaturally willed to approach the predator.

Intervention at this stage of predation is direly encouraged. Should the unwilling victim come into physical contact with the Kelpie, be it through petting, mounting, or grooming, their fate is sealed.

A Kelpie's hide, while appearing benign, either secretes an amberdill-like substance, or it is enchanted through some unknown means. Regardless, those who come into physical contact with the Kelpie become physically bound to it, and they are unable to pull away from the animal.

Once the victim has been secured to its hide, the Kelpie will gallop in the direction of the nearest body of the water. There, the predator will dive below the water's surface, drown its prey, then devour it.

When threatened, a Kelpie will immediately flee from confrontation until it has reached a body of water. If it has been pursued, the creature will attempt to entrance the threat before attempting to drown its aggressor. If the charm fails, or if the threat is deemed too challenging, or if numerous adversaries are present, the Kelpie will utilize its power to manipulate water and attempt to attack and kill the offending target(s).

Abilities

Neptune's Wrath

Kelpies possess the ability to manipulate and weaponize nearby sources of water. Through the use of this ability, they can cast violent waves or torrential jets of water in an attempt to harm, incapacitate, and ultimately kill their target(s).

Poseidon's Charm

Kelpies are capable of placing one or more victims into a trance-like state. While entranced, a victim will perceive the Kelpie's physical characteristics as being flawless, alluring, and undeniable. The victim is then flooded with intense feelings of comfort and safety, and they lose the ability to notice anything other than the Kelpie that charmed them. At this point, the victim becomes overwhelmed with a desire to pet, groom, ride, or take possession of the animal. Finally, the charm compells the victim to approach the Kelpie and come into physical contact with it.

Triton's Grip

A Kelpie's coat acts as a snare, trapping those who come into physical contact with it. Targets who become ensnared are physically unable to pull away from the creature. The strength of this adhesion is remarkable, but it has limitations. A lucid, uncharmed individual with sufficient strength can pry the victim away from the Kelpie, but only if the point of contact is small. This will harm the victim, as flesh will undoubtedly be torn away. Though, some would argue a degloved hand is preferable to becoming a meal. Likewise, severing the point of contact by, for example, removing the victim's hand, will also provide a means of escape. Finally, if all else fails, the Kelpie can be slain. Within an hour after its death, the Kelpie's coat will lose its supernatural grip. The hide around the point of contact can also be removed with a cutting tool, at which point anything glued to the victim will fall off within the same amount of time.

Redlines

-A Kelpie cannot take the appearance of another creature.

-Descendants and Beastfolk of any gender and age can be affected by Poseidon's Charm

-Descendants and Beastfolk are not capable of freeing themselves from Poseidon's Charm.

-A Kelpie cannot place additional people under Poseidon's Charm if that Kelpie is already actively charming one or more people.

-Neptune's Wrath requires the Kelpie to be at least twenty blocks away from a source of water.

-Neptune's Wrath does not manifest water; it can only manipulate what is already present.

-Rainfall is not a sufficient source of water for Neptune's Wrath.

-Descendants and Beastfolk are not capable of freeing themselves from Triton's Grip.

-If a victim is forcibly pulled away from Triton's Grip, the flesh at the point of contact will be torn away.

-If the point of contact for Triton's Grip is larger than the size of a hand, the damage done to the victim during removal will result in massive blood loss, shock, and death if not immediately addressed.

-Triton's Grip bypasses light clothing and medium armor. Heavy armor covering the point of contact can be removed, if possible, and will free the victim without harming them.

-Triton's Grip wears off within an hour of the Kelpie's death, or within an hour after the Kelpie has been cut away from the victim.

-For the sake of this lore piece, "within an hour" can be interpreted narratively or literally. Such is player choice.

-After the aforementioned time period, Kelpie Hide becomes functionally identical to mundane equine hide. Any noticeable difference is solely aesthetic, visual, and mundane.

Reason:

Spoiler

Needless gender specific redlines are needless and go against irl mythology.

Ong this piece deserved more love so I just rewrote the whole thing.

You can't freaking comprehend the power my ADHD medication bestows upon me.

Also Kelpies should be classified under swamps, marshes, and bogs. It's not really accurate to call them marine creatures.

Kelpies are meant to be a counterpart to solar stallions who entrance males, taking out that they can only entrance females because you dont like it doesn’t seem like a great reason when solar stallions are also sexist. Its lotc lore it shouldn’t follow irl mythology. But other than that this was a good revamp to the lacking lore and is better

"The fact kelpie cannot be tamed under any circumstances and solar stallions can leaves me unwilling to change the latter myself. The dichotomy falls flat when one creature is a strict antagonist and the other isn't, for me personally at least. No hate intentioned, fire ponies stay winning.

If Kelpie could be tamed in the same way solar stallions could, I think the dichotomy and gender distinctions would be cool. But I don't think Kelpie should be tamed due to the mythology surrounding their predatory nature. I think that's the cool thing ab them" - me, last month

I think whether or not they can be tamed shouldn’t matter, the fact i can have a horse that hates men and guys cant have a horse that hates women feels like a w to me. Making kelpies tame-able seems like a better fix then changing their lore which is supposed to go hand in hand with other lore. Tbh kelpies aren’t really seen anyways and it feels like nitpicking. If solar stallions didn’t exist then I’d agree.
