[Creature Lore] - [Geyser Newt]

Origin/Background/Culture

The Geyser newt lives, of course, in the geyser lands near but not directly in the thermal pools. They are one of the few amphibians that dare brave the heat as there is less competition for space and resources in the area. From what little research has been done on the amphibian since the descendants' arrival to Azuras, they appear to have lived in this environment thousands of years to be adapted to such an environment. It’s likely the tolerance of the heat came with time. While heat tolerant the newt requires a body of water to survive - moisture at the bare minimum. Like most amphibians the newt keeps a coating of mucus lining on its body to keep its small form from drying out.

Creature Summary

Adult geyser newts can grow from 2 inches to 6.5 inches long, from snout to tail tip. They have an odd life cycle with TWO stages rather than three like typical newts, making them more similar to salamanders. The first life stage is hatching from small jelly like eggs in a small puddle of water that is around the outer edges of geysers. When they hatch, the newtlets start off like tad poles, gaining limbs as they eat and grow. When a year passes they lose their gills and are able to go onto land, going into their second life stand of being semi-terrestrial. This ability allows their species to find new puddles, sources of food, and mates. Their colors range from strawberry red to lemon yellow with their dot patterns ranging from black to blue in coloration. They are insectivores, living off of insects they find in the puddles and grasses around the geysers.

Taming

It is wiser to just take a young newtlet from the puddle and help it grow into a mature geyser newt than to take an egg mass as the eggs are extremely fragile and temperature sensitive. The newtlets are hardier and easier to care for by keeping in a container of water and feeding insects. It takes a year to raise a newtlet to a terrestrial newt and even when they reach adulthood water must be provided to keep the amphibian happy and healthy.

ST Notes/Abilities

Like the rest of its family tree of newts and salamanders, the slime of the geyser salamander is toxic but not lethal to descendants in small interactions ; the slime a defense mechanism to get predators to spit the newt out as the slime is foul tasting and also causes an irritable stinging burn where the slime makes contact. If it gets in the eyes or mouth of a descendant it is more problematic, likely to cause irritation or an allergic reaction.

Redlines

One cannot use their slime to poison their fellow man as their toxin is not potent enough to kill descendants. They aren't meant to get really big either as they are a reflection of a real animal into the game.

Purpose

The purpose of this creature is to add a bit of life to the geysers of Azuras and offer a fun pet alternative to those who appreciate amphibians and their chill nature. Plus I thought having a smaller animal added would be a great addition when so many animals listed are giant.

This lore has been denied.

This is a newt. Newts exist.
