The Loss Of Innocence

He said they would be safe. He lied.

He said he would always be there for them. He left.

He said nothing would happen. It did.

Eluana stood before the grave of her daughter, just a few months shy of seven years of age. Tears streaming down her face as she fell to her knees. The flowers she had placed paled to the beauty of the little girl she had given up so much for. She held her arms, shaking in fear and pain as she remembered the last Elven day she had spent with her daughter.

Kiriana was a bright and kind young girl. Her fascination with farming stemmed from her mother's constant work. That fateful day will always remain embeded in Eluana's mind as she sits there before the grave. She had not told Jercio, nor Azel. She had dug the grave herself. She had torn her hands, broken her heart and soiled her clothes working tirelessly for hours to dig the grave. The illness was thought to go away but even healers like Sathoro and Laila could not save the child.

It started with Kiriana eating a potato that was not ripe. Laila had managed to save Kiriana from the nightshade poisoning, though Eluana now believes it would have been better to let her go that way. Weakened by the poisoning, Kiriana had contracted something from a bite she had gotten when she tugged too hard on a wolf. They said it was a mild infection that was easily treatable. No one knew how dangerous it really was. Eluana was too stunned when she watched this playful and curious young girl went from healthy to seriously ill.

It had happened so fast. Jercio went out to hunt, Eluana stayed home with the ailing little girl. She told her stories, told her about her father. Kiriana always smiled, despite the pain she felt from her illness. In her last few moments of life, she told her mother how much she loved her, how much she missed her daddy, and how much she cared for Uncle Azel and Jercio, whom she thought of as another father.

Eluana watched her daughter fall asleep, kissing her fevered forehead one last time before falling asleep next to her daughter. She awoke only an hour later to find her daughter no longer moved. She had cried and screamed for her daughter to move, but move she did not. Eluana could no longer see as she pulled her daughter close and began rocking her daughter, the body slowly cooling in her arms.

After a while, Eluana got up and carried her daughter out into the hills, picking out the perfect place for her to forever rest. She spent her entire day digging the ground with her hands, making the hole deep enough for her Daughter to rest. Unable to leave her daughter's side, even as she lay buried several feet underground, Eluana sat there, staring at the grave she had made.

"Kiriana..." she whimpered as she stared at the makeshift headstone. Flowers littering the ground around her. A pumpkin had been buried with her, Kiriana's favorite object. Tears streamed down her dirt covered face as she sat there. She slowly began writing letters and sending them off to her friends, people she had come to know over the years. She sent one to Dante, father of Kiriana, who had been missing for two years now. One went to Scarlet and Scale, another went to Vuugush and Elphaba, one went to Titania, another to Elrond, one to Aislinn and one to Aenor.

Her hands now bleeding, she sent off her bird, sending the letters off one by one, to tell them of the tragedy she had created in her carelessness. "Kiriana...L...Luna is sorry." she whimpered as she held her shaking frame. "M-Mama did-didn't know..." She looked at the grave again, begging for her daughter's forgiveness. She did not know potatoes were poisonous if eaten too early, nor that the plant itself was deadly. She closed her eyes, bowing her head as she bade farewell to her beloved daughter.

Each letter was addressed to their specified person. The news heartbreaking to those who knew Eluana Sweetgrass and Kiriana Drake.

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry. I have failed in the worst way. Kiriana, my beloved Kiriana, has passed away. She was a beautiful child, a child I have risked so much to be with, to have. Her body is buried in my new home, Darkhaven, watching over her family. She was too young to go. I am so sorry. Please remember her for the beauty she brought to the world.

Eluana Sweetgrass

Skale charges through the gates, letter in hand. It took him nearly all day, but he made it. His black coat hangs heavily around him and his white paints are soaked with sweat. He races through the small village, looking for Luna, unable to let her face this alone any longer. When he finally found her, he himself cried. His red eyes dripped tears as he slowly approached, unable to believe the child he called a niece had passed and he was not around. Once arriving beside her, he falls to his knees, grasping Eluana and rocking her back and forth in his arms. His tears fall onto her head. Unable to speak, he just whimpers, denying the truth of it all, His red hair, now long and unkempt, blocks his face from view but that tears soak through.

"Luna.... I- I'm so s-sorry..." He stutters out, pain evident in his already weakened voice. He removes his coat and wraps it around Eluana, to keep her warm. "I... I... I will make this right... The monks... I can contact a monk. I won't let her die, no Eluana... Never..." He holds her close, unable to let go.

