If it's hosted on a computer, you should try to possibly get it on an actual server, and rent it out. It's much much harder to DDoS attack an actual server host, and it's probably way cheaper than the anti-DDoS protection, I believe roughly $30-$100 a month depending on the quality. I'll start off: Ads, while people don't really like them, I'm sure they don't like the server being down even more, so perhaps everyone could enable ads for LOTC? A formal donation bar. I think that a kickstarter might actually help, it will make people more aware and boost morale. Letting us know that the server is in need of financial aid is fine, as we're willing to help. Maybe a monthly donation bar on the front page? Super Special Donator perks- Add more, give people more incentive to donate if they haven't already, for example- the ability to customize the color of your nametag (To anything but blue), the ability to customize your OOC tag, as long as it's appropriate. While I feel we shouldn't need this much of a push to donate, it might help get those scrooges to help out a little. NO: Pay to play/win- I've seen this suggested, and it's a bad idea. Firstly, Lotc isn't even about winning, it's about having enjoyable RP and meeting new people. Also, don't you think that the Yogs server would get DDoS'd frequently? Well I'm sure there are attempts, but it never happens, and I highly doubt they get that much donation money to buy anti-DDoS protection. And for a DDoS to even occur, they have to know your internal IP, so perhaps try hiding the internal IP via proxy and/or making it so you only see it when you connected? Lock 'eed Ironheart 120 Share Posted September 18, 2012 If you are unable to resolve the problem on your own I would recommend immediately going to sign up with a DDOS migitating service for roughly the price range you quoted per month. (200-400ish), they can have everything set up in a few hours or less and that would tide the server over until a more permanent solution was sorted out or you guys made the decision that you can afford the monthly fee necessary from donations, advertising, etc. That would at least help to get everything moving again as the downtime can severely impact new server signups, player retention, etc. The longer it goes on the worse, I'm confident with the community size that is currently here you guys would be able to sort out a method to cover the costs if necessary. If there is currently no money available then I'm sure the community can rally together the few hundred dollars needed to start the DDOS protection monthly payment. Further down the line a monthly goal that was publicly displayed showing the amount of progress required to cover the monthly costs could go a long way to motivating people to contribute to the server that they love and enjoy for free to keep it running. Regardless good luck and I'm confident you guys will be able to find a solution, keep soldiering on. ;) Other servers have meters that show funds needed for upkeep and such. You need to allow the community in on this Vaq. Not only would people donate to keep the server up they'd know where we stand on funds. As of right now no one really thinks twice the costs to keep such a server running and now we need ddos protection. If I personally knew the situation on funds I'd be more willing to spot the server needed monies to buy said protection. However I came from a server where the owner would pull stunts like this to get money from his players. Not saying your doing that but I stopped sending money blindly when these sort of threads sprang up. More clairvoyance as to whats going on, less last minute threads saying help. This has been going on for the past couple of weeks and were now just hearing how bad it is? I'd like to help but I have no clue as to how bad this really is. Also everyone thats posting meme's, my uncle's army and lets contact anonymous. Stop posting please, your not helping the situation any by burying good posts like Vrahn.