Azel Bloodseeker watches his brother run by, confused by his sudden appearance. Once he notices what has happened, he approaches, standing at the edge of the grave in deathly silence. He reaches into his pack and pull an amulet, an amulet that belonged to Dante Drake, his brother and best friend, and he drops it onto the grave. He bows his head, sending a prayer to the gods for her safety, and a promise to whatever dark god that took her, that he will find and destroy him or her. Tears roll down the Dark Elf's face.

Scarlet bloodseeker receives a bird about the death of her sister, she falls to her bed in shock

"No...kiri!" tears form and fall from her face onto the letter "First...skale leaves...then father...now...now this!"

She cries, remembering all the times she had wanted to connect with kiri, play with her, due to family drama that happened rarely. "Little on...be at peace, we all loved you, im sorry i was never there for you" regret forms in her mind, eyes and heart as she begins to hate herself for not being the sister she should have been. she turns to her son and holds him tight as he enters the room and walks over to her, no words are spoken, they need not be, crying fills the silence as they try to comfort each other "its time we go see grandma" scarlet eyes wipeing her eyes

Eluana stayed quiet when Skale scooped her up. She barely even registered anyone but the grave. Dante had left her, alone, for two years to work on the farms, to try and support her daughter. He came back only once and he was so changed it scared her. She leaned against Skale, just needing the reassurance that she was still there, though she just wished it was just a bad dream. She had caused this. She had been the cause of her daughter's death. She should have stayed in Malinor, should have stayed at the farms, where Kiriana would have had more to do than help her in the farms. She would have grown up, with friends, other children her age. Now she would never age again. She would never see another birthday.

Skale holds her close, unable to stop the tears, his rocking a slow and steady pace. "Eluana... Stay with me okay? This won't change anything... Kiri will be back, nothing will change... We are all still here for you. Your friends, your family, we all are." His voice shakes as he speaks, and he cannot help but hug her in a closer, tighter hug. "Skale is here... I brought carrots too."

Azel stares up at the sky, rain beginning to fall against his face. "I will make this right... I will make Darkhaven stronger... I will defend those close to me... No more will I lose those I care about." He turns back to the grave and allows the rain to wash away his tears.

Eluana stares at the grave. Her eyes unfocused as she replays the scene of her daughter slowly succumbing to the illness. The rain hiding any tears she had left. Her silver hair turning dark as its slowly becomes soaked. She had never fully told her daughter how she came to be. She remembered telling her it was because of carrots. Slowly Eluana curled closer to her knees, trying to block out everything as she slips further into her sorrow and depression. Her body shaking as she silently mourns for the child she had lost.

------

Laila stands farther from the scene, unable to look at the group. She had failed in saving the child. Kiriana had been exposed too long to nightshade and was too young. She walks into the rain and back into the clinic, finding anything she can that was breakable and destroying it. How could she not have detected the infection. She should have used Malin's heart. Should have listened to Sathoro the many months before. She growls in rage as she puts her hand through a door, ignoring the pain as she mourns the loss of her cousin's daughter.

Skale stands, taking Eluana with him. "Come my dear Luna... We will go warm you up in the tavern." He smiles and plants a friendly kiss on her forehead. "We must get you out of the rain, somewhere of peace and quiet." He looks to Azel, and the two nod to one another simultaneously before picking their way down the small mountain together.

Eluana says nothing as she is held. Her eyes staring into nothingness as she is picked up. Her eyes widening in fear as she started to be carried away, but she was too weak anymore to protest. She just watched as the grave became further and further before vanishing behind a house. She whimpers and finally looks down at her raw hands. The blood that stained them was not enough to atone for what she had done.

Aislinn receives the letter, his face quickly turning pale and drawn out. He frowns, biting his tongue as he goes to write a response.

Words cannot express the grief and sorrow I have for your loss. I wish there was something more I can do, but as of now I can merely offer you my words. It may seem hard, but I can only hope that you will recover from your loss. Never forget that you have many friends that will stand by you and help you through the tough times ahead.

My deepest apologies. ~Aislinn

Aenor receives the letter and reads it over, his heart becoming heavy and sorrowful. He sighs, going to write back to Luna

Luna,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to you. I wish there was something I could do, I wish that I could give you your daughter back...But I'm afraid all I can do is offer you my condolences, and friendship. Know that I am here for you, as everyone else is as well. I will make a trip to Darkhaven as soon as I can. Until then Luna, stay safe. Keep a strong heart.

Sincerely,

Aenor Calithil

Sees the seen, and feels bad for the poor woman, he knew what it was like to lose a child, there's always a gap left behind.

He sighs, and says quietly. "Good luck." And then walks off, leaving the area, heading back for home.
